>>
>>15515863
While I felt the same way, it's only mostly because FC and SC were the ones that introduced and warmed me up to all the characters first. The doors being random slice-of-life and/our backstory scenes for every character and setting only work in an epilogue game like this, where time doesn't need to be spent introducing characters or learning their dynamics with each other.

Comfy sibling adventure.
The entire game is just Estelle and Joshua doing odd jobs around the country. I found the pacing to be better than SC though. Sure it's slow, but there's no stupid padding like the four shadow towers in SC.

Also holy fuck I didn't expect Tita to be THE strongest physical character in 3rd

The Bracer Guild seems a bit stacked with A-Ranked Bracers in CS3, so it'll be interesting to see if the conflict between them and Osbourne blows up again. You have Sara with Fie, Agate and Tita, and Fast Arts Guy all muckin about Erebonia for one reason or another.

You say that like it's not normal for adult men to date women several years their junior. Once a guy gets past about 30 most of them are dating women 5+ years younger than them. By the time a guy's 60 his wife might be only 50 fairly often. There's even an old adage that the perfect age for a guy's girlfriend can be obtained by having their age and adding 7. So at 18 he would be dating a 16 year old, at 30 he would be dating a 22 year old and at 60 a 37 year old.

>>
>>15525320
No AT Delay, but the craft delay's stupidly short and you can literally buy yourself turns as long as you keep using it. This can mean no using items during an Ogre Slash chain, since item use actually takes more time, or you use it enough to get to Schera who can whip the party for AT Advance. Ogre Slash spam really lets you fuck with turn order, especially useful if you're trying to land on a crit or CP bonus.

A boss in Chapter 6 (the 3rd Guardian) is rather difficult until you get Richard to start spamming Ogre Slash after Zodiac and Clock Speed EX.

The absolute most broken combo. By the time the boss breaks through both of Kevin's Grail Sphere guards, all of Richard's turns give Kevin back enough CP to Grail Sphere again.
>>
What was the point of everyone but Rean graduating early when Rean already moonlights a military guy and graduated before 3 anyways?
>>
>>15521623

To be fair they could always pull a ME3 and just have them show up in cameos to show their doing important but none main story stuff and not have them in the party.

But then CS2 had such a big party in the epilogue including people that weren't even canocially there or fucking dead in one case, and this is on upgrade hardware, so maybe they really will have 30 something playable characters.
>>
So since CS1 had mech battles only at the very end, but they became a regular thing in 2, and 2 had more than one mech in your party only at the very end, does that mean it will also become a regular thing in 3?

What ever happens to Ordine anyway? Did it die with Crow or can it be restored with a new pilot?

Someone explain this franchise to me

So Trails and Cold Steel are two different things? Does each series have its own storyline progression? Do they overlap? Or is it like Final Fantasy where each entry is 'we made up some new characters doing the same shit again'?
>>
>>15528028
>So Trails and Cold Steel are two different things?

Different countries, same world. Kind of like Suikoden but with a far more autistic attention to detail.

>Does each series have its own storyline progression? Do they overlap?

Yes. Also yes.

>Or is it like Final Fantasy where each entry is 'we made up some new characters doing the same shit again'?

No.
>>
>>15528028
It's a long running series. Each country have their own story but everything is connected to each other.
Release order:
1. Trails in The Sky (Liberl)
2. Trails in The Sky SC
3. Trails in The Sky 3rd
4. Trails of Zero (Crossbell)
5. Trails of Azure
6. Trails of Cold Steel (Erebonia)
7. Trails of Cold Steel II
>>
>>15528028
Trails in the Sky, Trails to Zero/Azure, and Trails of Coldsteel are like Gundam 0079, Zeta Gundam, and Gundam Unicorn.
>>
Finally finished Trails of Kevin. It really is a fanservice game through and through. Dunno why people complained about the game being a grindfest when you can just move from bosses to bosses without fighting much mooks since everyone is broken as fuck. The final dungeon even is kind enough to give you strong equipment for everyone.

Overall though, it feels more like an Ys game with turn-based battle. Maybe because it's a dungeon crawler and has less NPC? The OST, espescially this, sounds like it came from Origin too.

I tried to minimize random battles as well, but ended up being 100ish wins short for the door that required 400 wins. Made for a somewhat unpleasant momentum killing grind at the end. Besides that though, I agree that the game really didn't feel like a terrible grindfest like most people prior to translation made it out to be.

