For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Aww shit son, we're back in business.

Can't wait to see what people came up with for the groupbuild

I fucked up my build so many times that I want to quit this hobby.

But I'm a worthless fuck up anyways, so I don't know why I thought I could paint.

>tfw finals are next week so I can finally start building that mg gm sniper II after them

I don't know how you people can stand having a backlog, I've had this kit for only 2 weeks and I'm itching to build it. How do you people sit on multiple kits and not go crazy?

The MG Zeta 2.0 pretty much nails the TV look, but whether or not that is a good thing depends on you. It's also surprisingly old; it predates standardized AB pegs so you have to use its really awkward display base.

Overall Zeta kits that actually transform tend to sacrifice either their stability (RG) or their articulation (MG) for it. I think if they made a new MG Zeta they could probably make something legitimately good now, but if they're going to do that I'd prefer a new mkII first. The styling on the mkII 2.0 kills the kit for me.

Daban made an edgier version of the Zeta 2.0, but they went way too far. It honestly just looks goofy.

I've finally finished my first RG, the Amatsu Mina. It was actually not as bad to build as I had thought. I like that the skeleton was basically all ready to go, and that there wasn't a sheet of tiny polycap connectors.

And it's so much more posable than your HGs! I'm not sure I can go back to making 144 HGs anymore...
>>
>>15579660
Buy only one kit at a time. Savor it as much a possible.
It lasts me at least a month.
>>
>>15579698
I know third parties have to make their big releases distinct from the original Bandai mold now, but I wish they wouldn't try to take the BEECRAFT SEED redesign approach to everything. Not everything looks better slimmer and with more panel lines.

And sometimes it just feels like they added stuff just for the sake of it. Why does the DX need thrusters on its arms? Why are there reflectors on the TSC? And did the V-Fin really need to be supersized?

But this one at least still looks alright.
>>
>>15579713
It's literally in the post you quoted. Was it so ugly you forgot how to read?
>>
>>15579717
Looks like they removed the DX's signature whiskers too.
>>
>>15579719
Quite frankly yes. It was that ugly.
Didn't know Daban do 'originals'.
>>
>>15579722
Nah, they're still there, they just removed them for that shot for whatever reason.

Probably because they supersized the whiskers too and it just looks awkward. There's a reason the MG scaled them down!
>>
>>15579724
There was an interview a while back with one of DM's staff members. He said they (and other third parties) have an agreement with Bandai going where they won't get sued for reusing their engineering if they a) pay Bandai a fee and b) redesign the kit enough that it looks different.

This is also why the runner designs are different.
>>
>>15579726
Though to be fair to Daban, the classic design for the DX really does have fuck huge fins on the face.

Thing is, I think it's almost universally agreed that MG DX looks waaaaay better than classic DX.
>>
>>15579708
>>15579717
i agree, i do like their PG unicorn, though i cant into the SEEDCHEST where it juts out to a point.
>>
>>15579698
>The MG Zeta 2.0 pretty much nails the TV look
If you're blind.

The TV show zeta is squat and looks like a strong man with rounder features, though that might be because of the line quality with an 80s tv show.

Point is, the MG 2.0 looks NOTHING like the TV zeta. The closest is the PG but even then it's actually a far cry from the actual thing. The MG 2.0 is the furthest thing from the TV zeta.
>>
>>15579728
Neat.
Now if only third party originals aren't shit. I'm looking at you tiefsturmer.
>>
>>15579731
> though that might be because of the line quality with an 80s tv show.

>The MG 2.0 is the furthest thing from the TV zeta.

and thank goodness it does, squat 80s quality does not translate well into physical form for such a ms.

IMG_1631.jpg
1MB, 3264x2448px
>>15579731
Yeah, my mistake. I meant the A New Translation look, since that's why the mkII and Zeta 2.0 kits were even released to begin with.

I'd say that the closest thing to TV Zeta is the original HGUC. It's why I still like that doofy little thing.

