I'll take a balance of all three.

I enjoy a specialization in anything so this pleases me. But does defense have nothing other than defense? Defense paired with heavy weapons (Vulcans, high power cannon, explosives, very large melee weapon, etc) are best, but if it's just a shield I'd take melee.

But isn't Defense technically better than Melee, as you can use the shield as both a defensive and offensive weapon?

I mean, sure, I'd want to have some weapons mounted onto the shield or something, but I think the shield comes out on top.

Might depend, melee might simply be overwhelming pwoer at close range with shitty defense, probably by hitting hard and trying to dodge or something like that

A shield normally isn't a good weapon, if not at all. If you just specialize in defense you become pretty much a big target that takes a while to die. I would want to be a supportive role of have my own strong armaments otherwise I rather be proactive and go melee.

I don't want to die but I don't want to be Lelouch and just bumble around in a nigh impossible mecha.
