Thoughts on this show? Looking for something new to watch.
>>
How does it compare to Beast Wars?
>>
>>15539914

Was okay

>>15539915

Beast Wars was only really good maybe a third of the time. Prime never hits it's highs but it's overall Id say more consistent
>>
>>15539914
the most boring Optimus Prime of all, but one of the best Megatron
>>
>>15539918
>Beast Wars was only really good maybe a third of the time.
The entertaining character banter carried it through a lot of the rough spots in my opinion. And I liked the time twist.

Hopefully Prime will measure up.
>>
>>15539928
Gloriously voiced by Peter Cullen though. I'd listen to that man narrate paint dry.
>>
>>15539914
For what it's worth, it probably has the best human cast of any Transformers work. Hell, my favorite character was actually one of said humans. That's really the only thing super notable about it, though. Was a little too grim for for my tastes, though not near as much as Beast Machines, thankfully.
>>
>>15539928
I think it's Frank Welker's best Megatron. It helps that he's written more like BW megs not senile G1 megs.

Anyway the show suffered from the same CGI technical issues with Beast Wars, i.e. It's hard to generate new assets, so they have to work creatively.

They also had the same issue with Animated about not knowing when they'll be cancelled. As a result there are a lot of plot threads that are hastily and unsatisfying resolved or just left dangling.
>>
Its got some pretty nice fight scenes. I was honestly surprised.

One of the better Transformers cartoons. Solid voice cast, the CG looks nice, the real main issue like others have said is the story but even that's pretty good in some parts.
Soundwave and Knockout are best characters.
>>
>>15540448
and then they followed it up with that terrible sequel with bumblebee as the lead
>>
Pretty solid, liked it enough to import the show. Good tv CGI, decent squishy humans, great Cons, sick bantz decent design aesthetic. Really the only thing that lets it down are the dangling plot threads and eleents introduced to sell toys. If they'd been left to their own devices it would have been a masterpiece. As is though it's solid.
>>
>>15540479
Have you watched RID at all? It's getting better. Bumblebee isn't that bad a character either in this version. He's similar to BW Primal and Animated OP.
>>
It's pretty awful.
>>
>>15540493
>and elements introduced to sell toys.
Like every other Transformers series.
>>
>>15539918
I only remember like three bad episodes of Beast Wars, having watched it all last year. Prime on the other hand feels boring and uninteresting half the time.
>>
I think it's right under the par for western Transformers cartoons. I don't think I'd even watch it again, unlike Animated and Beast Wars.

I kind of despise this show. Not because it was bad. Far from it. But it has so many teased, or poorly explored concepts that the whole show gives you a huge case a blue balls and offers very little satisfaction. I don't know if the writers were being held back or what, but shit like pic related should have been amazing, and wasn't allowed to be. It was well produced but was honestly a frustrating experience.
>>
It's a toned-down version of Beast Wars (in terms of awesome) and its direct spiritual successor as well.
Prime is the weakest "best" series. It isn't as good as Animated or Beast Wars, but probably better than anything else.
I enjoyed it a lot, despite many wasted opportunities and plot-lines.
>>
>>15539914
Animated was better.

Arcee is a hot bike though.

THIS!!

If ever there was a Human/Cybertronian relationship that could have been pulled off and been believable, it was hers with her human... Jack if i remember right.
>>
>>15540621
It didn't bother me as much, but there definitely is a number of things that feel like they didn't really get a chance. That said, there's also quite a few that I thought would never get touched on again that do get brought back in at least a semi-prominent way. It made the show feel like it had an actual continuity to it, even if parts weren't explored properly.
>>
>>15540896
>good figure with all three modes never
>>
Lots of great concepts that kind of go underexplored, but overall it's a fairly decent show. Good animation and it easily has the best interpretations of Megatron and Starscream. Starscream is actually somewhat competent and Megs doesn't put up with his bullshit.
>>
>>15540917
Guy rode her every day.
>>
>>15539933

Cullen sounds neither like Prime used to nor has an appropriate voice for the character anymore. The man is aged and tired and you can hear it. You can't have him voice young/middle aged characters anymore. It comes off as creepy as the old people kids in Akira. He should be voicing Alpha Trion instead.
Plus he can't express emotions anymore.

