Why are Yokoyama's science fiction stories so neglected? Why can't any of his manga get proper and faithful adaptions?
There's the Mars TV series but it's Mao Dante-tier in animation making it unwatchable. There's a Mars OVA that's somewhat faithful but was cut short. Tetsujin 28 takes tons of liberties, Giant Robo (OVA) is basically nothing like the manga and the same with the TV series they made by the looks of it. The one chance we had of getting something faithful, the Giant Robo Pilot, was scrapped.
Have any of his works even been released overseas?
>>15505869
Dont forget Babel II, which have two anime series and a four episodes OVA.
Mars is fantastic material too bad it doesn't hace marketable stuff
>>15505902
I'm a little skeptical of the OVA or second series being any good. The TV series is 70's Toei so it's probably pretty fun, but probably abandons the source material for an episodic format like other Toei adaptions. Curious if anyone has the few episodes of if that got subbed.
A Hind D? Colonel, what's a Russian gunship doing here?
>>15505916
>Mars is fantastic material
It's pretty mediocre in all honesty
>>15505943
I think what I've read of Babel 2 is leagues better, but it's still a pretty fun work with some cool mecha designs and an iconic ending that could've admittedly been pulled off better. Also kinda feels like a remake of Tezuka's Wonder 3 except with more focus on the robot and no silly animals or kid characters.
Have to wonder why Discotek picked up the OVA to Babel II instead of the Toei series since they've done a bunch of those.
>>15505971
>iconic
It was pretty cute, but let's not go too far
>>15505982
I think it's pretty notable for being one of the earliest examples ofkill them allin mecha

>Mars TV series
>Mars OVA
I'm having trouble finding any info on these.
When did these come out?

>In 1994 there was a two-episode OVA, simply titled Mars that is pretty obscure, and in 2002 came Shin Seiki Den Mars, roughly translated as God Century Legend Mars.
Anyone have any more info o the 1994 OVA?

Damn, I had no idea half of these shows were even licensed at all.

>>15506702
Man. I really want to see this Mars OVA.
>>15505930
Oh lordy! Is that some Alberto the Impact?
>>15505869
Supposedly, the man himself was pretty lax about his works being butchered six ways to sunday. The Imagawa version of Tetsujin and the 90s Sangokushi anime are the closest we ever got to faithful adaptations of his works.
>>15507301
Enoki Films generally has domestic versions of shows ready, in the event some country wants to broadcast them.
>>15505971
I guess they want to test the waters or go with what's already been licensed in the West first.
>>15505930
Blue Fixer Subs once did the first dozen or so episodes of the show. Of course, they dropped it as soon as they decided to retire, so it's currently in limbo.
>>15507705
Do you happen to have those episodes?

No, but the archive here has them.

Is this Mars and the 1994 Mars the same as God Mars?
>>15508348
No, God Mars is very loosely based on the manga, while those two are closer to it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qa532D_yqA
Pretty cool MAD using God Mars' OP
here are the questions so far:
1. is it subbed
2. where can we download it
3. can anyone upload it
>>15508503
This!

The whole premise is straight from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still, just from the perspective of Gort.
>>15508503
The 90's Mars OVA isn't subbed.
It's on Nico Nico, last I checked
>>15508769
This. Mars is essentially the Yokoyama version of The Day the Earth Stood Still. I like both quite a bit.

Thanks, that's a pretty sweet video
Dunno if if anyone is interested, but I've uploaded all of the magazine covers Yokoyama did that I have. It's not much but I quite like the Giant Robo ones.

