Yes, it's a cockpit.

In episode 13 of ZZ, Mondo and Beecha stow away in that cockpit as part of a botched plan to steal the ZZ Gundam and give it to Axis Zeon. Their plans are foiled when Judau himself steals the ZZ Gundam to go out and look for and fight for his sister. During the middle of battle the two get spooked, so Beecha forces the ZZ to transform, thinking that they'll escape with the ZZ's core top section.

Gotton fires on the disassembled ZZ Gundam, causing the front cockpit section of the ZZ core top to break off, and Beecha and Mondo end up drifting into and getting stuck on the Endra.

That's just the cockpit hatch, I'm sure. In that episode, the red piece you speak of is the part that Gotton broke through with a beam cannon.

When the scene cuts to Beecha and Mondo screaming for their lives, it zooms out from the frontal blue piece which got stuck on the Endra, which implies that the cockpit that the two are sitting in is in that part.

I love the ZZ, but that design coming after the Z always felt a little weird. The ZZ is too blocky. It's like the designers felt that the Z was too different and wanted to go back to basics. They could have done 'big and powerful' to contrast Z's 'light and agile' without getting rid of Z's general sleekness and curves.

I think you need to chill out just a bit. Personally I agree. ZZ kicks ass and takes names. yeah its a flawed design but that is actually talked about in show and over time it is improved upon. Maybe I'm just biased because Judau and this baby were absolute monsters in SRW V so I'm willing to give the design some credit because watching him chew through invaders like they're nothing is awesome.
on the face design, I'm not sure I can agree, it isn't THE coolest, but it is pretty rad regardless.
Also seeing the ZZ appear for the first time is still one of the coolest moments, if only because of that scene where even Judau seems to be overwhelmed by the sheer power the thing seems to be giving off.
