Basic premise: The Protagonist wants to go to mech school however due to "health reasons" he is determined unfit to pilot the schools and latter on the military's mechs and such his application is denied. But instead of giving up or waiting around for a super special awesome mech to be handed to him on a silver platter, he gets to work. If he can't get in the normal, he'll just build a way in by designing a mech that he will be able to pilot yet be capable enough to go toe to toe with the schools models.

Could be a variety of reasons but the main one I'm thinking of is his parents (diseased) who he idolized where in the military and he somewhat feels like he's completely letting them down if he can't even make an attempt to follow in their footsteps. Plus who wouldn't want to be able pilot in giant robots

The mechs in this universe require a huge amount of physical effort to be able to use due to the amount of power needed, so it could come down to MC is just a weak kid who can't build the much muscle or could be some issue with a weak internal organ such as the heart or lungs (tempted to say because of asthma since there are still cases where the military will deny you from serving). Which brings up the main issue our protagonist is trying to solve: How to build a mech able to match or even exceed the power output of the current models yet be less taxing on the pilots body.

This is primarily what the first arc would be, designing, testing, and eventually scrapping numerous prototypes in till one works. Which probably would wind up going down the route of designing smaller units since in theory the less mass the less amount of total energy and power required with the added bonus of generally better mobility.

Powerful Mobile Suits were created to fight them, but the numbers quickly dwindled to the dozens. Now, the rich society is seeking entertainment and proposes a Hunger Games style event, where society's unwanted will be given an MS and dropped to Earth. Whoever kills the most MAs (or MSs) wins. The sponsor for the pilot that is. He will be left stranded on the planet and eventually, he will be overrun by the MAs.

The MC would be one of these folk. Maybe he truly was scum, maybe he was set up by someone who dislikes him a lot. Either way, his only hope to get off the planet will be to team up with other pilots.

Forty seven years ago humanity, with the aid of warp travel, managed to finally colonize the Alpha Centauri system, marking the end of the Sol Century and the beginning of the Centaurian Century.

It is the Centaurian Century M.0047. Twenty years after the colonization of Alpha Centauri, the Sol Federation was replaced by the Autarchy of Sol, humanity lived in a time of uneasy balance. The Autarchy started out as a sanation movement in order to cure the rot that rolled in the corrupt Federation, yet the former turned soon into something worse than the latter. With the Autarchy growing more tyrannical, the Centauri Colonies feared that they'd lose their freedom if they were to fight against someone with superior numbers. Yet there was hope.

Inspired by the stories of the now non-existent Gundams, the Mobile Suits that ended the wars and paved the road to the Centaurian Century, the brightest engineers decided to resurrect them in more powerful forms in order to make up for the lack of suit pilots. Utilizing advanced Mobile-Doll controls, as well as Mobile Armor and cruiser designs, the Gundams were reborn.

Ensign Andrew Tamao is a promising cadet and was selected due to his impressive skills as squad leader and tactician to participate in project Titan. When he meets up with four other cadets on the military space port of Svensgaard, the place is attacked by a Autarchian Spec-Ops force. With a small garrison being insufficient to fend off the force, Tamao and the cadets decide to board the Mobile Suits they were supposed to run, yet to their shock, the vehicles they were supposed to pilot were the size of ships. With no option left to them, the cadets have to pilot the specially designed Mobile Armors called Gundams and at the same time control their squadrons of specialized Mobile Dolls to protect the Centaurian Colonies from the Autarchy of Sol.

Mankind has undergone a series of pivotal moments in the past century and the future belongs to those who understood these events and those who will make use of the predictions of the previous generations. Fifty years ago, the evil Jama Empire was sealed away by a robot known as Jeeg. Following that, the arrival of a peaceful alien civilization known as the Riofaldians happened ten years ago. With their advanced technology that they shared freely with humanity, all threats to peace were wiped out and mankind enjoyed unprecedented prosperity.

