They probably figured that after several years since S2 aired, it was time to bring new fans up to speed and get them into the franchise.

Still wish this season got blu-rays though.

I don't think ignoring Umihiko was a bad idea. He's easily the least interesting Wataru companion.

It still baffles me that it's the only fantasy mecha series I've watched so far that actually constantly improves over time and with each installment, with Chou ending up as one of my favorite mecha series in general.
