What is /m/ thought on Star citizen? The biggest crowdfunding project in history with the $150 million mark?

It's either going to be one of gaming's greatest achievements or one of the biggest disappointments ever.

Actually it's gaming's greatest scam. Personally I can't wait for it to fail to deliver and finally teach the world a lesson on crowdfunding bullshit.

It's a waste. Just imagine what KTGust, Falcom or Atlus could do with 150 million.

Inspired me to play Wingcommander Prophecy and Starlancer again so it's not all bad.

A wonderful dream that was overhyped and became a scam. If there's no news about Squadron 42 by next Fall I'm cashing out. Squadron 42 is why I backed in 2012. They've been mum on it for over a year and a half, instead focusing on cash grabs and shiny tech demos.I've pretty much lost hope.
>>
>>15547901
What is their excuse for delaying the solo campain Squadron 42?
>>
I'm actually a bit optimistic after the latest demos that they actually have something here. Looked fucking sweet. I'll wait to see how everything unfolds, but I don't think it's a "scam" like some of you guys are saying. At least not anymore. A couple of years ago I'd have said that since I generally don't trust kikestarter projects, but so far it seems like they are coming along, despite painfully slowly. I don't want to get my hopes up for anything though.
>>
>>15547941
Voice acting and cinematics apparently.
>>
sell me on this
>>
>>15548277

At one time, the highest-funded Kickstarter videogame project ever made, with funding still ongoing, an ode to old-time space sims made by the guy behind Starlancer, Freelancer and Wing Commander. Very, very, very slowly progressing.
>>
Why would a company try to make a good product if they already have the money?

Because a lot of people actually believe in what they're making? Even a lot of corporate goons do. Though I guess you wouldn't know.

Bless the Maker and His water.

>What

the fuck does an update have to do with anything being a scam or not?
>>
>>15548682
If you're wasting the money you already made by scamming to pay other people to create what you promised you're not a scammer anymore, you're the scammed.
>>
>>15548652
The Skarp laser razor is still getting regular updates.
Project Phoenix is still getting regular updates.
Those stupid eink shoes are still getting regular updates.
Ouya got plenty of updates.
Mighty No 9 got plenty of updates.
>>
>>15546353
>That piss-ass budget
>People think it'll be a flop
It's not even on the level of major AAA games like Halo 5 or Mass Effect Andromeda in terms of budget, why does everyone act like it should be a 10/10? It's just a big indie.
>>
>>15548993

140 million fucking dollars. This puts it in the top 5 most expensive games EVER.
>>
>>15549329
Its also important to note that for many AAA games a good chunk of that budget is marketing. Star Citizen has relied mostly on word of mouth and hasn't spent much on marketing. Even if you believe the rumors Derek Smart peddles about them hiring a reputation management company, the cost is a fraction of what other studios pay to advertise their game.
>>
>>15549419
This, it's likely in second or third place for the most expensive development ever, behind TORtanic, and probably behind Destiny, but ahead of GTAV

Anyway, the moment I heard that there would be a FPS component and landing on planets was the moment I knew shit was fucked. Their hearts are weighed down by gravity.

If you want to make a space game, make a damn space game.
>>
>>15548373
I said good product. They will just release some buggy mess and that's it.

>>15548652
>Because a lot of people actually believe in what they're making
lol, okay kid
>>
>>15546380
>teach the world a lesson on crowdfunding bullshit.
Wasteland 2 was good nigga
So is Torment although I haven't finished it yet
>>
To be fair, if I was making a literal fortune off empty promises on an unreleased game for years on end I'd never actually release it either.
>>
>>15546353
>A Derek Smart related game
I'm going to go ahead and guess all the people funding it are under the age of 25. Because NO ONE who knows who Derek Smart is and lived through the 90s would touch ANYTHING he's involved in, or even go anywhere NEAR it.
>>
>>15546353
If it ever comes out, even if it's a good game it's going to be a massive let down to most people. The hype has gone too high and too long, it's going to kill it.