>>
>>15528722
I just explore The Abyss with my favorite characters and then spread them out for the final dungeon.

Final boss is a fucking joke. If you give Kevin a gladiator belt you will never ever got hit because the pillar refilled Kevin's CP by themselves.

I wonder if the people who played the game early are blind EOPs or just autistic.
>>
>>15528641
>It really is a fanservice game through and through.
I'm on chapter three and that sounds about right. Game comes across as pure filler.
>>
>>15529184
Well, not quite. It sets up a lot of things that happen in Zero/Ao and Cold Steel with the Star Doors and I quite like the main story truth be told. But it still is more or less a fandisc expansion pack.
>>
>>15529473
>It sets up a lot of things that happen in Zero/Ao and Cold Steel
Okay, but I could just play those games to find out what's going on in those places. I don't need to be told thing is going to happen when I could experience it first hand. 3rd is essentially Sequel Bait: The Game.
>>
>>15529533
3rd contextualizes a lot of the events in those games which just seem kind of random without knowledge of 3rd.
>>
>>15528122
This doesn't begin to scratch the surface.
Trails in the Sky is also Legend of Heroes 6. But so is SC and 3rd, just to fuck with you further.

Zero and Azure are Legend of Heroes 7, Cold Steel dropped the main series numbering.

So yeah, there are 5 games in the series before Trails in the Sky, but they are not in the same continuity. They still deserve mention.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Heroes
>>
>>15530195
If we're going further, Legend of Heroes is a spin-off of Dragon Slayer which is a spin-off of Xanadu.

Maybe Falcom thought nobody will buy your games if it doesn't have any previous rep.

If you played the Sora series already you should have a pretty good idea of what to expect, with the first game being a slow world building focused game with PLOT at the last minute, and the second game being PLOT all the time.

And nah, the identity of those two isn't a groundbreaking revelation or anything. That said, there are some neato twists, so you might not want to stick around the thread and just go play the game instead.

>>15531042
>and the second game being PLOT all the time
Either you didn't play SC, or I played an entirely different SC than you did. Plot in that game was largely relegated to the last few chapters. Most of the game is Estelles bracer romp through Liberl Mk II.
>>
>>15536743
To be fair, at least you have a defined objective in mind for the first half of SC. It's still essentially filler, but much less directionless than the first half of FC.
>>
Why is Rean's life so unfair compared to almost every other Trails MC?

His happy school fun time was ruined forever, Crow died and Osborne won making most of his actions pointless, and while he did get a cool robot and be a national hero, he didn't actually want any of that.

Is he the Tatsuya of Trails?
>>
>>15535770

This may sound like a silly question, but does anybody happen to know if the in-game books, such as Carnelia, Red Moon Rose, Gambler Jack, or the Doll Knight exist in PDF or ePub format to read outside of the game itself?

Will these three heal Rean?
>>
>>15540025

I don't think Rean can be healed anymore. The moments passed and he can never be that same guy again. Crow's dead and he didn't get to graduate with his pals. Instead he seemingly graduated alone and miserable.

If anything him insisting on staying at a school (admittedly as a instructor) rather than taking his place in the world is him still stuck half living in the past.
>>
>>15540111
But Rean just has a fetish for school girls and teachers.
>>
>>15540025
Nah, it will be Blue Jusis who heals Rean and teaches him to believe in himself again!

>>15540111
Rean is a simple man with simple needs, he just want cute girls to headpat and to go on trips on a train.
>>
Oh baby, wasn't expecting the Vita TV to work.
>>
>>15540626

Now that he actually is a teacher and is almost 20 that would be inappropriate. Well for the kids anyway. That's why trying to romance Sara gets her saying she'll rock his world, but only when he's older and not her student anymore.

Although admittedly he's a bad teacher already seeing as he apparantly is taking them on field trips himself and doing all the heavy lifting for them, which again his own teacher was specifically not trying to do that until they ended up in a serious Civil War.

Or it's just because his new class 7 seemingly consists of 3 people so far.
>>

Wasn't expecting there to be DLC for the original tracks. Now the question is which?

If you know Japanese, the Windows versions are. Kiseki has a lot of little references to the Gagharv trilogy. If you don't and you're playing the PSP versions, eh. Maybe? The translation isn't very good in them and they replaced the battle system with something much slower and more boring for some reason. If you can deal with that and do a bit of mental gymnastics to figure out what the characters are actually saying then I'd say go for it.

