There's a difference. The violence in SKL looks cool as opposed to disgusting.

SKL isn't edgy. It's fully aware of how ridiculous and over the top it is and rolls with it with a big fucking smile on its face as shit explodes and heavy metal screams out of the soundtrack.

It has a manga but it's untranslated, except in French, which gives more context and expands on several ideas of the movie. But you don't need to read it to understand SKL, SKL was meant to stand on its own and it does so very well.

Definitely mostly the latter. Towards the end of the second OVA series, it basically is the closest anything has even gotten in terms of accurately portraying the warp in WH40k, to give you an idea. It is actually visceral, the first OVA even uses live action footage superimposed on the animation to give it that extra sense of unease.