>>15579729
Also just to reiterate, MG DX fucking saved that design. My only complaint is that they kinda screwed up the height (it should be shorter than the X, but it's about the same height now), but half the problem with the original DX was how overly stout it was so hell I'll take it.
>>
>>15579761
And I guess that brings me back to my original point because one of the things a lot of third party kits do is make the thing even taller and it's just why.

They're supposed to be 1/100! Bandai doesn't always get it right either, but they at least try to get close. DM and Daban just make the thing shoot right up in height and advertise the thing as 1/100 anyways.

Probably the most dramatic example is one of DM's first releases, which probably nobody remembers anymore. They made a plastic version of Vicious Project's conversion kit and it... um... yeah.

They've toned it down since then, but you see stuff like their MG Strike adding an extra bit to the hip joints just to make the thing look taller.

>>15579781
But the real winner for "okay this isn't even close to 1/100 anymore" has to be TM Gogo's Kampfer. Bandai on the left.

This one was also based on a resin kit. I think the original design was from G-System for 1/60, then someone "downscaled" it to 1/100, and then a plastic kit was made?

The moral of the story is that for resin kits, scale is more of a general guideline than anything else. Especially with VP kits, would not recommend them if you're OCD about scale.

There aren't enough scare quotes in the world to describe VP's """1/100""" kits.

Kind of. I find that since the pieces are all meant to fit together on top of the skeleton you won't accidentally put in something with with the wrong orintation like with an HG.

At the same time it's a pretty different design so it can throw you off if you haven't played with RGS before.

I've never had such a love/hate reaction to a kit. The colors and posability of this Zgok are far beyond what I expected, but NONE OF THE PLASTIC wanted to fuse. I wound up hitting everything with tamiya cement twice and nothing seemed to fuse.

As a new builder, a 2 month time frame is helpful to allow time to learn new techniques, experiment, and allow for shitty weather and other unforeseen issues keeping me from building. A longer period also allows for more entrants.

A week between would be nice to discuss the next theme.

And while prizes would be a good incentive to get people building, none of us can ask for that.

I still say a G Gundam inspired theme. Make a mobile suit based on your country, state, city, and etc. If your city is boring, use your state, if your state is boring, use your country.
You can even make it to make fun of your location if you're the self deprecating sort.

Is there a difference if I use a flat clear coat instead of a glossy clear coat when I want to use pic related to do my panel lines?
>>
>>15580302
>seam lines
>thick paint
>chipping off already and showing bare plastic
>>
>>15579790
TM Gogo's Kampfer isnt too terrible though. I got one a while back myself. Quality of the plastic is good, and though the design is odd for a Kampfer, its still fairly solid
>>
>>15580808
You mean as a protective coat BEFORE panel washing?

Yes, there is a huuuuge difference. On a smooth gloss coat the wash will flow across it and can be wiped off with a bit of thinner fairly easily even after it dries. On a flat coat the powdery flat base stuff in it will suck up the wash like a sponge and be stained by it, preventing you from getting clean lines or being able to wipe off excess.
>>
>>15580312
>tfw I was gonna do an Elite Knight armor Gyan that could've made this look mediocre in comparison but I'm fucking lazy
The difference is that he did, and he kicked your ass. Don't get a big head if you're not gonna do anything.

>>15580040
Some parts really need a good painting, but the kit is about the same quality one would expect from RE 100. It's pretty good. I'm assuming you're talking about the Efreet Custom and not the P Bandai Efreet Schneid. If you're eyeing the Schneid, that nigga NEEDS painting. All the heat darts are molded in purple.
>>

>>
>>15580755
I got one. It holds up pretty well. Sub arms are not as articulated as I'd like, and if you aren't a fan of stickers, then prepare to do a lot of painting to get those yellow lines on stuff. The knee armor loves to pop off, and the feet don't really have a secure way to stay on, so you may want to glue/modify a few things here and there.

