It's not. Nothing interesting ever happens in that show. The only thing going on for it was the school teacher gimmick, which is abandoned pretty quickly. By his appearance in Mebius, you can just assume nothing happened after the first few episodes. Also, Yullian was a worse tokusatsu heroine than Tackle from Kamen Rider Stronger, and I thought that would be impossible, but they managed to pull that off. She transforms once, gets defeated and leaves the planet the very next episode. Completely pointless.

What I mean by that is that the ultra franchise is declining rapidly. Mebius had the heart, lenght and the budget of a true ultra show. It celebrated every that made the series awesome. After that we got two seasons of pokemon: ultra monsters. And then came the movie, that introduced terrible cgi into the mix. All the shows now look terrible and fake. Too many gimmics and reused monsters.

Basically the decline can be summed up with these points:

> the constant reuse of monsters. I mean, remember how special it was, when a Showa era kaiju would make a second appearance, some 100 episodes after his debut? It was like an event. 13 long season of ultraman managed to come up with new designs every week, while throwing in an occasional return of a famous foe. Now it's mostly reused monsters.

If you are not enjoying yourself you can watch something else. The franchise needs to adapt to the new era or become a relic of history. Rider did it, Sentai did it, now Ultraman has chosen to adapt as well. I remember when Tiga came out and people bitched about it being gimmicky too. This is the next step, for better or worse.

Tsuburaya is still a company that needs to make a profit. If you are too autistic to support the new direction, that's a shame, but don't expect them to change back to the old days because some fans are crying not muh, especially not when the growth is as visible as right now


New shows being ass doesn't retroactively make the old show bad either. Original Showa series and Heisei trio are still good, Cosmos is still fun, Nexus is still cool, so on and so forth. If you want to remember about the good old shows, go ahead, hell I still watch Leo more often than not. But if you are not even giving the new shows a chance, the fault is on you.

Ginga aside, Tsuburaya hasn't really had a misfire this decade with the quality of their Ultraman shows. X was a fun little show but Orb showed that serialization worked to the benefit by creating a greater investment and return benefit for viewers when the story's compelling. Viewing figures for the show were up something stupid like 115% from X, it's obviously working when done well.

So, this seems as good a place to ask as any: is that one manga by the Linebarrel duo any decent? Does anybody have some good scans of the first volume so I can see if it's worth buying? The scans I have right now seem to have a pretty shaky translation.

Fixed that for you. I mean, at least the Sentai, Metal Hero and even Kamen Rider fanbases can at least somewhat tolerate having heroines, any time Ultra has anything close to a female Ultra hero, they barely get a chance to shine at all. Even if it's just a secondary host for an Ultra.

It's a pretty good manga. The one stipulation the writers were given going in is that they were not allowed to use giant monsters, so at times it comes off more like a Kamen Rider series, but it's still very cool. There are a ton of interesting variations on the old suit designs. (personal favorite is Ace's redesign) Because the chapters are published monthly, it can move a little fast at times but it's still a good read.

I like it. As said, definitely has a more Kamen Rider vibe to it.

Especially since so far there are 4 characters who have called themselves Ultraman, each with their own armors/suits and gimmicks... The main protagonist, a more brutal ally/rival, one who isn't from their organization, and "Ultra-Dad".

"Ultra-Dad" (pictured) is kind of my favorite of the 4 right now.

Orb is great but it's very different from the usual Ultra show formula, so it's not really fair to say one is better than the other.

If you want a better representation of the franchise as a whole, anything Mebius and before is pretty solid.

Yeah. I just finished watching Cosmos with the existing HKSubs, which really weren't all that bad (some wonky and inconsistent name translations for jets, equipment, monsters, and side/one-off characters as well as occasionally awkward sentences but otherwise not all that bad. In all honesty, no more than half a step worse than the Crunchyroll subs), but something a bit less rough around the edges would be nice.

And those extra 5 episodes would be great too, though they never conflicted with the overall story (aside from I think one monster showing up out of the blue and everyone recognizing it, I think).

Could be some good years for Ultraman fans in the near future. Here's to hoping SOMEONE does something with Dyna.

It is sad. The producers talked about making Orb's story into an epic saga, but things didn't pan out so Tsuburaya just moved on to the next Ultra. Now all we can hope for is minute cameos, and that those unused ideas are spun off into a manga or something.
And as for the cast, we'll probably never see them all together again, let alone see Gai in a cameo beyond next year. It's like watching an entire mini-franchise get snuffed out.

Those part aren't even listed in the book which came out a week ago, so there is nothing on the plate at all.

Even if it didn't, Orb's toy sales and viewership were much greater than Ginga and X's.
Given its popularity, you'd think they would milk the series more.

but to be fair, there's very little potential in terms of toys for Orb.
They can't keep re-releasing the Orb Ring by adding new sounds, and low function toys like the Orb Calibur and Slasher just don't sell as well.
