Observably incorrect. It wasn't the greatest, but it was fucking miles above shows that do have horrendous animation, like Webdiver

Sophisticated and artful.

>Not bogged down by pretensions

It isn't about nostalgia, it's about realizing that being "intelligent" isn't the only thing that makes an anime good. If that were the case then maybe 1% of anime would be good.

geist is unironically my favorite OVA/movie and part of it is it's incredible setting, plot, and character writing. I don't understand how people watch this and think it's just stupid violence. is as though they didn't read any of the text or pay any attention to what's happening. maybe the english dub butchers it?

>planet devastated by embargoes and interplanetary nuclear warfare as a result of rebelling against earth's domination
>factions competing for power despite the condition of their planet, to the level of creating sophisticated mutual destruction technology as a defense mechanism
>mutually assured destruction device meant to protect certain interests under the threat of human extermination for all sides automatically triggered by a political assassination, faction that designed it desperately trying to shut it down before it goes off
>weighing between utilizing a form of dangerous genetically enhanced super-soldier with a reputation for allowing heavy collateral and being unpredictable in trying to shut down the device, or attempting it with a small handful of wounded, tired, and low-morale men who have been fighting non-stop
>"unintelligent and poorly written"
I wonder what intelligent and well-written stuff looks like and where it's hiding. the sequel is even more sophisticated.
>>
>>15594487

That's just having a standard 80s sci-fi/mecha plot to work with though. Not that that is a bad thing.

Did Geist always mean to activate the Death Force, or did he just lose it after Krutes turned on him?
>>
>>15595552
of course he did. what better way is there to improve his battle condition than to fight among a doomsday device?

>shit character writing
The character writing was why I really liked MD Geist though. It's super rare to watch something that's entirely from the antagonist's perspective and even rarer to pull it off without him being some sort of anti-hero or sympathetic backstory in fear of not being relatable enough for the audience. MD Geist knows what it is and just relishes in Geist being a crazy asshole who needs more kill.
>>
>>15597961

THIS DUDE. BUY THIS DUDE A DRANK.
>>
>>15594487
Geist's dub is a masterpiece.
>>
>>15597961
Yeah, Geist is pretty much the only piece of fiction I can think of where the protagonist is also the antagonist without any evil alternate personality bullshit going on.
>>
>>15597961
I liked how when Geist activated the Deathforce it actually felt like a twist even though it shouldn't have been.
>>
>>15593239
>I've never watched the OVAs: the post

MD Geist is about some plain and simple cyberpunk gore, if you're not down with that, then stick to GiTS and shut up.
>>
>>15597961
this is really where I can't understand why people don't think geist is at least extremely interesting if not a masterpiece. geist himself is easily one of the most unique depictions of a character I have ever seen in fiction.
>>
>>15598401
Because none of the context surrounding it changes the fact that the plot is just "a crazy man kills everyone." It's not really thought-provoking in the slightest even if it is fun to watch. I don't know why you feel the need to make it out to be more than it is
>>
>>15598418
>genetically designed super-soldiers and the context surrounding their usage and storage
>interplanetary conflict with embargoes and political subversion
>the dynamics of mutual destruction devices in warfare
>the rise and fall of personality cults
>"not really though-provoking"
brainlet.
>>
>>15598418
The simplicity is what makes it so fascinating.
>>
>>15593216
It's a fun watch anon, but let's not kid ourselves here.
>>
>>15594487
> good plot
> I wonder what intelligent and well-written stuff looks like and where it's hiding. the sequel is even more sophisticated.

How about you pick up a book anon?
>>
>>15598436
They did'nt exactly have the run time actually flesh any of that out or make any interesting points about any of it. Geist is a good action OVA with a cool setting, why is that not enough?
>>
>>15599449
>why is that not enough?
how could you have possibly gotten the impression that I'm complaining about it?
>>
>>15599337
>visual media can't be well-written because books exist
I'm surrounded by microbes.
