Hiraiface is annoying, but it's certainly not the worst thing in the world. There are other shows that look far uglier, such as

Zambot 3, which occasionally looks like it was drawn via crayon scribbles

Zoids and Cyber Adventure Webdiver, both of which have ridiculous character designs, hideous early CG (particularly with the latter; the former is at least cel-shaded) and practically no fight scene animation at all

Macross Zero, which again uses early CG, but this time in a more realistic show, failing horribly at integrating the two

Transformers G1, which was so full of inconsistent character design and animation errors that one could practically write a book about it

Bubuki Buranki is probably my favourite /m/ show in ages.
I loved how it felt both fresh and classic at the same time. And it had an interesting setting with likeable characters. And great designs for the mechs.
