Alright /m/en post really unconventional and non-traditional mecha deigns.
I wanna see some really crazy stuff preferable from anime, but anything goes.

>>15561248
El Medine is probably my favorite mech design ever
>Humanoid
>Unconventional
Try again, or I'll continue posting faster than you can say "Zoids"
>>15561292
That's not a mecha, dumbass.
>>15561292
>a fucking sphere with shit on it
Mate, have you looked down recently? Spheres aren't unconventional design for large objects at all.
>>15561292
Well i didn't explicitly mean humanoids, but I'd like to see more interesting designs that balls with guns strapped to them.
>>15561391
Reminds me of the robot in chrono trigger.
>>15561244
Fafners are so ugly. It's good that Washio perfected the proportions with Barbatos.
>>15561415
I mean everyone has diffrent tastes but the Barbatos is too safe.
There aren't really any risks taken with its design.
Washio was specifically instructed to design something that couldn't be made into toys with the Fafners, the Gundams are model kits before they even exist.
This have him the freedom to do as he wished with the farmers and I think it have us some really interesting and memorable stuff.
If anything the Barbatos is just a revamped version of Washio's rejected Exia design.
>>15561292
Christ those are so fucking ugly.
>>15561460
>Washio was specifically instructed to design something that couldn't be made into toys with the Fafners
Source???
My understanding is that the Fafner RDs were produced with creative input from Fafner's creators. It strikes me as odd Fafner creators would be involved in the development of toys when they wanted the Fafners' designs not to be toys.
AoZ has some weird shit
Does this count?

Really like the Iconic field designs, shame it's just a short but maybe it might get funding/spiritual adaptation?
>>15562042
>>15562044
Can't find a coloured pic of the rival's mech unfortunately.
>>15561511
>>It strikes me as odd Fafner creators would be involved in the development of toys when they wanted the Fafners' designs not to be toys.
Not the first anon, but that doesn't seem like much of a reason against the existence of Side FFN.
Deliberately making designs that can't be made into toys mean little. If Xebec management wanted a deal for Fafner merch with Bandai and Bandai agreed because they could handle the materials designs and corrections to make merch out of it, there is nothing that the creative crew on Fafner could have done or said in opposition.
To add, the first Fafner RDs came out in 2010, years after the first season in 2004 and two years after the very first Robot Spirits releases in 2008. It's not surprising that whatever benchmark for "not feasible" that was in 2004 might have become obsolete by 2010.

What is this from?