Just remember that the localized PSP versions fucked up the ordering. Moonlight Witch is Legend of Heroes III, Tear of Vermillion is Legend of Heroes IV and Song of the Ocean is Legend of Heroes V. The localized numbering for some reason has Tear of Vermillion as Legend of Heroes I, Moonlight Witch as Legend of Heroes II and Song of the Ocean as Legend of Heroes III. So play it in the original order of Witch > Vermillion > Ocean.

I'm betting on Angelica myself. Both because she has that scene where she pilots the grunt and somehow kicks everyone's ass even though she'd never piloted a mech before, and also just because she keeps showing up yet has such a minor prescence in both games that they must be holding out something for her.

I think Rean just tried so hard so not repeat the mistakes he saw everyone doing that he sacrificed his own happiness for it.

Crow tells him not to compromise his own beliefs just for the sake of making his life eaiser, which is why he doesn't join the Nobel Alliance just for the sake of being with Crow again and swiftly ending the war so he can go back to happy school times.

At the same time he seems like he doesn't want to become too attached to his past happiness like the Liberation Front did, since because they all had their hate on for Osborne because of stuff that happened years ago they ended up making things worse for everyone, getting all but one of them killed, and in their short sightedness only made Osborne stronger in the end while they got nothing.

Hence he's almost too eager to encourage everyone to leave and not go back for a second year of Class 7, even though many of them offer him other options, I guess to prove to himself that he can move on and roll with life's punches unlike Crow.
>>

Rean's just self sacrificing to a fault, to the point where several characters in story mention numerous times there's something seriously wrong with him and it's said he actually has no self preservation instinct and his natural reaction is to save someone, anyone else first, even if it's just some random person he doesn't know.

They keep telling him to get over it and he admits there's a problem himself but it still ends with him being easily guilt tripped into winning a war for a guy he hates and driving all his friends away, leaving for what was apparantly a very lonely and depressed second year at Thors.

I'm hoping something finally comes of this in 3 since it's had 2 games of build up.

It doesn't help that he went to Thors in the first place because he was looking for his place in the world, yet only showed interest in going on trips and head patting his friends, and when he finally found his place as the Ashen Knight he is uncomfortable with the fame, wants as little to do with it as possible and took the job that would involve using his position the least.

Though I can only name two specific examples off the top of my head (Eiji from Kamen Rider OOO and Shirou Emiya) this feels like it's more common than it should be in Japanese entertainment.

To be honest, I feel Rean will always have those doubts about himself until he learns about what happened to his him in the past and where his Ogre stuff comes from.

I knew it was unlikely and probably out of character, but part of me was hoping rean would embrace his new position and go full nuclear, becoming an erebonian Darth Vader while working from behind the scenes to make the war as bloodless as possible, then coming home a jaded war veteran. I don't know if the tone of the series would allow that, though.

Ah, ok. I guess I was thrown off by how little time relatively passed for two wars to have happened. Somewhat unrelated, but cold steel 2 really shrunk the world and made erebonia feel tiny, especially with the entire civil war happening over the course of around two months. >>
>>15554996
That's kind of sad when you think about it. Rean's new friends are all spies, people who hate him and Towa. While his real friends left him to do whatever.
>>
>>15555073
To be fair, it was Rean who kept saying "go do whatever you want and don't be shackled because of me". He's just passing on what Crow taught him at Pantagruel.
>>
>>15555149

I feel like he learned the wrong lesson from that though. Crow was satisfied where he was and had Vita and the rest of his letter only crew to back him up. Also Crow's choice got him fucking killed afterwhich it was revealed Osborne played him like a fiddle and his entire life was a pointless waste.

Rean drove all his friends away even though most of them didn't actually want to go, and was miserable and lonely at a time when he needed serious emotional help and nobody was there for him. It doesn't help that he's gimping his own future out of fear of Osborne using Valimar.

Which goes to Rean having serious self worth issues and not caring about himself. If he doesn't shape up he's end up with a hole punched through his chest just like Crow.
>>
>>15555073

I find it ironic that Towa was the only one of Rean's friends who was going to leave regardless since she was graduating on schedule, yet she was the only one that came back for him.
>>
>>15555073
If Sen 3 actually going with Rean betrayed by everyone, that would be hard for me to swallow. Arc Rise Fantasia did this, and Tales of Abyss kinda did this. I like Rean and wish him the best.
>>
>>15555073

At least Rean has good old Patrick to keep him company.
>>
>>15553828

I just want him to show some fucking resentment about the unfairness of everything. He doesn't have to act on it (indeed the whole point of tragedy of Crow was he let that control his destiny and that ruined him and killed him the end) but god damn it get pissed about it regardless.

