I'd be surprised if they were really a huge improvement over the DVDs besides the usual stuff like slightly less banding and slightly richer color. BDs of anime with SD sources just generally don't look that great.

I mean it can't be due to copyright, or we'd never get the episodes either. So I'm going to guess it's either because they're limited in numbers, or the people who own the BDs are dicks.