>inb4 the writers doesn't write Prime with emotions

Aligned Prime has been confused, angry, distressed and Cullen sounded nothing but a little strained at best.
>>
>Optimus has lost his memory! What will come of this shocking development? Nothing? Why doesn't he remember not remembering?

>An evil human faction that wants transformer technology! Oh man this will be interesting ah they're all dead by the second appearance.

>Optimus just got the Star Saber! Oh it's gone by the next episode.

>Starscream has decided to make his own faction with black jack and hookers! Never mind nothing came of it.

>Dreadwing has aided the Autobots, surely this will lead to an interesting arc for- nope he's dead.

>Oh man, they've kidnapped the kids and brought them to Cybertron. Why did they just drop the magic stick that instantly paralyzes robots?
>>
>>15541225
Was this episode writers working against each other, or was Hasbro insisting they retain some sort of status quo? (Which seems pointless, they had to have known the show wasn't going to stay around forever, might as well let it progress naturally)
>>
>>15541260
Animated did this a little bit too. Remmeber when Rodimus and his team show up as if they are being introduced for future use? And we never see them (or the decpiticons they fight) for the rest of the show. I think it might have been Hasbro higher ups trying to make sure nether show got too complex for children or something along those lines.
>>
Since this is the Transformers thread, I thought I'd ask:
How do you guys feel about the new Hollywood flick? Are they just making up canon as they go or is there some basis in the comics/animation that they're adapting?

TF Prime is a VERY good show. My second favorite, after Beast Wars of course.
>>
>>15541286
Everything in each movie seems to be inspired by small bits from various episodes. Like age of extinction had the bomb that could turn shit into metal, like the G1 episode where Megatron could do the same with Vector Sigma's key. Doesn't the new movie have quintessons or something?
>>
>>15541272
There was even a "canon" comic where BW megs showed up as a dimensional jumber, where he tried to conquer Animated Continuity with the name of "joe"

also we had Rattrap, though he looked Lame.

After how fucking tedious the moon one was, I have literally no interest in them. Seeing the trailer just made me think of how dull the actual movie was going to be.
>>

>>
>>15541286
Cautiously optimistic.

I liked Age of Extinction with the except of the back half feeling like they crashed too many plots into it.

Assuming they can get the pacing down right, I might enjoy it a lot more than I think.

Why is Hot Rod french?
>>
>>15539914
A very decent show. Definitively the best of the decade, although that's not saying much.
>>
>>15541286
Haven't seen one since the second, humor got too immature, focused on the humans too much, and the transformer designs kept getting worse and worse.

All that on top of Micheal Bay being a colossal douche that has no respect for his fans.
>>
>>15541286
Based exclusively on the trailer I saw when I went to see GotG 2, it looks like shit.
>>
>>15541140
>The man is aged and tired and you can hear it.
I think that works for Prime. He's been at war for millions of years, he's seen his world reduced to a lifeless wasteland, his friends and brothers slaughtered by a relentless enemy, and all he ever really wanted was to be a book keeper.

He's borne the weight of an entire civilization on his shoulders for centuries and I think it makes sense that he's got very little left in him. All he can do is keep fighting, and fighting, and fighting. That's all he has left.
>>
>>15541225
Don't forget
>Smokescreen I believe you can be the leader for the future
>JK we need more Bumblebee circlejerk in the sequel
>>
>>15541410
Bay's not so subtle way of cuing fans that this Hot Rod will never amount to anything, no Matrix, no Prime, no whatever. Because he's a foreigner.

I haven't watched any cartoon since S1 or S2 of Prime.

