The Epyon didn't have planet defensors, Zechs just controls the three Virgo (who do have them) with the Zero system, just like in Gundam X, the Flash System allows to control entire mobile suits just like funnels.

Sandrock was not designed as the leader of the other suits. All 5 were designed independently and meant to work alone. Quatre led them in like 2 battles towards the end. Heero broke off in those two battles and Wufei broke off in the last battle. Duo even broke off in the last battle in order to rescue the scientists. Quatre confronted Dorothy alone.

I'd find the amount of loose cabling more distracting visually than any of that. One fairly short cable for the sword is okay, but now it appears to have two long cables floating around, which is both visually busy and a liability. I think the planet defensors should have docked to the existing wings and the cable should have been gotten rid of entirely, with the sword connecting through a dock in the palm to the suit's reactor rather than an external cable.

Personally I'd put them on the heatrod shield and call it a day. It's a novel concept of using the shield as a shield after all. I'd rather leave the sword like the old one. It hanging by the epyons hip like a knight's sword is perfect. Also I just flat like the visual of the corded sword with Epyon. It's something unique to that suit even if it isn't the most efficient or logical thing ever.

The shield is too small. Planet defensors are pretty big. The Virgo's whole shoulders had to be designed around them and Mercurius had to have the whole back devoted to them. The whole point of Epyon getting an energy shield seems to be to stop Wing Zero from sniping it. Therefore it would need a whole lot of defensors for that meaning more space to take up. I don't like the cables on the generators here but it's a wiser decision than completely overhauling the design.
