***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD (FINAL WEEK)**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Been doing the HG GM Sniper II, nearly done, but there's this waist piece? And it just slides in and out, there's no connection or lock, if I attach the top it's gonna fall off the legs the second I put it any way other than standing straight up. Am I missing something or is it really made like this?

There's nowhere for the top to connect to the legs other than that?

Noob here. I just finished a HG G-Arcane 1/144. All my previous builds were 1/100 HG kits which I butchered because I didn't use nippers or perform any sanding.

The only problem I had with the G-arcane was that sanding was straining on my eyes if I spent too long working the kit in one sitting. The sanding was also quite basic cause i don't really intend to do any spray painting, and even if I do I don't really expect perfect removal of the nub marks.

Anyway, I have the following kits, and could use some advice on which one I should tackle next to get more experience:

MG strike freedom 1.0
MG Freedom
MG gundam double X

HG fenice rinascita
HG unicorn full armour destroy mode

RG-whole bunch of them

I am thinking of the MG strike freedom 1.0, cause I am planning on getting the MG 2.0 in the near future.

MLP: My Little Pony, Western girl's horse show made to sell toys.
Precure: Pretty Cure, Japanese girl's magical girl show made to sell toys.
SoL: Slice of Life, a type of genre where it's characters living their daily lives and not much happens. Examples: K-On, Yuyushiki, Hyouka.
CGDCT: Cute Girls Doing Cute Things. A descriptor of a show where it is exactly what it says. Usually coupled with SoL shows.

They break immersion and highlight that the model is a plastic toy instead of a scaled model replica of a giant metal robot. It looks really bad when the kit is otherwise painted and looks good.

The general idea is a white-gray body with a much more noticeably colored nose cone. Some kind of warning color that says "Hey, this part explodes! Treat with care!" I think some shade of red or orange would do the trick.

Is there a reference chart or something on what to use to clean up different types of panel lines on top of different types of paint?
>>
>>15565321

I see. I assume you were referring to me as I posted the red helmwige backpack in the last thread. It's my second preshaded kit so the advice is helpful.

Is it easier to cover the dark brown than the black is?

I needed to do quite a few coats in order to make it look decent, so it would be nice to have to use less paint. Though I guess it's kind of convenient that it's hard to accidentally cover up completely.
>>
>>15565289
Can one fix seam lines without having to paint afterwards?
>>
>>15565311
>>15565316
Masking. It even has a panel line dividing the body and the nose to make it easier for you.
>>
>>15565352
If you don't need to use putty, do a nice job at sanding and topcoat, it could work.
>>
Honest question from someone just getting into kitbashing and scratchbuilding since I didn't see it in the guide:

How do you guys create mounting points for parts that do not have existing ones? Take for instance attaching something via peg or ball joint to an arm/backpack where there is no mounting point or where the existing one is of a different type (square shield hole vs round shield hole).

I have a lot of spare and option parts and a few kits I have ideas for but I lack the experience of attaching non-standard parts without just using cement.
>>
>>15565224
Guide: Learn to mess around and know that you'll HAVE to scratch build at times. Use third party joints as needed. Not much more to kitbashing than "figure out what works and get it to look pretty by the time it's over".
>>
>>15565352
Liquid cement melts the pieces together, after which you sand to improve the blending effect.
Topcoat to make the seam even less noticeable.
>>
>>15565368
Make a hold with a pin vice and the appropriately sized drill bit. Widen it by sanding to the correct shape.
>>
>>15565368
Bump.
>>15565384
That's what I figured, but I wasn't sure if there was anywhere to find some proper techniques for certain situations. Thanks
>>
Speaking of kitbashing, what is good to use for grappling hooks or other kinds of string/tether? Trying to google search with keywords for ideas only comes up with how to do LEDS (wire) or pre-existing kits. I want insulated copper with I guess, but pretty thin?
>>
>>15565362

I haven't really done any masking before (my first thought was to hand paint the missilies instead) so could I get some advice on how to approach it in this example?

As discussed we would want three colors, dark grey or metallic for the massive slab of metal, white or bright gray for the missiles and red for the tips of the missiles.

Which order for the layers/masking would make the most sense? And should I use masking tape or a masking liquid?
>>
>>15565276
I'd wager that pic is worth more than most peoples entire backlog.... and car.
Bootleg or not, badass models are badass.
>>
>>15565391
Definitely something I've considered, just not sure what diameter pin vice would be most appropriate?

