I like Prime in general, but I just can't like it's characterization of either Optimus or Megatron. They're such lifeless characters, with no personality or traits beyond "leader", and I cannot for the life of me imagine what they could or would do when they're not on screen or when they have downtime. I can't imagine either even cracking a book (or computer file, whatever), playing a video game, playing basketball, training, anything. I always imagine that when they're not on screen they're just frozen as lifeless statues, with their mind set to pause until the camera hits them again. At least Bulkhead, Arcee, Knock Out and others were given personality and shown to enjoy things, from video games, to some kind of sport, to racing or just taking leisure drives; they smiled, made small talk, tried out new things and were generally interactive, dynamic and at least nomially interesting. Optimus and Megatron were just nothing.

That said, I do like Prime Megatron's backstory as a gladiator, though I'd assume it's one he's had in some other continuity regardless and I like his final revelation in that Beast Wars movie that finished the movie up. Him being dominated by some other entity for the movie and realizing how shitty it is and deciding to walk away from that is nice.

Animated I could at least imagine doing something because he barely appeared and spent most of the time he was on screen directly pursuing a greater plan that often took up the whole season of his appearances. He was never given great characterization or anything either, but I feel the brevity of his screen time made it forgivable and necessary.