When characters just don't seem to care life constantly shitting on them they seem poorly written or inhuman. Rean didn't get what he wanted in the end and he should be pissed about that.
>>
Man if you really think about it, how Ao ends pretty much spoils anything CS related since you already know that Crossbell will be free 2 years later. Sure it's supposed to make you feel better for the Crossbell citizens but c'mon.

Then you have the Erebonia arc where barely anything happens till the last hour with ILF then CS2 has you at the peaceful Eastern Erebonia with barely any action during the Civil War with the knowledge that you already know that Crossbell will be free after the invasion.
>>
>>15553828
>Rean and Claire run around Crossbell with Millium and Altina, acting like their parents while doing nuclear things
>>
>>15554996

Actually Altina only recently started hanging with him again according to the info. She spent the year between games with Millium and Claire doing Ironblood things while Rean did his second year of Thor's with only the NPCs for company. She didn't graduate Thors with him. That's why she's a "student" at the new Thors while Rean's a teacher.

So Altina's still kind of a stranger to him at this point. In fact it's weird that Osbourne sends her to hang out with Rean rather than Claire or Millium

Man, Crow delivering Rean's final head pat will hurt Rean for the rest of his life.

I don't think so. He has basically three voices. His standard Kyon/Gintoki one, his Beethoven one which is just the Gintoki voice hitting deeper notes all the time and his Drang voice (Granblue), which is just the Gintoki voice but attempting to sound easy going all the time and slightly higher. The problem with these variations is that they clearly limit his range compared to his main one. The Drang voice for example never sounds like it's really that serious.
>>
>>15560666
Let's hope for the best.
He has experience voicing Jack, Depp, Bathhouse owner, and Hopper after all.
>>
I started playing TitS FC yesterday (currently still in the Prologue) and while I'm loving it so far, there's two things I need to ask:

First, for some reason I picked the hard difficulty. Was this a mistake? The enemies hit hard as fuck, those red beetles in the first few areas are brutal and goddamn I tried opening a chest and some monsters simply appeared and destroyed me. Will the difficulty scale a little better later on? I'm still relatively early into the game, so if I'm better off restarting I won't mind doing it.

And as for the other one, should I bother getting 100%? I don't see me playing thru a 50~ hour game twice, so I'd like to get it all in one go, but that may be difficult without a guide. I'm just wary that following a guide (even if it has no spoilers) and the constant search for all the things I need to find and etc may take out the fun of the game for me.

>>
>>15566386
I think I read somewhere that an Arteria arc was gonna follow Calvard.
>>
>>15566411
Arteria is even smaller than Crossbell. It's literally just Vatican City. I'm not sure it would work. They could literally throw it in Calvard.
>>
>>15566386
Why would it end there? Isn't kiseki only like 60% done or something
>>
>>15566386
There's still other stuff like Remiferia, North Ambria, and maybe even Leman State.
>>
>>15566478
>>15566467
That would mean by the time Calvard arc's done, we'd have it maybe at 80% done since Akatsuki's also a thing (and we're missing that storyline) so by the time Arteria arc happens, we'd be at the endgame.
>>
>>15566488
Akatsuki is not canon nor is it part of that.
>>
>>15566496
Akatsuki is definitely canon. At least the story parts are. Probably not the gatcha parts.

>>15566484
Remiferia is heavily done in Akatsuki, so probably not. North Ambria has a high chance of being done in CSIII, what with it being annexed by Erebonia and Barkhorn being in the plot. Leman, maybe. They could do Leman and Arteria at the same time, I guess.

>>15566488
Calvard will probably be three games. When they said 60% there had been seven games. Cold Steel III + three Calvard games is already getting close to 40%-ish, give or take one game.
>>
Would 3rd have been better if the doors were all mandatory?
>>
>>15568579
Anyone who plays 3rd without getting all the doors is probably someone who isn't enjoying the series the right way.
>>
>>15568612
C'mon, that's like saying "anyone who plays Cold Steel without doing all the bonding events is probably someone who isn't enjoying the series the right way."
>>
>>15569184
The two aren't really comparable. I'd compare it to someone just going to end their free day without spending all their bonding points.
>>
>>15569184
Not really. The doors are the 3rd's version of sidequests and it's more akin to skipping every sidequest. Whereas with the bonding events, it is impossible to see them all on your first playthrough anyway because you'll never have enough bonding points until you've beaten the game at least once. Which I suppose is where Cheat Engine in the upcoming PC ports of Cold Steel comes in useful.

