The haremshit in Try certainly ruined Fumina's character, but it's hardly the sole contributing factor to Try shitting the bed.

Most Newtypes. Two reasons.

Tension Killer/Plot Armor. Other than a few times when execution is done right, I never feel any danger comes to them and struggles/battles end up feeling hollow.

Space Autism. I understand the thought process behind unlikable characters but there's also the point I don't have enough content to be interested or invested in them. Ultimately stops me from caring about them and the story most of the time, even at the point when they die.

Also, may be harem antics can ruin something, but to do so the harem part has to be relevant enough to ruin the rest. I mean, having a couple of love interests but barely interacting with them and a third one that almost never appears its hardly "harem antics".

If they had expended the episodes rubbing their tits on his face...ok, but it barely was there.

I get why people gets mad at harems if it doesn't leave room for anything else, but I don't get why they get mad when its only a bit of it.

Is there really even a rule, though? Most mecha anime stop at love triangle if they even have romance plots, very few progress to full blown harem. I can only name a handful that do, nearly all of which I haven't watched

There was no harem formula to this show. The original plan was to have S2 as the typical Urobutchi character killing. If you could not tell Amy was the primary love interest after the belly dancing then you are probably too stupid to watch Tomino shows too.
