It looks like the proportions of his designs are slowly reverting to the L-gaim MK II based stuff he did for the majority of FSS.
Problem is, that just puts them in a really awkward place where they don't look as bizarre as Gothic Made stuff, but not as sleek as FSS stuff. They just kind of look complex for the hell of it now.

My genuine belief is he came to the conclusion that he pretty much refined that design style he pioneered with the L-gaim MK II, and doesn't think he can really take it much further without making more mecha that look the same.
So he decided to try a brand new design scheme. But it looks like he focused a bit too much of making it look unlike any existing mecha, and not enough on creating a coherent, appealing design. I think the first thought most people have when they see the Gothic Made designs is "How on earth would that thing even move?" and the actual answer ended up being fairly disappointing too.

This is the strangest complaint I've seen about the GTMs because they have more articulation than all the Mortar Headds ever made. Having endless giant protrusions sticking out of the body has never been a problem for Mortar Headds to begin with.

I haven't read the manga up to the whole gothic made deal (I assume it's not even available in english to that point).
Are the new designs supposed to be complete retcons, or are they supposed to be the next step in technological progression? Or is it some deliberately ambiguous blur between the two like Endless Waltz?

The added joints actually make it a bit more confusing. People have to spend a few moments visualizing how those extra elbows would come into play during combat for example. Or what kind of movement the new abdomens are capable of. All those joints make it look like it could have snake-like movements, but the existing animation models just depict them as teleporting statues.

Yes (technically). Led mirage appeared in the first chapter of the manga, way before KOG.

Chronologically no. KOG was created by Sopp as a wedding thing, back when the AKD were still using horn mirages. Led mirage is an upgrade later on and they first appeared in the Colus war in Juno

Nagano's been retconning the designs and settings with every arc. The final version of Vatshu and LED Mirage seen in the prologue-epilogue look the same as the Colus arc and barely anything like their later Majestic Stand "past" counterparts. The only difference between these older retcons and the recent Gothicmade one is that the newer designs follow an entirely different design philosophy. In reality FSS has never been about consistency with anything. It's a serial that gets updated and rebooted with every arc.