Seriously I don't get what the morality of Cold Steel is supposed to be. Is the dude a bad guy or not.

It seems like he's basically an evil emperor in the making, yet the moral of the story seems to be to sit back and let him do his thing, and if you get fucked over by his policy to just suck up and deal with it because otherwise you're supporting the oppressive nobility.

I mean the Imperial Liberation Front all had legit greivances with the man, yet by opposing him all they did was make things worse for everyone and eventually all get themselves (except Scarlet) killed pointlessly while making him even stronger, and the story preaches that they were in the wrong for doing so.

Meanwhile thanks to him the protagonist's all got massive rewards out of it for sticking to the plan of not helping the nobles.

So I'm just kind of scratching my head at what exactly the moral of the story is here?

And assuming CS3 finally makes him the bad guy to get defeated why is it only ok now to kill him, but not when Crow and friends were doing it?
>>
>>15569810
It seems you are missing the point. ILF just want to kill Osborne and has no attachment to Erebonia in general. But, C grown too attached to his friend during his time lurking in Cedric and that's why CS2 happened.
>>
>>15569844

So you have to want to kill Osborne while still loving the country and supporting the downfall of nobility so long as Osborne isn't running things?
>>
>>15569856
You're not supposed to believe anything in particular. There's no perfect solution to Erebonia's problems. Support the Noble Faction and you let a corrupt, declining aristocracy step all over you while also opening up opportunities for Ouroboros to do all sorts of nasty shit in your country. Support Osborne and you let a ruthless expansionist cause tons of problems around the Empire's borders and make your neighbors hate you more by the minute. However, the catch with Osborne is that he supports many popular reforms that empower a lot of commoners in Erebonia. Granted, some of these reforms greatly disenfranchise certain people, but they do make him seem like the lesser of two evils overall.

So where do Rean and the gang fit into all of this? Well, their idea of a third alternative was to support the royal family before anyone else. After all, Eugent III was a popular emperor and the group had close ties to Olivert and Alfin, so they figured if they went around helping war victims and the imperial army, they could gain enough public support to mediate the two sides of the war and end it.

Unfortunately, Osborne played everyone like a fiddle. He was prepared for CS1's late-game events MONTHS beforehand. He was prepared for his assassination, he knew a civil war would break out, and he knew Class VII would likely play a major role in trying to end it. He planted an Ironblood member in each faction in the war - Millium in Rean's party, Claire in the imperial army, Rufus in the Noble Alliance - while having Lechter do intel work in the background. He took control of one of the Thirteen Factories and had Altina work as another double agent, keeping Elise and the royal family in safe custody under the guise of being held by the Noble Alliance. Rean's team, the Noble Alliance, Ouroboros, and the imperial army all ended up playing into Osborne's hand.

The catch to this, however, is that Crossbell becomes independent again in 1206, so it's up to CS3 to deliver.
>>
>>15570015

Sounds like Rean and co are fucked no matter what in the end, unless they embrace their new Osborne overlord, which Rean seems to be adamantly refusing to do.

Or he just abandon's Erebonia and goes to live in the country's that don't suck.
>>
>>15570015

The one thing I didn't get is why everyone just meekly obeys Osborne when he shows up again.

Rean looks like he's about to go off on him, but then just decides to be his city conqueror instead.

He did jack shit, why do they just hand the country back to him because he shows up all of sudden? They're the ones with the battleship, robot and tons of public and noble support.
>>
>>15570113
>The one thing I didn't get is why everyone just meekly obeys Osborne when he shows up again.
Oh, I don't know... maybe because he's the most powerful man in Erebonia and his four closest subordinates are in the room?

>>15570113
>Rean looks like he's about to go off on him, but then just decides to be his city conqueror instead.
Probably cause he realizes that it's pointless? If he actually tried to raise a hand against him, Rufus would have gutted in his ass in no time. Even a fucking retard like Rean knows his limits. And if you're asking "why don't the Ironbloods just betray him?", I'd say it's because they have plenty of trust and loyalty for him from their years of service.

