Why does /m/ never talk about Vampire Hunter D even though it's such fantastic /m/ material?

>Far future
>Vampires in the past had a super advanced civilization
>Built giant robots out of boredom
>Went to space in advanced spaceship
>Slowly lose power over hundreds of years
>Get hunted down by a half vampire with a mechanical horse
>>
Leila is very cute and she looks a lot like Jenny Wright

The only movie adaptions focus on the early volumes, so there isn't much exposure (unless that planned TV series can ever get out of planning stages, that is).

Also, seems the manga only did 8 of the novels.

25 volumes have been published in English so they must be decently popular.

Also

>The great machine battles had primarily been contests of combat ability for those constructed at first. Unofficial historical accounts kept by the Nobility reserved a special place for the earth-shaking contests between Apollo and Hercules. The surpassing destructive power unleashed in their clashed changed the shape of mountains, wiped away valleys, and stopped the course of rivers.

>The machines of the Nobility became sentient at one point and began to fight out of petty hatred and envy of each other with brutal emotions that became battles to prove their power. In the end Hercules and Apollo hand ended their battle with neither proving the better and the massive damage and destruction of the battle churned in their wake the testament to the deciding conflict.

I heard the mangaka quit for health reasons. Pity she couldn't do more but she had a good run. Had to get the last volume in French because DMP cancelled it, though (at least I already knew the plot from the books).

The American comic "Message From Mars" seems pretty cool so far. Hopefully after issue #2 there won't be more delays.
>>
>>15565078
Why'd they cancel it? Wasn't it originally published in English? Actually, is the manga any good?
>>
Are A Wind Named Amnesia and Vampire Hunter D set in the same universe?
>>
>>15565141
>>15565141
If they are, they're so far apart that it doesn't matter. The novel of it is really good, by the way. Wataru stops at like 3 additional places during his trip.
>>
>>15565150

I wonder if Wataru and Sophie's child actually ends up causing the nobles or has origins connected to them.

Still though I think the author should've done more set in the Amnesia universe, would've been interesting seeing how humanity rebuilt itself and coping with all sorts of shit they did.

>Tfw you'll never travel across post-apocalyptic America with Sophie

The novels are really the only proper way of experiencing it I take it? I really need to try and buy a bunch of them some time, they always sound cool but you rarely ever hear anyone talk of them. The two movies were okay, but the setting is so broad that you can't really expect two movies to show it's scope I suppose.

I was surprised when I first read it how much the movie was just like it, a couple things were changed like for some reason the movie switched Doris and Lamica's hair color, and the movie didn't have Doris get naked when she attacked D on the road.

I was mildly annoyed by that.

Also, from what I recall in the book Count Lee was a lot less threatening than they made him in the film, so that's nice.

It's a standalone painting based on a scene from the second book, Raiser of Gales where D chats with the heroine Lina over a cup of joe (yes, he can drink normal stuff).

We also first learn about how the Sacred Ancestor did some pretty grisly experiments to create Nobles that can walk in daylight, and D holds a grudge because he too was a test subject.

>which frankly often seemed like he was at direct odds with whomever was in charge of the graphics
I was always under the assumption that Amano drew up everything way before production began and technical artists came in and made concepts? To be fair visuals are just now reaching the point where something like Amano's art can be 1:1 with the game

I had actually picked the series back up just a couple of days before this thread. Just finished book 8. They're definitely not without their charms. He said that he's forgotten most of what's happened in older novels. Also that he and Amano don't have control over what gets illustrated. Like there could be an important scene they want to be illustrated but the editor gets to decide what actually gets a illustrations.

I actually would've liked more introspection about what was lost when the Vamps died off, like we saw in the 2-parter where D met Baron Balasz and that virgin Vampiress had that record player that made holograms of the past.
>>
>>15571289

It is a Japan thing. The West views skinny beautiful men as gay and large, buff guys as manly while Japan views large, buff guys as gay and skinny, beautiful men as manly. They see men being buff as guys who care enough about their appearance to work out and thus gay, while naturally beautiful men aren't.
>>
>>15571308

Westerners are pretty quick to call gym bros faggy too and frankly I think it's less a Japan thing and more a certain audience thing.
>>
>>15571314

In reality yea, but the predominant audience in the West sees large, buff men as manly and the predominant audience in Japan is the opposite. There's still some variety in both and it's really more about who the major economic pushers are I suppose, but it's still simplest to break it down by region in some ways.
>>
>>15571276
The lipstick part seems like a fetish of his. I mean, look at his work on Tatsunoko shows, he used that so much that even one allegedly male villain on Gatchaman (Berg Katse) had it.

Considering how long he's been doing this, it's no wonder.

D is pretty OP, but Kikuchi is good at building tension with the supporting cast. Sometimes D gets killed with a stake or trapped somewhere for a few chapters, then we switch to the POV of his allies fighting to survive.

>>15571266
Iriya was cool. Someone even cosplayed her with Dakatsu (who does D and other Amano-inspired costumes).
>>
>>15571342

That's a really impressive bit of cosplay, but it does make it clear just how over wrought his costumes tend to be. There's a lot of little detail there and it seems like it'd be really annoying to wear, constantly creating noise and tangles even if his vampire constitution makes the weight a total non issue.

> After more than 30 years and more than 30 books, you're still spinning tales of Vampire Hunter D. Having built such a sprawling mythology for your hero, how do you keep track of it all?

