Besides the cannons my guess is that the reactor for the beam weapons makes a good base for long fights with beam swords.

Besides the cannons and shoulders for increased mobility it didn't really look all that much like an artillery suit.

I'm in the former camp. Watching it pull off ALL the popular "super-robot" tropes from smaller animal robots combing to form one big robot to spinning rocket fists and cinematic finisher sequences made me smile and helped it stand out among all the other Gunpla in the show.

I really wish the Regenerate backpack for Proto Saviour did something; it had none of Regen's weapons and actively gets in the way of Saviour's transformation (the cannons flipping out into place).

I genuinely think that was Yzakk, not the suit. If you look at the actual Gundam, he pretty much is given a handicap compared to most others in the series when it comes with weapons, gimmicks and firepower. But Yzakk makes it work.