>He did jack shit, why do they just hand the country back to him because he shows up all of sudden?
This is such a retarded statement, I'm not even gonna respond to it.

>They're the ones with the battleship, robot and tons of public and noble support.
He has all those and then some. They're outmatched by a long shot. Remember, he was actually alive this whole time. I seriously doubt he sat on his ass and twiddled his thumbs while a civil war was going on.
>>

>>
>>15570157

It is kind of shitty that everyone lets this blantantly evil dude have his way with all of them.

Rean's solution is just to apparantly hide at school as long as possible, and then become a teacher when he finally graduates, and keep his finger's crossed that he won't bother him anymore.

And everyone else just seems to go about their business. Nobody at the end of CS2 seems to have any interest in making any further plans to stop him. Just going about their lives and hoping he doesn't ruin them too much.

I've never played two whole games and felt like I accomplished absolutely nothing like this before.
>>
>>15570113
Duke Albarea was in jail

Duke Cayenne was in custody

The noble alliance had their heads chopped off by Class VII, Osborne was back to take control of the imperial military, the tides of the war had turned. It was over at that point.
>>
How strong is Valimar? Could Rean fight someone like Victor or Cassius with it?
>>
>>15570277
Oh and to add on to that, their great hero Rufus Albarea was a turncoat who supported Osborne all along.

The noble alliance was finished
>>

On foot? Yeah it's implied he could even take McBurn if he just summoned Valimar and tried to turn him into a smear on the ground.

However this isn't an efficient use of it's power and he can't use it constantly as he runs out of mana, which is bad if there are other robots to fight.

Osborne is just too good.
Too show how strong he is, just look at the amount enemy he has. He is, basically, hated by everyone.
By Liberl, by Crossbell, by Calvard, by his annexed countries, even from inside of Erebonia.
He also hated by both Noble and reformist.
Bracers hate him, Ouroboros hate him.
He even prepared himself if one of his ironbloods betrayed him.
He has no actual allies except his Ironbloods. Hell in the 3rd he even prepared himself if Ironbloods betrayed him too.
The scariest part of Osborne is, we don't know what is his plan yet. What did he do, what do he want to do, what will he do next.
Even Ouroboros, the supposed "big bad guys", has a goal, which is to complete their Orpheus plan.
>>
>>15570301

The worst part about characters like this is when they do finally lose it typically seems like an asspull.
>>
>>15570276
>It is kind of shitty that everyone lets this blantantly evil dude have his way with all of them.
He's not entirely evil, though. He passed a number of reforms that helped commoners move up in Erebonian society. He helped industrialize the country with railways and other infrastructure. Osborne is an egomaniacal asshole, sure, but he's managed to do a lot of good in the Empire regardless, and all of those good things have made him quite popular.

>And everyone else just seems to go about their business. Nobody at the end of CS2 seems to have any interest in making any further plans to stop him. Just going about their lives and hoping he doesn't ruin them too much.
The country was recovering from a civil war, man. What the fuck were they gonna do, start another to try and oust Osborne? Especially after they basically helped him secure more power and popularity than ever before?

>>
>>15570368
>He also fucked over Crow and all the other people in his group. Then got them all pointlessly killed by playing dead.
They definitely had good reasons to hate Osborne, but turning to terrorism and instigating a civil war kind of got them what was coming. Crow's case in particular has some bitter irony. Despite all the bad things Osborne initially did in Jurai, the town ended up prospering in the end; albeit at the cost of Crow's and his grandpa's livelihoods. Most people in the empire don't know what happens behind the scenes and/or don't give a shit because it doesn't affect them. Most Erebonians see Osborne as this strong, populist leader working to help the common man and defend Erebonia against her enemies. All the good things he's done for the empire only serve to reinforce his good reputation.
>>
>>15570455

Again though, what about the few people that get their livelihoods destroyed? What are they supposed to do about it. Just roll over and let their lives be ruined while thinking it's fair so long as the nation is improving?"

>Again though, what about the few people that get their livelihoods destroyed? What are they supposed to do about it. Just roll over and let their lives be ruined while thinking it's fair so long as the nation is improving?"
I dunno. Ask the Septian Church for help? That's kind of a philosophical question rather one related to Trails and its story.
>>
>>15570157

While I got that they were basically helpless to do anything but let him have his way, I wish they didn't just roll with it so easily. At least show some rage over that, or hell rage over any of the shit all the Noble Alliance puts them all through. Rufus for tricking them? Nothing? They're all fine being played like chumps with a smile?

