Amuro was fighting to prevent the Earth being put in to a nuclear winter. Which he achieved. His sacrifice saved the planet and bought decades of peace. Just because it didn't reinvent the Federation, something he wasn't trying to achieve, doesn't make it worthless. The old guys in Victory were the same. They weren't trying to reinvent the Federation or change the world order, they were trying to stop a totalitarian regime from doing that. Which they helped do. And which makes their sacrifice worthwhile.

The Reinforce.Jr suicide run was pretty much the endgame for Zanscare when their Motorad fleet were wiped out giving way for the survivor to disengage and Uso to infiltrate inside Angel Halo and buy the Federation Fleet enough time to reach the battle zone.

There was literally no reason behind it, it was just to create "drama"

Victory isn't just about war sucking. It's about adults having some seriously fucked up outlooks on life and war. Why did Oliver suicide? He thought it was the best solution, but that's because he was batshit insane. Just like Junko and Katejina and several of the other shrike team members and Usso's dad and so forth. I don't even mean unintentionally I mean it's even pointed out for most of them at some point in the show that they're fucked up and cynical and what not, and it's contrasted against Usso who's innocent and doesn't believe the war comes down to a drag out, kill-all revenge game played for thrills, glory, and the catharsis of killing.