Anyone have suggestions? I'm speaking in HG scale.
>>
>>15565454

Metallic paintjob to tell your enemies that when it hits, it hits hard.

Red-Orange to show your enemies you mean business. Red OBVIOUSLY makes the missiles go faster, and combination caution-orange to give fair warning on anyone to think twice before they cross you.

You know... thanks for replying to my post, but I already knew that since that's basically what MGs are. And that's not what I was fucking asking.

Sorry if I sound rude, it's just that it kinda pisses me off when people like you reply to a post with a question, with some kind of answer that doesn't even answer the actual question at all.

I was asking why a MG of all things removed a gimmick that an outdated old HG had.

Would've been neat to have a scene where some faction is ambushed while in the middle of repairs, and a naked frame has to fight the invading MS. Frantically dodging flying rounds and melee weapons while it worked hard to destroy the enemy. knowing that without the paint armor each received hit was more likely to do catastrophic damage.

>>15566528
You can't be rude to someone when you don't even understand something you're trying to dismiss. The complete version of my opinion would simply be that because the MG version prioritize aesthetics over gimmick/playability, it had to make due with a better looking cloak/joint setup instead of one that would allow for a folding-out gimmick. I mean, it's pretty obvious that it had to be this way when the cloak shape-morphed every time it was deployed or retracted in the show.

Instead of saying all that, I simply replied with a rhetorical question that should not only have been a sufficient answer to your question, but also left room for discussion in case you have any worthwhile opinion of your own or rebuttal. Instead you completely missed the point and got "impatient" with my "non-answer".

Ironic that you should post that image in reference to my post when it is much more applicable to yours. Let's move on, however. Given that you have a serious answer, do you have any thoughts?

>MG version prioritize aesthetics over gimmick/playability
Not that guy but I'm sure the whole point of MGs was to be able to show off the gimmicks AND give great aesthetics simultaneously. Like how some HGs like the Zeta can't transform properly without partsforming to compensate for the smaller scale, so the MG makes up for it with better engineering thanks to it's bigger size while still looking good at the same time.
>>
>>15567609
Generally, but each waves has different priorities. The G Gundam series of MGs generally cared much more about stability (full body frame with screws) and aesthetics (Shining Gundam's tweaked head design). Focus on engineering and mechanical gimmicks comes and goes.

they can engineer the Zeta & Delta to have poseable, fully transforming frames and have waist swivel but they couldn't engineer a pair of wings the size of the entire MS's to still be able to flap open and cover the entire body like the MG Deathscythe Hell or be like the wings of the proto zero that still spread and pop open?... What?

I mean, I get that most of those are more modern than the old MG Master so the engineering has evolved, but if the original HG 1/100 could do it just fine, why can't a same scale MG be engineered to do the same? It couldn't have been that complicated to do right?
>>
>>15567679
It has more to do with shape shifting parts, like I said. The shape of the wing binders parts are not the same as the cloak parts. Watch the show, look at the lineart or examining the new 1/144 HGFC and you would see what I mean. If they wanted to be accurate to both the cloak and wing binder linearts, they would have had to include extra parts and made it a partsformer. This would have been possible, but I guess they didn't deem it important enough.

Tamiya White Primer. It is almost impossible to screw up a coat of white primer. Tamiya also makes light grey primer, rust red and even pink. If you are wanting more colours, seek out the game shops for Army Painter sprays. (pic related). They are very expensive, but are a great source of bright colour in a fine matte spray.

Well guys, this is my groupbuild. It isn't complete, but I'm done.

Between my fuckups on every step of the build and painstakingly time consuming fixes, stiff joints and a bulky frame that make it impossible to pose without moving two other things unintentionally, the sword being too damn heavy, and Vallejo paint being wholly and completely worthless even with their polyurethane varnish so much so that just the friction of the sword resting on the shoulder rubs paint off on both points...I give up. The more I try to pose it, the more paint chips or rubs off.

I tried my goddamned hardest.

My last step was to paint a strip of cloth white for the handle.

I don't know if it's my depression or not, but I'm not sure I even want to continue this hobby anymore if acrylic is useless and the other options are health hazards.