Rean is pissy to Crow for like a minute, but quickly is all about being his buddy and bringing him back, at no point telling him fuck you asshole all this is your fault, we could have still be having happy school time now if it wasn't for you.

Rean even feels bad when Vulcan dies. Fuck him, he ruined your schooltime, hate the bastard.

It really bugs me when nobody shows the proper resentment they should in these things. If you have to suck it because it's the only path fair enough, but at least be angry about having to do it.

>>15570801

>>
>>15570801
I guess Falcom just wanted to maintain a sense of levity and heroic optimism given the Cold Steel series' overall tone and aesthetic. A series full of characters with pretty hair and designer outfits isn't exactly the optimal look for a gritty war story filled with anger and melodrama. I dunno, I don't like it either. After playing Trails in the Sky 3rd, I'm convinced that the Sky trilogy had better writing. That's not to say Cold Steel doesn't have its moments, but it's not on the same level.

>>15570801
>Rean is pissy to Crow for like a minute, but quickly is all about being his buddy and bringing him back, at no point telling him fuck you asshole all this is your fault, we could have still be having happy school time now if it wasn't for you.
>Rean even feels bad when Vulcan dies. Fuck him, he ruined your schooltime, hate the bastard.
Rean is just a shitty protagonist in terms of writing and execution. The dude spends like 70% of the first game being Class VII's guidance counselor, then spends the rest of the series trying convince a wanted terrorist to come back to school. He's just generic friendly but self-conscious protagonist who goes out of his way to solve other people's problems because he doesn't have much going for him... well, until he gets super powers, a mech, and turns out to be Osborne's biological son, because you know, why write an actually interesting protagonist when you can jump the shark?
>>
>>15570940
>Rean is just a shitty protagonist in terms of writing and execution.

Lloyd is worse. He's everything people bitch about with Rean, except he has no conflict at all. The Lloyd you saw during the Divertessment? He's exactly the same the second he shows up in Zero no Kiseki.
>>
>>15571224
desu Lloyd seemed comically bad in CS2. Some of his lines were like if someone sat down and thought "what are the most cliche things a saturday morning cartoon protagonist could possibly say?" and then stuck his answers into the script.
>>
>>15571224
Rean's unjustified self-doubt and self-conflict is literally the worst part of his character. The cheesy friendship protagonist shit is just icing on top of the shit cake. If Lloyd is Rean without conflict, that would automatically make him a less shitty character.
>>
>>15571391
I disagree. Divertissment and Epilogue Rean is way better than Lloyd ever got.
>>
>>15571316
That's why I don't like his role in CS2. I liked how he progressed from Zero to Ao, then he like devolved in CS2

> Rean is just a shitty protagonist in terms of writing and execution. The dude spends like 70% of the first game being Class VII's guidance counselor, then spends the rest of the series trying convince a wanted terrorist to come back to school

You're right but it's not just Rean. Literally everyone Class 7, Sara and the other class people manning the ship, are insanely forgiving and not at all resent to these people that upended their lives. Instead they all seem angry at the guys hurting the little people in the crossfire, even though they'd not ever be able to do this if Oroborous and the ILF didn't give them the chance.

The only one that actually seems to hate Crow and give the Noble Alliance the scorn it deserves is Claire, which is doubly confusing because it honestly doesn't affect her life much at all. She had her school fun and would be fighting the Empire's enemies regardless because that's her job.

>and turns out to be Osborne's biological son

I'm still not sure how I feel about that.

Quite honestly it makes the crux of his self worth issue, that he's not a noble by blood, and therefore causes undue distress to his loving family as a result (even if the Schwartzer's personally don't care he did hurt his father's standing in the eyes of his peers), effectively solved. He is a noble by blood now (Osbourne is a noble, even if he's a new one that was bestowed the title due to his actions) and thus can feel comfortable about it.

The question is how he can handle it. He can either finally chill out about himself and stop with the self hate, or he can double back on it while also hating Osborne even more because all this time it was unnecessery hate he could have avoided if Osbourne had just told him early on.
>>
>>15570455
>Crow's case in particular has some bitter irony. Despite all the bad things Osborne initially did in Jurai, the town ended up prospering in the end; albeit at the cost of Crow's and his grandpa's livelihoods.

