***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

First off here's the poll from last thread in regards to the overall group builds.

https://goo gl/forms/bWQcCx47tIehStYr2

Secondly here's a poll for voting on your favorite entries from the melee group build.

https://goo gl/forms/X7ocXts7fGdrec7G3

Lastly, here's the poll to decide the next groupbuild. If you don't see your suggestion here, it's due to me only going with ideas that had more than one suggestion in both the thread and the poll submissions I've got already.

http://www.strawpoll.me/13115554

Voting will probably end either this thread or the next, depending on how many votes are gotten.

Will they fit on a MG 2.0 Zaku?

I kinda want to take the posable hands from my MG char's zaku and use them on a 1/144 kit with weird proportions, then replace the MGs hands with these.
>>
>>15587908
Anything full armor would probably fit. Who is that one designer that specializes in bulky stuff?
It'd basically require messing with plaplate and other stuff, which is good experience.

Xeku Eins would also be one, f2000, gusion, man rodi, the list goes on.

Whelp, first RG done. That was a lot of fun. For those of you that still bother with stickers, how do you go about applying them? I feel like I'm making it harder than it needs to be, all I'm doing is lining them up with tweezers. Mk II is up next, really want to do that one perfectly.
>>
>>15588230
For waterslides you wanna use tweezers or cotton swabs. I use cotton swabs to adjust the position of them and then to soak up the solution around the sticker so it dries nicely, and tweezers can cause tearing.

If you mean the normal stickers then just use whatever, there's no science to that.

Decals / stickers are going to tear, bend, and go on crooked. That's just what they do. You can never get them perfect so don't try to, you'll only mess them up more.
>>
>>15588230
I usually place them with the tip of a hobby knife and then rub them on with a dull/round tool. I use the back side of my file's handle

I need some help anons. I'd like to get in some metalic glossy painted pieces for my kit(s).

The idea is to use a glossy black enamel base
paint and then cover that with a chrome silver (and possibly some clear colors) or gold. For the chrome silver/gold layer I keep seeing that it's best to use lacquer paint, but I'm wondering if an acrylic one will work aswell.

Right now I'm not equiped for lacquer paints and I wasn't really planning on ever using them so I'd rather use an acrylic silver/gold than lacquer.

Will this work or will it look (a lot) worse than lacquer?

For good chrome you really do want lacquers, the vallejo metal color line is decent as far as acrylic metallics go though.
They also make a gloss black primer, I don't like it that much though as vallejo primers aren't sandable.

What do you mean by not being equipped for using lacquer paints? Remember that enamel paint is fairly health hazardous as well, and that there is no paint that is good for you. Also, I think using enamels straight onto plastic is bad for the plastic.

Out of 16 entries I only recall seeing wips of 3 or 4 of them. That number could have been higher because they look completely different before paint. Most seemed to be posted completed or nearly completed within the last few weeks. 5 I don't even recall seeing at all before the end.

>What do you mean by not being equipped for using lacquer paints?

I'm thinking of investing into a decent mask (my current mask is good enough for acrylics, but I don't feel it's good enough for something like spraying lacquer or enamel). I have a well ventilated room and I'm using a spraybooth for my painting aswell.

For now I'm applying the enamels by handbrush (the part's I'm working on are fairly small). I'm ofcourse priming the pieces aswell before applying the enamel.

I'll give the metal color ones from Vallejo a shot, thanks for the tip!

Nothing too fancy, but I'm thinking of using a MP Guncannon or GM Cannon II as a early Titans heavy MS or some sort of riot suppression. I'm leaning more towards the GM Cannon II since the Quel was in use at the time. I would make sense that the Titans would continue using old mp units until they would be gradually phased out before 0087

Its a shitty rerelease of the old alex. You can tell by the blocky hands, detail-less elbow joints, and giant seams on the thighs. The gun also has FG-tier color separation.

Bandai seems to be barely supporting this series at all. The other lead suit is mostly just a recolor and kitbash of the even older 2 zaku III kits and iirc was relegated to p-bandai release.

