I liked the first half of the show and the mech designs are cool. I'm a sucker for mecha that can transform and still look cool in either mode. And motorcycle cockpits are definitely not over-utilized in anime.

After they go to the dragon realm the amount of stupid starts outweighing what the show had going for it up to that point.

Mixed.

On the one hand, its first half is enjoyably trashy, got some decent concepts and the character designs aren't terrible (and certainly not Hiraifaced like SEED was). Also the music and mecha designs are pretty gud too.

On the other hand, the second half borders the line between trashy bad and legitimately bad. The animation is mediocre to shitty more often than not, and many of those concepts, as well as characterization, were either underused or dropped because of fanservice. And they couldn't even do that right.

This show either needed better writing/directing/animators, less obtrusive fanservice or more episodes (or a mix thereof).

Cross Ange is proof that you shouldn't judge a show by its ratings. I can honestly say that it had its problems and wasn't perfect but it was - if nothing else - entertaining. Same way I felt about Valvrave. I won't say that there weren't flaws but if the point of media is to entertain I can say I was entertained. Even at times when thing get a little stupid.

Like pic related. Its pretty stupid but the concept is entertaining. Or like that moment in Valvrave (Eps 20 - I think) when the people the MC was protecting inexplicably turn on him. The setup doesn't always make sense but the concept is entertaining.

Tusk wasn't even revealed until that opening. Japan thought it was a yuri show before that. Then even though Ange x Tusk was obviously the endgame they still teased Ange X Hilde a whole lot. Secondly, on a pure technical level, the drawings themselves looked rather rushed and lazy. I'm not talking "Oh, the character needed less detail because they were far away" either. Watching this show because of SRW V and I gotta say... it's pretty awful so far. I'm halfway through episode 9 and Hilda got rejected by her Mom because she's a Norma. Hilda's sister was so freaked out after her mana barrier got trashed that she passed out. I couldn't help but laugh at this scene. The whole premise of Norma being these "inhuman monsters" is a joke.