To commemorate the arrival of the Riofaldians, there was to be a celebration at the orbital elevator connecting the Earth to space. The popular band Fire Bomber had even been invited to play. However, on the day of the celebrations, the Riofaldians disabled all equipment that used their technology and moved to turn Earth into a subservient colony. In the chaos, several groups seized the opportunity to enact their own ambitions upon Earth, including Dr. Hell and his deadly mechanical beasts, four separate races of alien invaders, one called the Zorbados empire, one known as the Wulgaru, the third being the mysterious Zeravire, and the fourth being the moon-based Machine Empire, as well as the international criminal cult known as the Black Lodge.

To secure their escape, Celestial Being would leave behind the results of its Cyber Beast Force project, three separately developed combining units all bearing the codename “Dancouga.” These three units quickly found support from the Photon Power Labs, the Saotome Institute the Gran Knights and their enigmatic leader Sandman, the MJP’s ASHMB prototype-using Team Doberman, the Experts of Justice’s Daisaku Kusama and his three remotely operated robots stolen from the Black Lodge, and Professor Kano, the eccentric leader of the Exaxxion project. In the year 220 NE, mankind has spread throughout the solar system on terraformed planets and moons, and space colonies constructed within huge asteroids. Until a corporation called Rashkova backed by an extremist group called Gaiabound that believes humanity was never meant to live among the stars debuts the first mobile suit, a massive humanoid war machine. Several years later Gaiabound stages a secret internal coup of the United Earth government and authorizes a massive military campaign against the space colonies, justified as putting down a nonexistent colony-wide rebellion, using its new mobile suits to strong-arm them into abandoning space and returning to live on Earth. Those that refuse are slaughtered, lacking the means to defend themselves.

One boy by the name of Kuzey Ferris living in a colony on the outer edge of the asteroid belt is the victim of one such attack, his parents and little sister brutally crushed beneath the foot of a mobile suit. He and three of his friends: Sarah, Junpei, and Amir are among the few dozen survivors of the colony, rescued by a ship called the UEV Firma Major, after its captain Jonah Wallace refused to fire on the fleeing refugees and took them aboard instead. Kuzey sneaks to the bridge and overhears the captain arguing with the new prime minister of the Earthen government, and learns the true nature of the attack, and is implanted with the seeds of intense hatred of Earth and its people. He shares the truth with his friends, and they make a vow to find some way to get revenge on the Earth, before they are separated and taken to various foster homes.

Fifteen years later Kuzey has become one of the most notorious criminals on Earth, now the only home of humanity in the solar system. He is an assassin that exclusively targets members of the Gaiabound cult and seeks to wipe them out entirely. But as the years have gone by the more widespread use of mobile suits has made it harder for him to kill his targets.

After he botches an attempt on the life of the prime minister that he saw back when his home was destroyed, he narrowly avoids escape after being rescued by a mysterious, beautiful woman named Melissa, who represents an underground resistance movement called Newtype, who seek to remove Gaiabound from power and return mankind from the stars. They recruit Kuzey's aid in stealing one of a brand new type of elite mobile suit called a Gundam, hoping he will aid in their cause. Kuzey joins them and acquires the G-013b Artemis, then joins Newtype in their war against the government, seeing them as a useful tool to achieve his goals.

But as the conflict slowly expands and Kuzey comes into contact with his old friends: Sarah, serving as the XO aboard the UEV Firma Major beneath the man who saved their lives; Junpei, a corporate magnate and philanthropist working to foster public resentment against the government; and Amir, now an ace mobile suit pilot for Gaiabound and pilot of his Gundam's twin, the G-013a Apollo, his own blind hatred is thrown in his face and he has to question if his violent methods are truly a path to peace or just an outlet for his own pain. And as he commits greater atrocities, even dragging a young girl with strange mental abilities into the constantly growing war, he slowly becomes aware of Newtype's true aims to force humanity into space by destroying the Earth, and sees the ruthless things they will do to make it happen. He comes to question whether extremism is the appropriate response to extremism.