Nah

I still need to buy a new PC before I can get into 3D printing, old one died and don't have enough money to replace it because I keep throwing it all at gunpla and PlayStation games.
>>
>>15591009
Once it gets cheaper in ten or so years, sure, but right now I don't see that happening. An anon made 3D printed conversion parts to turn a Tallgeese into a Leo, but because of current Shapeway production costs the thing still costs over $50 before shipping.
>>
>>15587924
why don't her feet have any texture?
>>
>>15590040
>ywn be this retarded
>>
>>15591184
I picked up the set some time ago, and it has a lot of flaws.

With a better printer, the pieces could be printed without the shapeways sandpaper texture.

Structurally, there aren't any supporting walls inside the pieces,so it's just a thin .5mm or so brittle printed plastic, so you'll need to put putty behind to support it. The head and shoulders are especially weak, with the shoulders cracking after sanding and test fitting.

I also don't think the designer was a frequent customizer. The Leo knee armor designs he came up with involve removing the entire knee section, and plugging the armor into the tiny kneecap piece. It leaves a big gap when you bend it and looks really bad. He could have easily made it into replacing the knee armor that's hinged on the sides.

The gun only comes in the lowest quality material, so it's extremely gritty, and even after sanding down it looks cartoonish.

Overall it feels on par with a bad resin recast. You'd need some decent skill to make it work.
>>
>>15591229
Nuclear radiation.
>>
>>15591267
I also have the conversion kit.
It was pretty damn expensive, but I've always wanted a Leo, and it looks cool next to my wing kits.

I wish the chinks would make some resin casts of it, I wouldn't mind having another Leo.

As for the textures, buy some Mr. Surfacer primer. It will help out a bit.
>>
>Practice gloss paint on spoons
>First couple wet coats leave pretty bad orange peeling

Because it uses up more plastic, takes longer to mold per runner due to the extra steps per color, is a pain to design runners around, and raises the cost of the kit. I'd imagine it also raises the chances of QC fuck ups for colors going where they shouldn't.

The character busts don't use a lot of runners and the ones they do use are smaller. So all around the costs are kept down and it isn't as much of a hassle to design and produce.

>MG Enhanced ZZ vKa, MG FA ZZ vKa, and MG FAZZ 2.0 are all P-Bandai.

I could see any of those happening. The ZZ is definitely not popular enough for Enhanced ZZ to be a general release all on its own, and while the FA ZZ arguably is it's up in the air how they're going to handle it. The prototype was already shown with the original FA parts on, so they might pull a Hyaku Shiki 2.0 and release the old parts as a standalone thing. Or they could pull a Nu HWS and make new parts to release separately, since the ZZ's FA loadout is almost symmetrical (though at the same time much more extensive than the HWS, and they wouldn't be able to fit in the FAZZ's cannon (which is why FAZZ would be a separate P-Bandai release)).

Either way, I think the only thing absolutely certain is that there will be a new MG FAZZ, and it will be P-Bandai. We can only hope they won't lock the Hyper Mega Cannon runners to it, though they probably will because otherwise who would shell out cash for a literal recolor?

Can a literal talentless retard do a decent job painting gunpla, or should I stick to OoB? Like is there any skill to airbrushing at all (not talking about crazy paintjobs or anything).
>>
>>15594813
You don't just airbrush and magic happens. Any idiot can hook up a compressor and start spraying away.

Airbrushing involves a fuckton of prepwork. You have to sand, clean, seam weld, mix, thin, and have a lot of patience. It's fairly easy to do, but easy to mess up as well. Overall, I'd say the hardest part is the overwhelming amount of basic skills you'll pick up quickly.
>>
>>15594813
Sure. Just make sure you have the right tools, thinned your paint, and have primed the parts you want to paint. Practice with a cheap kit too.

>>
>>15594827
>>15594829
I can do basic skills, no problem. I lurk here a lot and notice a lot of painted gunpla posted here have noticeable problems (thick paint, sloppy coat etc). I feel like mine would be even worse. Considering investing in an airbrush, especially if its as simple as you say.
>>
>>15594844
That looks nice, I would definitely be happy with results like that. What brush / tools do you use?
>>
>>15594844
>having the right tools.
The right tools in the wrong hands can lead to bad results.

>>15594853
>I feel like mine would be even worse.
The main thing here is to be able to take criticism well. You'll get a lot of insults mixed in with legitimate criticism on how to improve.