Didn't 2004!Tetsujin get some elements from the manga (WWII, some Tetsujin's origins, etc.) while the rest just put more drama, mishmash everything and havea bad ending?
>>15516173
Pretty much, although there's a rumor about Yokoyama suggesting the spoiler.
Based on the first two episodes, Toei's Babel II anime is really nice. They still keep the unsettling feeling the manga gave me about Babel II and he straight up melts some baddies riding on horses with an emotionless face. I wonder if it was Yokoyama's intention to create a creepy as fuck protagonist or if it's just that he isn't good at drawing character emotions?
>>15505930
>>15505971
The Babel II OVAs were animated by Shingo Araki after Saint Seiya was cancelled so it's too obvious either Toei wanted the SS audience or Araki really wanted to work on SS again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZMJ8HKKpPA
>>15518172
He also worked on the firt animated serie, years before saint seiya.
>>15518228
And his designs resembled Yokoyama. I think Araki wanted to give the manga a modern look but he went too far in some places.
>slightly aware that the Giant Robo OVA was kind of a kitchen-sink of everything Yokoyama
>Yeah sure, he did some manga adaptions of Chinese literature, those out of place Chinese characters had to come from somewhere
>Later stick my nose into Tetsujin, Mars, Babel II,
>Realize that 90% of the Giant Robo OVA came from every other manga that Yokoyama made
Fascinating. That's been my gateway to a lot of stuff
>>15521389
yeah Imagawa doing "thing" usually means "every other thing the author did guest starring thing"
>>15520998
I almost mistaken that as Cookie Monster wearing a Football jersey.
>>15521397
That's only true of Giant Robo and Shin Mazinger though.
>>15521397
>>15521422
What I find charmingly amusing is how Astro Boy: Omega Factor could easily be mistaken for one of his works, since it's like that as well (although most Tezuka characters in that just have cameos at most).
Besides, his earliest and most recent works show how adaptable he can be.
>>15521389
The Sally the Witch cameo was cool
How popular is Babel II: The Returner? Maybe one day that could get a proper anime adaptation?
>>15521389
>>15521397
I heard Imagawa speak in Houston some years ago, about the same time G-Gundam was premiering on Cartoon network.
He said that they had wanted to do a strait adaptation of Yokoyama's work but they weren't given the rights to do so.
Instead they were told that they could use a bunch of his characters in an original story.
That's how Giant Robo came about.
>>15527603
>weren't given the rights to do so.
>modern GR TV show could have been a proper adaptation, but Konaka had to change it
Is the Yokoyama estate such a bunch of selfish, greedy pricks that they don't even let people adapt the author's works faithfully?
>>15521397
>yeah Imagawa doing "thing" usually means "every other thing the author did guest starring thing"
Imagawa's "thing" that he did maybe twice if you count Shin Mazinger.
>>15529276
Didn't he do it with Getter too?
>>15529319
A Little. One of the Metal Beasts and Cowen/Stingers Invader form are both from Kyomu Senki. However since they showed up after he was removed as director they would of had to be in what ever notes he left behind if they were his idea.
In a Semi-related note, New Getter, which he had no involvement, in also ends up borrowing from Kyomu senki for villains( Abe no Seimei's monster form and the Four Gods)
>>15529362
I always thought of Kawagoe as a discount Imagawa; less dense plots, more action, but still pays homage to a bunch of a specific author's works (though his 009 series was not a crossover but an adaptation).
>>15529362
Wasn't Ryouma's design based on Majuu Sensen?
>>15529362
Kyomu Senki felt pretty in line with Getter AFTER reading Ark, the whole technobuddhists in space reciting mantra becomes a thing after all.
It's likely that like his art-style, Ishikawa was also going to borrow ideas from his other works into Getter.
Imagawa can be very authentic when he feels like it, the recent Gifuu Doudo - Kanetsugu to Keiji really captured the spirit of Tetsuo Hara writing even if it was animated like ass.
Poor Yasuhiro had no budget and still put in a lot of work.
>>15529276
>>15529362
>a little
He did it extensively in Getter for just a three episode romp. Ryouma is literally Shinichi from Majuu Sensen, along with Stinger and Cohen. The Invaders are Dogura from Kyomu Senki.
>Be invincible
>Have 3 servants
>One is a giant flying bird
>Other is transforming panther
>And a giant robot
>Why won't he fight me fairly
Yomi is the most sympathetic villain
>>15529884
>Yomi is the most sympathetic villain
I'd sympathize with damn near anyone if they had to face Babel. What a ludicrously powerful character.
>>15505869
Is there any Giant Robo anime or show where it actually fights all those cool robots and machines shown for one second during the Armageddon OVA opening? Like the big head in the OP.
>>15511420
Sweet. Thanks!
I recognize most if those mecha or their titles...