However, it holds it pose pretty well since the plastic all fits pretty snug. You can't store the sub machine guns in the 'pontoons' stock, but you could probably mod them to allow for it. Definitely a kit that needs a stand, but I like it overall.

Also, how do we feel about Daban bootlegs? My friend got me a kit as a gift, and when it arrived, it was revealed to be a bootleg. I'll still happily build it, I was just curious if anyone had any experience with them.
>>
>>15581069
Keyword is SMOOTH glosscoat. Did you handbrush it on or did it have orangepeel? I used to have issues with washes on pledge too and when I switched to airbrushing I found enamel washes flowed much better across things like vallejo gloss, alclad aqua gloss, and mr.color gloss.

Anyone have this kit? I'm really intrigued.
>>
>>15581251
It seems nice but I hate it. They should've called it LunaSHIKI instead. Because none of it's parts use the "Gazer" parts aside from the forearm shields. Most BF homage-kits are mostly named based on their base gundam. This one just copies the motif/style of the StarGazer. But uses the entirety of a Mega Shiki instead...

I'm just fucking buttmad because they had a chance to give the old 144 StarGazer a revive kit but instead chose to recycle a fucking shiki that we already have a lot of. I will never call that fucking thing a "gazer".
>>
>>15581251
I think the head's out of place.

Similar to what >>15581265 said the kit woulda looked a lot better with a traditional Shiki type head, still a nice kit tho
>>
>>15581251
Mine should be arriving in the mail on Monday or so, but I haven't got one right now
>>
>>15581280
It does include the regular Shiki head so you can use that
>>
>>15581288
Well fuck me then. Still shoulda used a different naming scheme
>>
>>15581265
Agreed.
Other than the glowing lines, for me, the charm of the Stargazer is that it's curves give it an otherworldly appearance which, combined with the glowing lines, white color scheme and the ring, gives it an angelic appearance without cluttering it. The fact that it's pretty barebones also makes the ring seem more imposing.
The Lunagazer has nothing of that.
>>

the chopstick file. I don't know what it's called officially but it comes with that 5 pack of different shaped metal files and it's shaped like one.

Alpha Abrasives/Flex-i-File's sanding needles are not very good. The maximum grit stops at 320, and they all have very sharp edges running along at the sides that seem to be the result of mold lines.

The former is used for extremely high grit sanding. The latter is used to make metallic paints shine.

You top coat before panel washes. Also don't use gloss and flat paints for different parts unless you have a really good idea for why you're doing it. Obviously painting is something you get better at with practice. If you fuck up just make sure to learn something from it.
>>
Does anyone have a guide to working with resin Gundam kits? All the ones I found were several years old and incomplete.
>>
>>15581857
Not the other guy, but I've always wondered something. Is there any benefit to using flat paint? I'm not talking about topcoat, I'm talking about the ones straight out the bottle. I can't see the point when flat topcoat exists unless flat paint + flat topcoat = super flat finish. Seems to me like buying gloss colors and gloss and flat topcoats are all you really need.

I think pic related has ruined the sazabi ver ka for me, it's all I can think of when I look at it.

Nice work though, did you use metal detail pieces or just paint them with metallics? And if you used metal pieces, which ones did you get and from where?
>>
>>15582735
The torso piping, rocket nozzles, and elbow joint covers are metal. I picked them up on eBay for ~$25 in a kit. It also came with a cheap LED module, but I didn't end up using it.
>>
>>15582748

I see. I assume you had to drill/glue? Did it come with any instructions?
>>
>>15582760
Yep. The instructions show you where each piece goes and what hole to drill. Some of the engine bell assemblies didn't quite fit together or interfered with the mechanics of the kit, so I had to fudge it in a few places.
>>
>>15582226
Depends on what grade you are working on. For hg and sd it should be ok. For mgs get 200 just to be safe. I paint fully disassembled and 100 is definitely not enough for mastergrades.