How many shows have been cancelled since then and what's the current thing?
>>
>>15539914

im still waiting for RiD S3

so i can see This scene, because really hasbro will push "neutral backstabby" starscream on S3 into aligned

also Windblade already Replaced Slipstream on Aligned, and there's already someone named Slipstream.

RiD combiner wars will be a short resume of the comics
>>
>>15543365
1 or 2? Nothing that made press like Prime did.
>>
>>15543375
Combiner Force so far has kept itself limited to Earth and it doesn't look like that'll change anytime soon.

Which is weird since with Optimus, Windblade and Starscream en route to Cybertron and all this talk about the new Cybetronian leadership makes you think something important is going down there.

Kind of like watching the side-story while the main thing is taking place somewhere else.
>>
>>15539914
Bayformers done right. Kinda hate that they built up to something between Jack and Arcee but never had the balls to see it to its logical conclusion.
>>
>>15539914
Arcee, Peter Cullen Optimus, Baybee and Samurai Jack were awful but the Decepticon roster was pretty based.

I know it's his destiny in all of Transfromers media but I was still disappointed.
>>
>>15547131
I feel like he got a better run in this one than usual. Might just be me liking Ironside.
>>
>>15545374
The creators did say at the start the idea was to have Arcee be a sort of "older sister" mentor figure to Jack. People (aka deviants) are probably reading too much into it.
>>
>>15541260
Only thing I remember is Prime's memory loss had to be kept to a minimum because of Hasbro's demands.

As I recall, the writers also claimed at one point that they ran out of ideas because they cycled through them too fast. Which you can totally see in the show. Nearly every interesting story or character idea they had is swiftly done away with, only for yet another "scavenger hunt" to take its place.

Writing was a mess, the creators clearly had ideas but no real clue of how to milk them for their worth. This made the show really, really frustrating. Stuff like Beast Wars and Animated suffered from that too, but at least those were fun and I found the characters more memorable.
>>
>>15547131

>>
>>15539914
I never finished it, but it's better than most. It's better than Beast Wars, overall. I think Beast Wars's quality is a little inflated sometimes even if its peaks might be higher than Prime's.

I never watched much of Animated so I don't know how it compares. As its own action adventure cartoon Prime is definitely solid, if underwhelming with respect to potential. I liked it.
>>
>>15552986
yeah, well there is that, but still

>The Prime writers admitted that, not knowing what to do with the character, Shockwave was not going to survive his debut episode, before eventually coming up with a way to incorporate the character as a regular during the third season.
now we know the reason why theres plenty of characters died only to reappear again as clones or zombies
>>
>>15556585
>reappear again as clones or zombies
That's mostly because it was time-consuming for the animation studio to generate new assets, particularly Transformers since they required 3 working models each (robot, mid-transformation, alt-mode).

They had to resort to a bunch of tricks to meet the timeline, including small casts, blending in 2D paintings in the background, repurposing the models (cliffjumper>tailgate, wheeljack>makeshift, optimus>ultra magnus, etc.), clone armies, etc. In a way, it's the same limitations Beast Wars/Machines faced despite the shows being made more than a decade apart.
>>
>>15539914
It's Transformers. Not much to say aside from how it's utterly pathetic when they try to tell a serious story with this retarded concept.
>>

Literally who? No, really. I don't remember either of them being in the show.
>>

Tailgate was Arcee's old partner before Cliff. Makeshift was the shape shifting bot who was pretending to be Wheeljack in he character's introduction episode.
>>
>>15556649
>:D
>>
>>15557355
Tailgate is Arcee's other dead partner, he's shown in flashbacks using cliffjumper's model, as a silhouette.

Makeshift is the shapeshifting decepticon from one episode where he infiltrates the autobot base by disguising as Wheeljack.

It's consistently better than Beast Wars.

Whoa, whoa there. Them's fighting words!

Lemme put things in context. Prime came after Animated and the movies. After Animated's light atmosphere, Prime's super gritty edgelordiness was a breath of fresh air.