>Considering investing in an airbrush, especially if its as simple as you say.
Learn how to properly clean your brush. I know a guy who only cleans with water and he has some fancy Iwata that's started rusting and he doesn't know why. You also have to learn skills that lead up to brushing like what I mentioned earlier. A good booth can be easily made or bought, a mask for protection, skewers and alligator clips are easy to find, and a cleaning pot is real helpful.

Oh yeah, get a bunch of reseable tupperware or plastic containers from dollar stores for easy organization. It's a stupid thing to mention, but a lot of people don't organize.
>>
>>15594860
I fucked up several painting steps due to lack of patience, or more accurately, lack of available time to work at a comfortable pace.

I just went down to Hobby Lobby and bought an Iwata Eclipse and bought some Vallejo Model Air online. My friend has the cheaper Iwata Neo and it works just as well, honestly.
>>
>>15594853
Could always buy a couple spray cans to try it out, just don't keep buying them instead of switching to an airbrush cans are pricey
>>
>>15594880
>The right tools in the wrong hands can lead to bad results.
Ultimately it's trial and error and using the tools properly. If you use the guide, videos, and ask in the thread if you get stuck, you should be fine.
>>
>>15594883
By lack of patience do you mean neglecting to do all the necessary preparations, or just not waiting for shit to dry?

>>15594895
I tried spray cans once on some cheap HG rick dom. The coat was fine but there was tons of tiny bubbles which pretty much ruined the whole thing. I dont know why there was bubbles but it didn't look like that when it went on. Looks ok from a distance I guess.

>>15594880
>You also have to learn skills that lead up to brushing like what I mentioned earlier.

If the worst part is having to do a lot of tedious shit then I can probably do that. Can't be worse than applying 150 tiny water slide decals on a ver ka kit. Also I'll probably fuck up sanding too much off.
>>
>>15594935
Lack of patience as in spraying haphazardly and wasting paint or having uneven layers. Spilling paint because I'm moving too fast and then having to take the time to mix up a new batch of paint in the correct ratio. Or not cleaning my airbrush enough and the nozzle getting clogged or the needle having buildup while spraying.

The prep is easy. You just cut and sand the pieces. Get some sticks to put them on so you don't spray your hands or ruin them while drying, they're really cheap online. Get a cardboard box to spray in. Preferably get a mask with a filter. Prime, paint, topcoat in 2+ layers each so it doesn't get runny or anything and you get an even coverage.
>>
>>15594813
I feel ya man. I stare at my kits and think about painting them but am too scared to try.
>>
>>15595001
Well I guess there's nothing to do but try. Only problem is all my kits have a bunch of decals and lining on them, tons of time wasted. Can you even buy kit specific decals? I know you can buy generic ones but I've used up all of the kit specific ones (i.e gold trimming on sinanju / white marks on sazabi etc)

How mad should I be about Amazon not shipping stuff correctly? The last 3 kits I got had dented up boxes due to bad packaging. nothing broken inside but for example one box was pushed in from the top enough to pop some pieces of the runners.

It just seems like I should not be paying full price for damaged goods.
>>
>>15595434
Depends on who sent it, no?
When I buy gunpla on Amazon at least 90% of what I order comes from Japan, is always packaged with protection of the product as the #1 priority and sometimes comes with extras like bookmarks or personal messages from the shop the kit came from. Every Bluefin kit I get that ships from somewhere in the states has disrespectful damage and parts that have popped off of sprues. If you can wait the 2-4 weeks for overseas shipping I recommend doing just that.
>>
>>15595470
Bluefin sends the shit to stores pretty well. The stores are very varied, but most are ok. Surprisingly, the 3 times I've gotten a bad shipping experience was with Amazon themselves.
>>
>>15595472
I've yet to get an order from TopJapan or Toy Shop Hobby One that has had me seething with rage because of broken anything, but as you pointed out, Amazon themselves usually screw it up somehow. Plus ordering from overseas I beat paying tax on kits which leaves more money for another kit or builders parts. If it says $14.65 and free shipping all you pay is that price and just have to wait a bit.
>>
>>15595434
Every time I've bought a kit with Prime shipping it's arrived pristine.
