Personally, the film should of released closer to or a little bit after Advance Warfare. Coming out 6 months before hand didn't do it any favors.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Edge of Tomorrow beyond the novelty of Tom Cruise getting killed over and over. Even if they took a ton of liberties over All You Need is Kill, it was a fairly decent big dumb action movie. The ending was kind of a dumb cop out though.

It definitely fell apart at the ending. While I'm not a huge fan of the novels deeply pessimistic ending, the movie's ending felt like it was copy-pasted from any one of dozens of other cheap sci-fi action flicks.

Cruise pitched an idea for the sequel? That's kind of cool, although I have literally no idea where it could go, as the ending felt pretty definite in the movie (as opposed to the novel which strangely had more room for a sequel, and it's not getting one).

Presumably one of the biggest reasons it flopped was not because of the movie itself, but because of what came directly before it.

Oblivion (2013), a post apoc sci-fi movie with Tom Cruise in it.

Elysium (2013), a gritty sci-fi movie with powered armor in it.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014), a gritty post-apoc sci-fi movie with powered armor and Tom Cruise in it.

By the time Edge came out, the public was burned out on the related subjects, so they didn't go see it. A shame, since Edge felt better paced and more fulfilling than Oblivion or Elysium.