That's the weird thing with Osborne. He's obsessed with equalizing and modernising the place, and while it works alot of his opposition is people that are in love with the old noble and common worker system and don't want that to change.

And while it makes sense that nobles don't want to lose their power, alot of the liberation front are commoners that lost their peasant lives as a result. But here's the thing, they weren't forced into nothing. Crow and Scarlet's families were paid handsomely to lose their land, yet both families imploded because they were so content and attached to their generations upon generations of peasant lives there that they didn't know what to do without it.

Scarlet herself says her family was set for live and could have done anything, but just drank until they died because they didn't know what to do other than their farming gig.

It's interesting. Usually the motivation for stuff like that isn't "You took away my back breaking labor in the sun all day. how dare you"
>>
>>15573096
I guess one of the major themes in Cold Steel is generally being lost with what to do with yourself. Like, it seems a lot of the characters in CS just honestly didn't seem to know what to do with themselves after their goals were done. In a sense, I think that's part of the reason why Rean kind of just threw everyone off in Class VII in the end, because he didn't want to bother them since they all had their own purposes and goals, but Rean himself had no clue on what he wanted to do. In the end, he just ends up being an errand monkey for Osborne.
>>
>>15571316

It's probably because Lloyd's supposed to be the generically heroic character there.

For all Rean's cheesy speeches he turned out to be no better than Crow in the end, using his Knight and power to oppress people for his own selfish reasons.
>>
>>15573124

He only did that once. After that he just kind of went through the motions of Thor's, only miserable and alone and for no reason because he could have easily gotten the early graduate treatment with everyone else, but stupidly choose not to.

Then when he can't be a student any longer he decides to become a teacher, seemingly just to keep being able to stay at Thors, even though he could walk any path he chose but his self worth is so low he just wants to do other's bidding and be left behind (yet won't become a Bracer either)

I mean I think I get what his endgame will be, which is serving whoever takes over Erebonia after Osborne finally gets kicked out, but still it's kind of frustrating for the main PC to be so against bettering himself.
>>
>>15573136
He chose not to mostly out to I think mostly because he honestly had no idea what he really wanted at that point. Like if he quit Thor's, what then? He stuck with Thor's, despite being miserable and alone, probably because it was a familiar and comfortable place for him, a safe haven of sorts. Like one of his big issues is that he doesn't try to pick out his own path because he's just lost as hell. Like part of the reason why he sticks with Thors so much I think is because it was one of the few times when he actually felt like he knew where he was going and what he was doing.

The whole graduate with Crow thing is pretty irrational, but when you look at it, it's one of the few times Rean actually decided he wanted to do something for himself. It was one of those times in which he had a clear set goal and desire to win. Then it turns out he was all part of Osborne's plan to seize power, and he becomes lost again because all that shit he thought he really wanted to do was just a path someone set out for him. Which sets him again down to his funk because in the end, he has no idea on really what he wants and even if he does pick something, what happens if it's just controlled by someone else?
>>
>>15573156
>Then it turns out he was all part of Osborne's plan to seize power, and he becomes lost again because all that shit he thought he really wanted to do was just a path someone set out for him

Did Osborne ever intend for Rean to get a Gundam and unlock his power and become his personal asskicker? I always figured that was a happy accident, and his real plan was for Rufus to take down the Noble Alliance from within.

Did he even know about the Knights at all?
>>
>>15573259
Probably not. All that stuff was probably just a happy accident. Osborne probably had just intended for Rean to stay safe in Ymir. Everything after the assassination was Osborne's plan though.

Rean is just wasting his potential.

As Osbourne's son and strongest asset he could have been in the perfect position to both temper his actions and force him to establish a system to take care of the ones that get screwed by them to prevent people like Crow from happening again.

Osbourne would have no choice but to consider Rean's opinions, since he would be an irreplacible warrior he can't not have happy if he wants him to help him take places over. Plus Rean is his son, and if the flashback is any indication, does care for him somewhat.

Instead he's stubbornly trying to live in the past and avoid his problems, while letting Osbourne run around unchecked.

For all of Rean's cheesiness and generic hero speeches I was impressed how he's able to keep himself in check when he's on the Noble Alliances ship. He politely listens to their whole blatantly false speech on their attempt to recruit him, without just defaulting no "You guys are evil and the means aren't just ragh ragh ragh" immediately like most mecha protagonists would in that situation, and even geniunely debates the pros and cons of helping them, instead of just rejecting everything they do out of principle.