>Tetsujin 28, Black Ox, & others
>Thunder Daioh
>Midori No Maou

>Deimos

They're both green, I guess???
>>15530311
I don't like watching anime that's only partly subbed because by the time the whole thing finally has subs I'm gonna have to watch the early episodes again anyway because I've completely forgotten about them.
>>15526214
strong enough, I doubt it will be ever animated... and recently it just added the Mars storyline.
>>15533249
>because by the time the whole thing finally has subs
I doubt it ever will unless Discotek picks it up. Might check the OVA out since it looks pretty decent.
>>15530423
Fuck off, fujifruit. Thunder 7 is not Yokoyama.
>>15534302
I actually made this thread so I don't know why you're shitposting about me.
I did respond to that post, though
>>15530485
>>15534302
Then why was a Thunder 7 cover included in a file filled exclusively with Yokoyama art?
Also, you seem to have difficulty with reading comprehension. Let's read the post again.
>Midori No Maou, Tetsuno Samson, & Thunder 7 are essentially the same mecha designs
I still stand by the statement.
>>15535634
Could be an error on my part. I have about a dozen folders for artists and sometimes they get mixed in. Also could be because it was tagged as Yokoyama on the blog post. Again, sorry. The name of the actual artist is Inoue Hideoki. I'll fix it in the next version of the rar.
This is the greatest show
>>15505869
I just want to know how it got to this pointI actually really want to watch this show anyway because I find the idea of Tetsujin being in a Brave-esque show as the artwork suggests to be infinitely amusing
>>15536225
The show even keeps the whole battle of wits thing going that's from the manga. With Yomi and Babel 1upping each other.
>>15538760
>it's so wrong to see these two mecha standing side by side

>>15539318
Worried about how many times I'm going to have to go back and re-read everything in case they put it on hold again.
>>15538760
>>15539318
>Technically, it's more of a diet G Gundam/Red Baron than anything.
I don't really agree. The other countries robots are mostly important in the first 10 episodes or so. The remainder of the first half involves Black OX and the main plot with the villain faction. The second half is all shitty filler and has no plot. I'm almost certain that it was a last minute extension to fill a time slot.
The first half is actually quite good though. The Black OX arc with Dr. Franken is pretty compelling and has some good fights.
>>15538760
I dub this TINO (Tetsujin In Name Only)
>>15539318
>>15539876
Are there actually subs for FX, or are you all moon speakers?
>>15539878
It's closer to Tetsujin than the fucking 80s series. The flashback episode is actually pretty good.
>>15539889
Not me, but some person recapped the whole thing here: http://rokettopanchii.blogspot.ca/2012/11/tetsujin-28-fx.html
>>15539620
At least they won't drop it.
>>15540299
Which is funny, because it actually is a sequel to the original show, and not the 80s one.
Also, fun fact, the writer did work on Raijin-Oh and Machine Robo shows, so the Brave-esque feel is natural.
https://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=creator&creatorid=5273
>>15540380
>Which is funny, because it actually is a sequel to the original show, and not the 80s one.
Not really, the Black Ox storyline they show in flashbacks contradicts both the show and the manga. It's more like a pseudo-sequel like Kotetsushin Jeeg or something.
>>15541170
I don't think the staff were that self-aware, in this case it's more a case of them not giving a damn about consistency overall. After all, Godmars (also animated by TMS) had about 3 explanations on whatever Zuul is (then they had his own minions turn into him, because Gestalt).
It's probably best to treat it as its own Tetsujin thing.
>>15541191
Interesting.