Sure, it had its problems, like Miko and a general adherence to the status quo. But it also had great action and character building. If it had any one thing holding it back, I'd say it's the lack of a big epic plot. Yeah, there were major events, but it didn't really have a long term build up/pay off event.

Now as for Beast Wars, the show looked bad even when it first came out, despite having what was then, cutting edge cg. The first season was okay. I mean, it wasn't bad, but it didn't hit the ground running like Prime did. But it was an adequate first season and it set the foundation for later seasons. You also gotta take into account that it had stiff competition back in the day, such as Reboot (they even shared the same finale stinger/twist) and Gargoyles. So in context, the first season wasn't that impressive.

But it gets better. And epic stuff happens. And it had way more fan moments like scenes with "Unicron" and G1 Megatron etc. Ultimately, it's probably more memorable than Prime.

But on a consistent level? Well, Prime slows down a bit in the later seasons but it never really got bad. Whereas Beast Wars just got better from season 2 onwards. So really, it's that first season that gives Prime the edge.

Like, if we were to represent this in a chart, Prime would start out high and maintain its performance. Beast Wars started maybe at a mid level and ended very high.

Prime definitely had the more cancerous fanbase though. Not to mention Animated-fags who were still butthurt that RotF contributed to that show's cancellation.

Whereas Beast Wars' fanbase are united through the camaraderie of the Geewun-Beast Wars War (aka the Trukk vs Munky War).
>>
>>15553032

I think nostalgia plays a part in at least some people's opinion of Beast Wars. I never really watched Transformers at all as a kid, so about 8 years back (in my mid 20s) I watched Beast Wars, Beast Machines and Animated after liking the animated G1 film when I saw it and I really struggled with Beast Wars. It was okay, and I really liked one or two of the characters (Scorponok as a villain, Waspinator as a comic relief character) but I thought it was way too episodic for much of it's run and that it tended to brush off some major things. The specific example I'll always think of being Dinobot's death, which was a mostly mediocre episode with a really good ending and then the guys is never mentioned again and the next episode has nothing to do with him. I'm aware the creators wanted to do more with his death and weren't allowed, but after hearing about it (Rattrap wanted to clone him or some shit? I can't recall) I remember thinking it might be better they were just told to move on.

I think Beast Wars is kind of overblown in the public discourse, because after all the talk I'd seen of it I expected a nearly seamless story with in depth character work and it was mostly just a slightly better 90's cartoon for having consistent not entirely cliche characterization as well as occasion on-going plots. My favorite part of it was really just watching the early 3D animators play around with the form and seeing what they could do with it, like emulating Looney Tunes physical comedy at times. Everything I expected out of Beast Wars I got instead in Beast Machines, which has worse designs and the characters aren't as interesting but tells a single story and has multiple ongoing plots as well as a really threatening Megatron.

Animated is my favorite, but Beast Wars is probably the only one I saw that I disliked, at least partially because it's too overblown.
>>
>>15559337
>then the guys is never mentioned again
Are you sure you watched the whole thing? He's mentioned quite prominently in the last couple episodes at least.
>>
>>15559163

>and so the trukk leaned that the Munky was better, because Sometimes.... Crazy Works!
>>
>>15559337
>but tells a single story and has multiple ongoing plots
That's because it was written in its entirety in advance before production, practically unheard of at the the time (and even now). That said, I just couldn't get into Beast Machines, hard as I tried.

The fun characters from Beast Wars was what drove the series for me and elevated it beyond whatever weaknesses it had in the storytelling.
>>
>>15550273

I assume you mean Dinobot II, but my memory of those episodes is that no-one even mentions the original Dinobot during those episodes. A quick look online says that he dies partially because he recovers the originals memories (which I had also forgotten), but that's not quite the same.
>>15561145

I can certainly understand that reason for distaste, but I suppose I must just rate story/plot over characterization. It probably helps that I wasn't too attached to the characters in Beast Wars in the first place though.
