Americans like it because the mecha are realistic.

Mind you, American perception and definition of realism for mecha is actually not rooted anywhere close to realism, but is actually "oh it's gritty and has weathering and used by the military therefore it must be realistic".

Because it was one of the earlier Gundam's brought to the US straight after Wing, and before G. In an era where fansubs were more niche or outright non-existent for most shows.
