Because Shadow was literally designed to be edgy, to not be like your normal "lame" superhero. He was gonna impress all the cool kids with his slick style, tough attitude and rad moves. Edgy as it's used on the internet now is a bastardization of how that kind of character was originally meant to appeal to kids and pre-teens by being rebellious and cool.
