For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Reposting from last thread:

Guy painting the GM green/brown here.
I'm considering doing the sniper rifle without the scope for reasons. Would I just need to putty the open part where the scope goes on order to seal it off and paint over that after appropriately sanding and etc.?

Also, I'm torn between painting it dark green to match my GM, painting it some sort of spray camo pattern, or painting it brown including the top gray piece to give it a sort of SKS vibe.

Since you aren't using the scope, have you considered using a different rifle or alternative equipment like a cannon or bazooka?

I think the cannon from the RX-79 Ground Gundam could pair well with the brown scheme.

I mean the RX-78 2 is the only RG I own but I diddnt find it too bad. The thrusters are fragile and the skirt armor can be a pain but honestly its not like its about to fly apart if you're careful posing. I worry more about the frame loosening up over time honestly

Yeah that one. Mine have a lot of nub marks even though I tried to remove them. Does the top coat make a huge difference ? I'm not used to all these things, I only build them and leave them as they are out of the box.

A Semi Clear topcoat won't make much of a difference, but a Flat Matt one should hide some of your nub marks. It's worth getting a panel liner just to make the lines of the kit pop out more too.

This was not a fun kit to paint, but I'm happy I did it because it was a challenge with the scale and complexity. Had to get every layer really really thin to make all of the parts still move properly, but not chip because everything moves for the transformation. I also got to use a few of the fun metal decals from samueldecal which are really cool but pretty flashy. I'll attempt transformation tomorrow (RIP).

Unless you get lucky on ebay or the like you would have to buy the kit to get it.

That can help in some instances, but the most important part is using strong paints that go on very thin. Every paint on this is a lacquer including the gloss so hopefully it won't chip at all. I will post any gore though.

Don't you hate losing a part? Espeically the super tiny ones.

I popped off the chest vulcans on my MG Ground Gundam to paint them silver. I painted the larger one just fine but the smaller one popped out of my tweezers and landed who knows where. It's so small and it sounded like it fell in my kitchen somewhere but I couldn't find it. I suspect if fell down the sink. Super pissed. I just painted around the peg hole for now to make it look like there's something there. I may re-create the piece using some spare runner, it may not be too hard. Still shit sucks.

The box fed guns that MS use is fine with me provided they aren't just a real gun x10.
>>
>>15523409
it makes sense that an artillery cannon would be used as a weapon system by a giant robot. if I had a giant space robot, i'd strap a rail gun to it too. These are kinds of weapons system that can be used by large vehicles, ships, mobile suits. They're in the same size category.

Technically the latter, but its not essential. Pretty sure that kits surface is made of a different material than normal kits and it's harder to remove mistakes from the surface.

Speaking of that rifle, why is the kit that comes with it such a piece of shit?

She can't hold it properly, pic related is the closest she can get to aiming with both arms.

Her arms are so bulky and short they can't do anything, the kit becomes 10x better by just taking the armor off of them.

Her ankle articulation is hindered by a blatantly retarded design that could have been easily fixed by just putting those armor bits on the front of her ankles on a simple joint and getting rid of all the unnecessary plastic behind them that stops the foot from moving forward.

All the pointy shit on her back makes the design look much worse, more expensive to make a kit of, and leaves tons of the inner frame exposed.

Are all Kotobukiya kits this shit?

The only other one I've gotten is a Zero who's shoulder snapped off the first time I tried to move it because the joint was absurdly tight.

It looks fine from that picture, but if you want better looking cameras and eyes, you can use a hobby knife to cut parts of sticker sheets(the shiny chrome looking kind) into the necessary shape, then color them with a marker and stick them on the kit, I assume translucent colored paint would be a better option than the marker, as long as it doesn't screw up the sticker by getting it too wet or something.

Basically it builds up to

>Most of the old good builders either leaving for /toy/'s threads, getting sick of /gpg/ because of spammers like Snapshit/the misnamed image spammer dude, or just leaving in general
>Newer builders are starting to get the hang of building/painting and asking the remaining good people what to do

Like in the last few threads I've seen a bunch of people saying they're starting to get airbrushes and learning how to properly topcoat, so people here might be finally coming out of their snap-fit shell.

Part of the reason why I started up Group Builds on here was to encourage guys to get a little more creative with their kits, but it might have an inverse effect since during the Graze group build I only recall about half the of the builds being shown in the thread (Either in a WIP or a finished state).
>>
>>15525637
>>15525675
When trying to encourage people to improve and have fun with the hobby, there's a fine line between constructive criticism and coddling.

I agree, though. It's a shame when good builds like the Zeta last thread don't get enough discussion.

>groupbuild wips not being shown in thread
I plan on busting out the airbrush Mon/Tues, I'll post some pics of my build then.

I've kind of been keeping my build close to the chest and not posting many pictures, but that's mainly because I don't know what I'm doing and I'm figuring everything out as I go.

>>15525509
Looks good enough for my money, mate. As long as you don't do any super closeups, it should look perfectly fine.
>>
>>15525704
>there's a fine line between constructive criticism and coddling.
That's the thing. People here ARE coddling most of the time. So many posts in this thread alone with people asking the most basic questions that are all of them answered in the guide (no one reads it anymore and that's what you get when we don't have the "read the guide" replies anymore).

I see snap builds with nub marks on them get posted and people then proceeding to tell the builder he did a good job. I mean come on, that is the lowest of standards.

Constructive criticism is indeed very much the way to go, because we SHOULD help people improve and that is the only way to do it. But that also means being strickter and harsher than we are being now. Because at this point we ARE coddling.

>>15525702
I commend your effort gbd, because you seem to have heart for the cause. I think the underlying problem is not that people here are afraid to post, but that they just can't be bothered.