>Kikuchi: That's because of my talent, haha [joking]. But, I cannot say that I keep track of it all. I only really remember all of the mythology for a couple of volumes.

>If you compare and check all volumes of D, you might find some contradictions. The points about which I am careful are these two: “don't mix up the characteristics of D”, and “not to lose sight of the purpose of the journey”. I have not told the fans about the latter.
http://thedivareview.com/Yoshitaka_Amano_Hideyuki_Kikuchi_Exclusive_Interview.htm

>LMD: Now hearing about how the editor has power over what is seen in a novel, what it is like for each of you to have your work, which you are so creatively invested in, handled by a third party?

>HK: Of course, when I’m writing my books, there are scenes where I think I would really like to have Amano-san do a picture for this, but I really don’t have a choice but to let the editor decide that.

>YA: I’m not all that satisfied with it. Often, it purely comes down to the pacing of the book. It’s purely on page count, not on ‘This would be a great scene,’ but ‘We’re X number of pages into the book and we need one here.’ So there are times when I would like to push it backward or forward a little bit to find a better scene. It’s easy enough to draw them, but there are some pictures that just plain don’t get finished.

You played the wrong D game
>>

So the novels must be awful, campy dog shit, because the first movie was atrociously bad. I'll stick to Bloodlust, thank you very much.

I've already played SOTN a million times. Now I'm tempted to play it again.

I'm shocked there hasn't been other D games, it's great material for a hack 'n slash adventure or an RPG where you can pick different classes of hunters.

The Bloodlust novel actually has a lot of good things the movie omitted. They're both worth watching to see their pros and cons. The worst thing about the first movie is that the designs are nothing like the ones from the novel and giving Doris a massive forehead.

Is there seriously not a single scan of the first issue of the kickstarter comic?

I haven't found any but it's not like buying it will cost you much since it's only 3 dollars.

Forgot VHD had dragons and didn't even realize the dinosaur thing from the first movie was meant to be a dragon. The art in the manga feels pretty iffy.

It is a bit wonky at first, but I really dig Takaki's designs for both familiar characters and ones not seen on screen yet.

I wonder if the Drake Sword/Quelaag Fury Sword from Dark Souls I was inspired by that cover. They look remarkably similar.

Actually, I'm sure there are loads of references within the game, does anyone know of any more specific examples?

Lucatiel's getup kinda reminds me of D, and Bloodborne goes without saying.

A D comic by Mike Mignola would rock. Adapting a book like Fortress of the Elder God would be right up his alley (big Lovecraft influences there), or he could whip up his own weird little story.

Who are some authors VHD/Hideyuki Kikuchi have influenced?

I remember Madoka's writer citing him somewhere and I think Fate Stay Night's author did the same.
>>

>UROBUCHI: However now I think about it again, this is the screenplay being unreasonable, as I put a fight with spear swinging around in a narrow back alley. I should have thought things over a bit more... (LOL) It was my bad habit to have events take place in a back alley when I got absent-minded. Being a follower of Hideyuki Kikuchi, I also let my story go the way of a back alley before knowing it.

>Nasu: I didn't really read that much. As I hung out more with Takeuchi, I found that we had similar tastes in manga, so I gradually got interested in reading. Then one day, he lent me 「Alien-Treasure Street」 by Hideyuki Kikuchi (*1). That sent me over the edge. And as I kept asking him to lend me more novels, I started to get interested in writing them myself.

>Editor: So you're saying that Hideyuki Kikuchi inspired you to write novels?

>Nasu: Yes. There's no other author that's influenced me more than he has.

He's basically inspired two of the biggest otaku related creators of recent memory.

Thanks!

I've only read like 15 of the novels, and it's kinda repetitive. He goes somewhere and act all cool, save some damsel, we get some hints about his connection to the big boss, and then he beats some vampire's bullshit power with asspulls.

Some of the time he wins with his bullshit hand, some of the time "D won with his superior swordsmanship against a power that shouldn't be beaten by swordsmanship. Because reasons." I'm really not sure what there is to talk about.

Formulaic is fine sometimes. New book comes out, I'm entertained for a while then I move on to other things until the next volume hits. It's like 007 or Godzilla.
>>
>>15580383

you know as hype as I am for the Warren Ellis Castlevania series, Mike Mignola would have been mind blowing
>>
>>15581613
You wouldn't marathon an episodic anime.
>>
>>15581991

There's that to consider too. I think a lot of people are generally hard on episodic story telling when telling an ongoing narrative was never really the point.

We see people complain about filler or shows with no ongoing story beyond what happens in each episode as if they where some kind of expert on the medium but really these books and shows are often just a way to kill some time and have some fun. A huge part of speculative fiction is often transporting the audience to a new world and engaging the imagination with wonderful sights and characters, it's fine to write a story with the short term in mind.

So how do the novels' translations read? I'm thinking of picking up a couple to give a read, since I enjoyed the hell out of the movies.

>>15571330
Amano does my fucking favorite Elric. He fucking nails the ethereal feeling of the character's stories.

I'm not a lit snob but they read fine to me ignoring a few confusing scenes

Pretty solid. Kevin Leahy is a longtime fan and friends with Kikuchi so he puts a lot of care into his work.

Yep. Kevin's a fun dude, his reports on the Talk Live events Kikuchi holds for fans are quite amusing.