Depends on the age of the kit, but most bb senshi are all around better in the accessory department than ex standard kits. In fact, the only thing ex standard does better than bb senshi is the articulation on some of them (but otherwise the articulation was about the same as modern bb senshi). In pretty much every other way they are worse than modern bb.

My test spoons were more durable only a few days after even without a topcoat. My spoons were one coat, and kit were 2 lighter coats so it's possibly the paint is thinner as I was afraid of covering the details.

Aside from shearing off on ball joints and pegs, and where sharp edges hit each other, the paint is holding up just fine. I'm actually wondering if I missed topcoating the sword and the paint is rubbing off. I'll look into it later after a nap.

I used brand thinner.

I used the vallejo primer, but am switching away from it as it isn't sandable. I have used both model/game color and model/game air.

Both are fairly durable when cured and the primer/top coat are also cured, but on the spoons that I only used the paint itself on, the air versions are for some reason way more durable than the regular one.

top coats and gloss coats dont need to have absolute 100% overage, just on the outer surfaces that are visible when the kit is assembled. plenty of people built the kit in sub-assembles then top coat entire sections at a time rather than piece by piece.
>>
I cannot find any First Parties that have 1/100 pilots in stock. Do any Third Party make these or are there any Alternative i can use?
>>
>>15570784

Safer to assemble after the top coats though, the top coats are there to protect the paint and not just for looks.

I usually assemble some parts after the gloss coat is cured, some of the panel lining can't be done unless assembled.
>>
>>15570551
I was using Vallejo's primer. I think I need thicker coats and more topcoat. I have a throwaway GM coming soon that I'll test it on.

http://www. maschinenkrueger.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=23:vallejo-model-paints&catid=18:tools-and-supplies&Itemid=22

From experience, the following was true about some primers having enough "tooth".

Surfacer 1200 is generally for gunpla, 1500 is when you plan to have a gloss paint job/clearcoat like for car models.

>thicker coats

I think Model Air is the way to go, too bad about the whole color range being different though.
>>
>>15570884

That seems to be mainly for handbrushing the model colors though. I have been handbrushing it without issue on top of the tamiya fine primer in the past, so I don't think I buy it completely.

Don't have any right now. If this doesn't work I'll sand it back down and just put the kit away for now I guess. This whole experience has just been incredibly frustrating is all, this isn't even the first piece that has broken. The plastic is incredibly brittle in this kit for some reason, maybe because it's old, idk.

Ok I'm calling BS on this right now. My old Hazel Kits are just fine. And I recently bought a Hazel Custom last 2 months ago and built it just fine. Blame your ham hands maybe. Just because you're a shitty builder doesn't mean it's the kit's fault.
>>
>>15571344
Never had this issue before, dude. The fin broke on TOUCH. It's a really great looking kit so far, but there is definitely a difference in plastic quality. I'm sure it's ultimately my fault, but I doubt this would be happening on a newer kit.

That pic IS the revive one. What are you, blind or something? Look at the elbow joint. Look at how far it can bend.

Plus the whole purpose of the extra Ground Type Head in the Ground War set was to make the old HG Ground Type look better because it actually had a clear visor instead of a kibble head with green sticker.

Though I'm not a fan of the fucking Ground Type Revive not having an opening hatch like the old 144...
>>
>>15573731
I actually like the shape of some of the v-fins with safety gates. Makes some of the non-edgelord kits look like they have wing fins instead of sharp pointless antennae...

I remove the safety gates on the astrays though because I like to pretend they turn into sharp boomerangs they can throw in case of emergency. But for waverider's and non-melee kits, the safety gate stays.

I was like that 8+ years ago when I first started to collect gunpla; I thought some of the 00 designs were cool and somewhat had a concern/insecurity of wanting to have a sizable collection to start off with. However aside from a few Wing 1/144s I've generally never bought any AU gunpla.

Hold off for things you actually want; you'll run out of space sooner than you think if you buy things just to try to flesh out a starter collection; get the nicest stuff. If you can buy 5+ meh HGs / a couple shittier MGs or 1 really fucking nice MG/PG etc, get that really nice one. What were at first your "hey, it looks good and is cheap enough" buys easily can become "ugh this fucking thing, why did I buy this" years later. If you like UC then probably almost anything you can think of will get a nice kit sooner or later, and if it doesn't / you don't want to wait years then there is plausibly some kind of GK of it (AUs in comparison have a piss poor GK market).