I honestly think that if we hold ourselves and others to higher standards we will see an improvement in work and posts, because right now we are becoming the gutter of gunpla where all the newfags go to show their chinese plastic toys. I'm serious, go on reddit's gunpla page and you'll see some genuinely great kits being posted there. Apperantly those builders prefer posting it there instead of here.

Now I'm not going to pretend I'm a good builder. Most of the time when I post my work people don't even bother replying so apperantly it's nothing special. But I do put a lot of work in it. I learned to remove nubs, I learned to do panel lining, I learned to airbrush, I read the guide, I lurked and only when I thought my work was good enough did I end op posting it (got flayed ofcourse, because of "standards"). I can improve soo much more. But I put enough effort and time into my work that I have atleast earned the right to be anoyed at how low the bar has become.
>>
>>15525675
>>15525637
>Not knowing that the general on /m/ only became a continuous general with links and such when Build Fighters built interest in gunpla for a lot of newer people and was formed primarily by snapfitters and beginners who felt that the /toy/ thread was too elitist.
>>

Now I want to make a Samus custom from the GN-Archer. Perhaps the light suit from MP2
>>
>>15525803
I agree, but people need to commend and talk/ask questions about the really nice looking builds. It seems people want to encourage the newbies too much and are afraid to discourage them.

Honestly, I'm just tired of looking through the nubs to find the good aspects to criticize most builds. My first kit didn't have any nubs on it once I was finished with it. But maybe I'm just a perfectionist.

>only when I thought my work was good enough did I end op posting it
That's my boat, too.
>>
>>15525829
And? So what? Build Fighters introduced gunpla to a lot of /m/ fags, sure. Most likely they built one or two HGBFs too. But if they stay here and build more, I expect them to raise their fucking standards.

Toys or no, you're building and creating something, and the more you build, the more you're expected to improve.

Snapping an HG together with no paint, not even panel lining or even nub removal, pictured with a shitty low resolution phone camera with flash in shitty lighting is something I expect a complete beginner to do, not someone who has apparently been doing this for two years.
>>
>>15525829
So? Does that mean we just raise our shoulders and roll with the decline?

We can either roll over and die or try to make something out of it anon. If you are fine with just sitting back, then you are part of the problem.

The sub has a HUGE issue with getting dangerously close to a hugbox, and even with the higher amount of posts there you see a lot more truly awful builds. Over the years, I've noticed that for easy karma you just need to post the current popular kit with first in the title and BAM, you hit the top of the sub and are showered with praise no matter how bad the kit is.

And unlike here, where the mods don't exist and there's no ordering other than post date, reddit has votes that can really affect posts. So a decent chunk of the time when you point out problems with builds or areas they could improve, no matter how nice you are, the hivemind will downvote you because "Hey, we don't want to discourage them now!"

All in all I agree with you but ffs don't use somewhere worse than here as an example of something better.

It's a painted up AGE-2 Artemis, it's one of the first kits I painted kinda seriously like 4 years back, and I keep it around as a reminder of where I started from.

Good luck getting a hold of one now, however. It was a pack-in with one of the hobby magazines (Dengeki Hobby I think)

Yeah, it really does. There's also a bunch of places you can learn to pose, I know that there's a section in the guide for it, but if you want more I'm sure there's a bunch of youtube videos explaining it.

What I do is try to make the pose flow well, make sure that the rest of the model is reacting in some way to what its doing, swinging a sword, aiming a bazooka, etc. you'd be amazed at how much better bending a knee or moving a leg can make a pose look a lot more natural.

Have you ever been on a board that's not /m/ ? Because it seems like it isn't the case.
>>
>>15526453
The /toy/ general has been doing this a lot longer for the most part and as a result has gathered some higher level builders over time. The threads are also a good bit slower and less populated, meaning discussion topics and WIP stuff stays up longer. There is also a mod on /toy/ who usually looks in at least once a day and chased off the shit posting trips and as a result the general atmosphere of the threads is a lot more positive because most people there are just enjoying their hobby and not just there to shitpost and attentionwhore (for the most part). All around the /toy/ thread is a lot more laid back and chill than the /m/ thread.

This thread is better if you need a quick response to something, looking for news, group builds, and nice OP pics.

Here's a rundown on the ones I own

>Gaogaigar
Mini Galeon/Gaigar is pretty nice, Stealthgao is pretty much a single piece, Drillgao and Linergao are just kinda there. The combined form is pretty good asides from the connection from Gaigar and Drillgao for the legs being kinda loose (It's fine if you just leave him standing though, it just comes off if you pick him up).

>Goldymarg/StealthGao II
Goldymarg's a bit of a brick in tank/robot modes, but at that size there's not much you can do. Goldion Hammer is fine but a bit heavy on one side. Stealthgao II does it's job fine

>GekiRyuJin
FuRyu/RaiRyu are just as brick-like as Goldymarg but have less going for them since they've got huge backpacks thanks to the mixer/dump parts. Gekiryujin is good standalone but a bit of a partsformer.

>King J-Der
J-Der is a solid little mini-dude compared to the others, and King J-Der feels the most solid out of the three. I really need to give mine some detailing though since he's a bit of a big white blob OoB

>>
>>15526897

Oh yeah, for sure, I actually love the base color scheme.

The problem is I don't really know how to use my airbrush yet, and purple isn't a color I picked up when I was buying paints.

When I bought paint the hobby store was out of some common colors - black and white especially, though they had some off whites - so I got like medium blue and a red, and a light green. So I was trying to get a headstart on painting by trying to decide if I wanted to make it red or blue.

I was planning on using some purple on another kit, and if I got really desperate I could always mix my red and blue.

What gold is that?

Also, does anyone know what the curing time for the vallejo varnishes is?

They state 48 hours for model colour, but as their varnishes are polyurethane I guess they might have a different cuting time.
