The concept was good, as was the first episode in general. I loved the idea of a melee/martial arts robot, just not the execution. I'd have preferred that Sekai use something with a Mack Knife like body that is super posable and looks a bit like it's wearing a gi and had an SD Gundam style face, because I think the expressiveness would have suited his bombastic personality and fighting style.

There was nothing enjoyable about them. The show treated them like some kind of noble rivals who understand that gunpla battle is about having fun and imagination, basically a whole team of Meijins.

But they were nothing like that, they were arrogant smug dicks who looked down on others (with exception of Try Fighters because muh worthy rivals) and fought to win in a no fun allowed way. The only exception was Saga who was doing a stereotypical jerk rival schtick but at least seemed to enjoy himself while doing it.

Part of my problem with Try was how goddamn boring the main cast was compared to BF's, and the worst part is it felt that the only one out of the main team that grew was Yuuma.

Just give Shimon some snapfit Impulse for the first few episodes until he masters his gunpla skills after hanging around Gyanko and Minato for long enough for him to make some Destiny/God Gundam kitbash thing that can do some Double God Shining Burning Finger shit., tweak the 3v3 rules so that Minato can use Tryon 3 on his own, or better yet throw out the 3v3 dynamic and just make it just a general team focus that varies between 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 bouts. 3v3 CAN be interesting (The EZSR fight comes to mind), but Try's best battles were all some form of 1v1 hidden in 3v3 environments (Tryon 3 vs Lightning Gundam, Transient vs Crossbone Full Cloth)

They could have fixed things if they just wrote the main group better.

Yeah, I get they wanted to drive home the point that Fumina was more talented than she gave herself credit for. But their execution for making them rivals was terrible.
At least with Yuuma and Adou, that rivalry made sense, even if it was based entirely on Yuuma's one-sided grudge. And even Wilfred with Sekai, because of the generic "Strongest guy wants someone who can give him a challenge" was better than Shia suddenly deciding Fumina was her rival.

At least to me, Shia was the worst written character in the whole show because everything about her and that she did felt so incredibly forced.

We're so starved by predictable, formulaic, play-it-safe show constructions at this point that anything that breaks from the norm is refreshing. People had a lot of hope for IBO when it launched because it looked like the very things they'd wanted for years, were even a few anons talking about agreeing to all watch it bare-chested. That hope went away pretty quick.

But imagine this: there's a timeline where GBF was as it was here, and Try actually followed up well, building even more hype. And quite possibly, even in that same timeline, IBO was good too, and there were generals where people shared pics of themselves bare-chested in solidarity... only to be shamed by not being as fit as the characters, and thus long-winded discussions and ongoing tracking of body-building progress ensued. Thus IBO became the show that got a lot of /m/en ripped.