In the year 199X, a race of monsters known only as “Drifters” appeared from tears in reality itself, obliterating nearly all in its path. While humanity fought back against the beasts, their initial efforts were fruitless. To fend off this threat, scientists from all over the world started working together to develop piloted machines to combat this threat-- Known as both “Super Robots” and “Real Robots.” These scientists even collaborated with beings on other planets to create robots that could combat these threats.
The battle of these robots, as well as others that existed before, managed to drive the Drifters away for the time being in the Battle of the Dark Continent-- A fight on a continent completely void of life on the surface. The people of the Dark Continent live in underground villages ruled by the Spiral King, an immortal warrior from the Spiral War from one thousand years prior for unknown reasons. Despite this, the Spiral King himself was uninvolved in the war with the dimensional invaders. However, with the Drifters still being a very real threat, as well as the fact that there were still those who did harm with these robots (As well as monsters and mecha that existed long before this time, such as those found from the ruins of the Mycenaean civilization) production of mecha increased, and is still at an all time high at this day.
Because of the effects of this grueling war, as well as the sudden appearance of a massive spaceship crash-landing in South Ataria Island seven years after the Battle of the Dark Continent, entire countries had been either nearly or completely destroyed. As a result, much of humanity chose to take to the stars to avoid the Drifters. Three sets of colonies have been built-- The Jupiter colony groups, the Mars colony groups, and the Earth Federation colony groups known as “Sides.”

The Jupiter colonies are seen as, relatively speaking, for those too poor to live anywhere else. Those born there have been given the derogatory name of “Enders,” as opposed to “Spacenoids” like those on Earth. The Mars colonies have mostly remained uninvolved in Earth’s wars, they are vastly seen as inferior and there are many people fighting for Martian Independence Rights, both politicians and extremists like the terrorist group BAHRAM. However, the martians have discovered life on numerous planets and remain close to their allies on Planet Zil and Planet Cronos.
Meanwhile, the Sides have mostly remained under the jurisdiction of the Earth Federation, although one of the Sides-- Side 3-- declared independence as the Principality of Zeon. As a result, in January of 200X, they dropped a colony on Earth, killing millions of people, and declared war on the Earth Federation with their Zaku mobile suits. It wasn’t until September of this war when the Earth Federation finally finished their Gundam mobile suits, meant for combat rather than sport, as used by the prototypes of the past 11 years. The Earth Federation won many key victories, in no small part thanks to Amuro Ray, a teenage boy from Side 7 who piloted the RX-78-2 Gundam.
Nearly exactly one year after the war began, Amuro Ray and the Earth Federation defeated the Principality of Zeon, thus the war has been dubbed the “One-Year War.” Ray was discovered to be a Newtype, the next stage in human evolution, late into the war, and facilities on Earth and in the space colonies began noticing and researching many strange powers held by humans. Because of this, the drop of the Space Colony, the spaceship in South Ataria three years prior, and the near destruction of the world in a near-cataclysmic event known as the “Summer of Love,” even more people from Earth took to the stars.

In order to prevent another One-Year War, the Gundam Fight-- a tournament now held every four years using motion-controlled Mobile Suits that had just finished its 11th annual going-- was adopted by the colonies as a means to decide a clear champion of the Earth Federation’s space colonies. However, its three-time champion Gentle Chapman and his use of beam weaponry caused distrust between colonies developing their own beam weapons, and due to the unfortunate timing of his third victory and the One-Year War happening at the same time, the Gundam Fight was delayed to once every four years.
It is 20XX. 17 years has passed since the Battle of the Dark Continent, 10 years after spaceship crash in South Ataria Island, and 7 years since the end of the One-Year War. Now, in Japan’s Southern Cross Island, our story begins...
