Thing about the original series is that I thought it went from boring to decent, but nothing special. That's about where Exodus is at the point I'm at. It's okay, but not what I'd call the current best of the decade. MJP beats it by a country mile on entertainment value alone

No, as good as Fafner is we got cheated out of an ending and therefore no one seriously can say it's the best anime mecha post 2010.
Once we have a fucking ending then it's time to reasses the whole show.

That's your opinion. If you rewatch the series you'll realize that everything was building up to the fact that shit wasn't going to work out.

From Soushi's narrations. To Ashoka's desperate attempt at forcing Miwa to being able to talk to Altair properly. To the almost total failure of the Exodus. To the constant string of choices made by NUNs and Human Forces groups that forced Orihime to use her final option. It'd be like saying DA was unfinished or HaE was unfinished.

Also you can't say this only applies to Fafner when MJP had a very similar sort of ending where the in series conflict was resolved but the overall conflict was not.

I just finished Exodus and I fail to see how things weren't resolved, other the the NUN still existing and the assumption that Altair wouldn't be able to bring the Festum to peace, which given the time skip showing that Kazuki is still alive, both seem to be non issues

Not either of them, but the indication that everyone will return to Tatsumiya "some day" is at least prime material for a sequel. And we're getting The Beyond, so that's fine.

The series does have a real tendency to leave things open though, I'm not sure we'll ever really see the end of the Festum conflict.