Maybe it'll pull it off but I don't see it happening.
>>
So does no one remember Derek Smart used to be the biggest joke in the PC gaming industry in the 90s?
>>
>>15549803
He made good games in the past.
>>
>>15549828
What reality are you living in?
>>
>>15549830
Wing Commander III & IV
Conquest: Frontier Wars
strike commander
Freelancer
>>
>>15549843
Now look at all the games he solely developed and wasn't just on a dev team for.
>>
>>15549846
He was the director for those games actually. He was also the writer for Wing commander 3
>>
>>15549849
>He was the director for those games actually.

>Wing Commander III & IV
Frank Savage and Anthony Morone

>Conquest: Frontier Wars
His name isn't even in the fucking credits.

>strike commander
Chris Roberts

>Freelancer
Also Chris Roberts

Jesus Christ...
>>
>>15549849
>He was also the writer for Wing commander 3
Derek Smart is neither Terry Borst nor Frank De Palma.
>>
>>15549843
>>15549849
Wow I didn't know Derek Smart stooped so low he was claiming credit for other people's work, especially sad when we live in the age of google...
>>
>>15546380
Didn't that already happen with that other space game that made headline news?
>>
>>15549878

That at least explains why people are falling for this scam.

Still though, any involvement from Derek Smart should be an automatic red flag.
>>
>>15546952
As long as consumerism is a large part of First world culture, people will mismanage their money or just have more than they know what to do with. Having an endless sinkhole to throw it down into must be calming to some people.
>>
>>15549803
Wait, I thought Derek Smart hated Star Citizen? I read a bunch of articles about how he was "picking a fight with it" and thought Chris Roberts was gonna fail.

You're not counting development work and infrastructure. most AAA games are made by huge publishers with pre-existing networks of developers, offices, engines, assets, etc.

Isn't Derek Smart the Battlecruiser 3000 AD guy? He keeps pushing the meme that Star Citizen will fail so you should all buy his latest 3D space pilot game.

To be fair if someone has disposable income to spend on their hobby there's nothing wrong with it.

Some people pay a thousands of dollars on courtside basketball tickets. Whatever makes you happy.
>>
>>15549990
>the meme that Star Citizen will fail
Not so much a meme as a fact that everyone except the people blinded by throwing their money down the drain hoping to get something back can see.
>>
>>15550140
You are rather pessimistic.
>>
For everybody who keeps saying FREELANCER, I will point out that Microsoft fired Chris Roberts during the development because he kept missing deadlines and promising new features in interviews, eventually leaving MS with a half-finished game they had to rush out the door.
>>
>>15550777
Well this explains everything
>>
>>15550378
You're an idiot if you think Star Citizen will ever live up to a 1/100th of what they said it would be, if the game ever gets a complete release - which it most definitely won't.
>>
>>15549990
Yes. But the thing is, with regards to Star Citizen, he's not entirely wrong. Sure he gets sensationalist and can reach tin foil hat levels of conspiracies regarding the project, but his core points are spot on. The project was over hyped, the hype went to Chirs Robert's head and as a result they've over promised to the point they will never be able to deliver.

Recent fundraising antics by CIG* also lead me to suspect that his claims they're running low on money have some merit.

*(The rigged referral contest, the fact they're now charging for a previously free method of changing what ships you have, selling a concept ship they originally pitched as low cost starter ship for several times the original price bracket and the continual offering of new multihundred dollar ships)
>>
>>15550002

My #1 reason for wanting Star Citizen to come out is just so Derek Smart will continue being wrong about everything.
>>
I liked Wing Commander but if Chris Roberts and the Star Control team were drowning and I could only save one, I'd save the Star Control team first.
>>
>>15551369
This. I actually spent $10 on Battlecruiser 3000 way back in the day, when it was in the Scholastic Book Catalogue.

What a fucking waste of money. I could never get it working, the missions were shit, and there was no story whatsoever. I've hated him ever since.

HISTORY REPEATS
>>
>>15552990
Depends on who is working with him
>>
>>15556689
Many of the good people working with him on Star Citizen bailed on the project a few years back. Many of the other top people on the project have also quietly left over the past few years. I think right now the biggest problem the project has is that there isn't anyone to tell him no.
