exactly, same with the fins on the head, torso isn't too bad, but it's thinness means it doesn't work with a lot of legs

also you'd think by this point in time we could get games with customization that could keep parts from clipping through each other

It's not just CG that enables this sort of thing you know. Any time an artist is given completely free reign on what he is asked to design, it will usually come out pretty elaborately.

Mind you I have only seen the awful movies, I've heard the manga is notably better

Pretty much every design from Super Robot Wars OG.

They cram so many plots and characters that it's become a shitshow whose only redeemable qualities are the gameplay and designs, I couldn't care less about the plot just show off them flashy attacks and cool robots.