Steel Battalion mechs always had an "industrial" vibe that appealed to me.
>>15562345
Who designed these? They remind me of ACV.
>>15562366
Junji Okubo.
There's a few other things he's done that elude my memory at the moment, but his most iconic stuff in my opinion has to be his VT design for Steel Battalion.
That said they don't really have enough of a junkyard aesthetic to fit in alongside gen-V Armored Core. I mean they do have a sort of Muscle Tracer feel to them, but Vertical Tanks are like properly manufactured military grade scarecrows with guns, as opposed to the salvaged heaps of metal powered by post-nuclear superscience that are the midget-Cores of V.
>>15562345
>>15562390
really enjoy steel battalion's look, towering gun platforms are the shit. god I wish there was someway to emulate that game
>>15561460
What art book is this from?
>>15561518
You mean some fucking awesome stuff
>>15562366
Junji Okubo also did designs for Gundam for the barrel
>>15562492
No idea, it was a 00 Gundam concept art image I found aged ago.
>>15561511
Washio supervised the RDs IIRC. This happened a lot more with old RDs, for example Heroman and Tauburn were like that too. They also had full access to the CGI models that were used in the movie and Exodus to design the RDs.
>>15561515
i forgot it had legs
>>15562542
Was anything animated ever produced for this?
>>15562585
Sadly no.
>>15562339
>suddenly-- gratuitous shotacon boob touch
FORWHATPURPOSE.jpg
Contrary to popular belief you cannot feel a large breasted woman's heartbeat by palming one or both of their humongous tits. The heart lies near the center and can only be palpated either near the collar bone or by placing one's hand directly between the cleavage area.
>that one scene where the same blue haired woman did a stupidly hammy interpretive dance while grieving the folly of some supposed 100 year thing that far outlasted itself
the fuuuuck?aside from that though, the concept seems interesting and the mecha designs are absolute sex. I'm super fucking interested and want to know more about what the hell is actually going on.inb4 it will never have an anime.not even an ova.
>>15561528
Took me a minute to notice that there's a robot doing the Gunbuster pose inside of the bigger robot. That's fantastic.
>>15562078
Valid points, anon. Xebec=/=Fafner creators makes sense.
>>15562557
Yeah, I know. I was just asking for a source for what the other anon said about the creators wanting the Fafners not to be toys because I am skeptical.
BTW, I have a Fafner RD and it's awesome both as a design and as a toy. I really wish Bandai would involve the respective mecha designers in the development of RDs, as they did before.
A lot of the Giant Robo 2007 mecha were somewhat bizarre.
>>15562728
They're not strictly as unconventional as some, but the proportions are atypical and the designs are very art-nouveau.
>>15562733
They remind me a lot of the Big O designs, actually.
>>15562734
especially the concept art
>>15562737
The thing to study to make good mechs isn't mechanical design, it's architecture and fashion.
>>15562755
Like, a lot of gundam stuff seems downright incestuous.
>>15562759
While I somewhat agree with this you have to emember that some continuity has to be kept.
The UC,AG,AD and CE are particualrly good at this because their MS look like they were developed from other MS within that setting, so everything looks homogeneous.
>>15562755
Why?
>>15561607
What game is this Mecha KISS from?
>>15561378
Fuck I love Neihi's Mecha design.
>>15562542
He also designed the Libertas and Zenito ships from Infinite Space.
>>15562381
>>15563054
And iirc one of the other big things he worked on was the designs for Strike Suit Zero.
>>15563117
And here we see the ray perform its mating dance
>>15563117
>Ray
Am I the only one who thought and wished that Metal Gear Ray would transform into something that resembled Jehuty when it first showed up in MGS2?
Those motherfucking Z.O.E. Boxes in-game did not help either...
>Syd Mead
Legs for days
>>15561244
I always thought the 4 legs in Armored Core looked pretty unique
>Sphere with spindly limbs and missile pod wings
She's so close to being a great, odd looking mecha design, if only the designers had taken a more minimalistic approach and didn't ruin the whole sphere torso look further with her "prime" skin
>>15564725
I... I don't get what's going on here...
It has no arms but has a giant hand in the shape of a wing attached to it's calves? Is that it?
>>15563273
Indeed
>>15564814
Heres another
>>15564814
Great image, but that ridiculous monocycle never fails to make me laugh.
>>15564846
Yeah
Now that i took a closer look
How is he able to enter it
Like theres no doors or anything?
But yeah syds concept designs are always a treat to examine
>>15564814
>Zaku with beam weapons
>Torus instead of O'Neill
>unimotorad
why is mead such a hack?
>>15564882
>because you lay with people with the same genitals as yourself
>because you touch yourself in public and all the time
>because your mother and or father never hugged you enough?
pick one. they're all apt.
>>15565201
This is Gyobu right? What is it from?
>>15562755
Fuck off Naganocuck
>>15565403
G-Reco
>>15563273
That's the painting that inspired Joe Johnston and the ILM guys to design the AT-AT for Empire Strikes Back
>>15565688
Oh is that it? I figured maybe he was one of the concept artists for it.

By the way do you have a link for this artbook? Or at least a name?

>>15562677Based on the video, all the humans on that planet do not have hearts. Instead, they are kept alive by gigantic dolls that animates anything shaped like a humanoid. Ancient human colonists arrived on the planet long ago, but seeing as it is inhospitable of sustaining life, created a servile race to terraform the planet. This servile race was aware that they were just puppets, and yet they had minds of their own, as evidence of the clay hearts they made in desperation, hoping to save them when the real humans turned of the machines that are animating them. Sometime in the past, either the servile race rose up and destroyed the original humans, or a faction of these original humans betrayed the others to prevent the genocide of the sapient servile race. Either way, a faction of ancient humans are currently part of a conspiracy to hide the truth from the servile race, sabotaging their space program, and drawing blame upon themselves to hide the truth that the rest of the population are just sapient puppets.Seeing as how hearts are considered fiction, there's probably no animal life in the world either, and they're all vegetarians.

whatdolls? I don't remember seeing that in the short... Or did you mean the actual mecha?