What's a good black primer for models that doubles as a paint? I want to paint an inner frame black, and I feel like using a primer would be enough for the job because I'd be flat coating it and painting some small details anyways.
>>
>>15582226

I have 75 at the moment and it's enough for a high grade. I'm about to start painting my first MG and I will probably have to use sticky tack for half of it, or build and paint half the kit at a time.

When I painted my GM sniper, I painted in groups of colors. So 50 clips was enough for me, personally. It just depends on if you want to do it all at once or split it up.

Even then I don't think 50 will be enough for this project, considering the huge backpack. Plus I kinda want to do it all parallel with each other, as I have to wait for things to cure between the gloss and flat coat, and I don't want to take things off the clips.

I might just split it into two "kits", suit and huge backpack.
>>
>>15582990
Yeah. 50 isn't much to work with, I was just saying if you don't feel like you absolutely have to paint it all at once, it'll work alright. For your project, I think having 1-200 would probably be beneficial
>>
>>15583006

probably something like that, yeah. I will be able to cut some corners by painting the frame fairly assembled as I intend to keep the kit transformed, but it will still be lots of parts.

Though I think a lot of the white pieces are too small for alligator clips anyway, so sticky tack might be the way to go anyway.
>>
>>15583008
Yeah, as long as you don't incorporate any joints, you should be able to paint the frame parts partially assembled.

For the little pieces, you can use some rolled up tape or sticky tack on a skewer, probably.

Tape sounds good, though I wonder if it will stay still when airbrushing or flap around.

I'm not sure how to do for the thrusters with holes, I was thinking of taking skewers with some tape around them and sticking them through the holes, as the inside of those holes shouldn't be visible anyway. Unless there is a better solution?

Guys I have a quick question. Say I want to get a silver metalic finnish on a part, do I need to lay down a gloss black below that to highten the gloss?

Are there any good acrylic gloss blacks? (Would vallejo work?)
>>
Gustav Karl
>>
>>15582702
>Vallejo Air acrylics. They're already pre-thinned for airbrushes.

20 PSI and 0.5 needle, right?

How well do they stand up to the scratch test?
>>
>>15583112
>20 psi

No, properly thinned acrylics shouldn't need more than like 10-15 psi. And you may still need to thin pre-thinned paints like model air a bit as the exact level they've been thinned can vary from bottle to bottle.

>>
Has anyone used the mr color lacquer clear coats over vallejo paint or the vallejo gloss varnish?

I find the mr color clear flat looks quite a bit flatter than I can get the vallejo to look, so I prefer it.
I wonder if there are any issues with the combination and how long I should wait until I apply the mr color over the vallejo products.

Sadly neither are as flat as the original color (vallejo model air nato black).

I live in a very dry climate, and just started painting my first kit. The paint appears to be drying instantly leaving me with a "rough" surface on the model.

What can I do about this? I have tried doing some thinning, which seems to help, but now I'm stuck trying to paint over a rough surface.

Can that actually be done? Or do I need to figure out how to remove the paint and start over from the primer?
>>

There are a handful of other MSs with round heads besides the Man Rodi...
>>
>>15583526
I thin the gloss varnish at a 1:2 (varnish:water) ratio and the flat at a 2:3 ratio.

I apply two coats and that seems to work enough for me. Give it (and the paint) time to cure so that it becomes hard enough to withstand a bit of abuse.

alrighty, I've had this issue with every kit I've ever done that requires white and/or grey

what in the hell causes coats, when painting with an airbrush, to look fuzzy and have a caked on look? I thin every single time with good paint/thinner ratio, mix thoroughly, and follow the guide to a T.

Why is it that this only ever happens when I use whites and/or greys? Also, is there a simple way to fix this, or am I fucked and have to start over? I'm ok with stripping if I can, but I'm using lacquers, so I don't know if that's even an option.
