***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Those are the only options I can think of. There are parts sets with other types of heads, the Gya Eastern set comes to mind forgiving a GM type head, but it's not a Zeta head. Also some of the kits come with two heads, check which ones on Dalong.
>>
>>15495521
you might be able to pick up a super cheap mostly built kit on ebay, and if the head is in decent enough condition you can clean it up and repair it if need be. sure you'll have an entire kit, but it will be much cheaper than buying a new unbuilt one

Do you not have the time to practice a bit on a throwaway kit/a bunch of spoons first?
>>
>>15495881
Imagine the shittiest Chinese bootleg Minecraft sword, and you would have an idea. Belt sanders are not optimal for small parts. I went to town on that bad boy with some sand paper and now it kind of looks like a spatula.

It'll do, but I'm not happy with it.

>>15495932
I will practice on some spoons and one of my first test kits for sanding. I'm using Vallejo Model Air, and I'm not sure how long I need to wait for the paint to cure, and I'm nervous about ruining it while trying to put the kit back together.

And I still need some sort of protective top coat.

Vallejo states 48 hours on their website, seems to be true from my experience with handbrushing their paint.

I'm waiting on my airbrush equipment and I have run out of patience. If I ever buy something big like this again I will make sure I can get it somewhat quickly, I am not made for this.

Where do I buy patience?

Was trying out acrylic paints for the first time today, painting by hand, and didn't realize that Tamiya is completely different from your "standard" water based acrylic, and ended up thinning with water. I'm painting by hand at least, and it was a $5 kit. What's the difference end up looking like? Would it work out to do a second coat with the proper thinner?
>>
>>15496040
>ended up thinning with water
not good, tamiya acrylics are immersed in a lacquer solution
>I'm painting by hand
also not good, tamiya acrylics tend to leave large brush strikes and are usually better for airbrushing
>$5 kit
this is good though, you can fuck up as much as you want on this

To answer this question the Hiaroo comes with 4 Cannon hard points built into the hurrduu II shoulder attachments. I nodded the rear ones with 3mm female polycaps to be compatible with thrusters from the byalarnt custom. The side hard points are fixed at their huge size so I shaped some polycaps and forced them in place to hold the full burnen thruster pods.

Here's what I have planned so far for this guy.

There will be more blue, but this is a rough sketch. I might also make the arms asymmetrical with the right arm (not shoulder) being the ZZII while the left being the ReZel. This is mainly because the ZZII rifle attaches onto the arm.

Which shoulders should I use? The ReZel or ZZII?

Which feet should I use? ReZel, ZZII, or ZII? The legs are definitely going to be the ReZel's

For someone who is looking to get into airbrushing, is the rec in the guide still good?

I see the Badger Patriot recommended in a few places online and for compressors most of what I've read is "don't skimp but otherwise it's not a huge deal".

I can float $200-250 comfortably on a setup, but since I'm an amateur I don't want to make a stupid buying mistake. Like there's some talk of a tank + compressor combo which seems like it might be convenient in the long run.

A lot of the new Gunpla stores think retail is a high margin business that they can just sit back and bask in money. They don't even do as much PR as HLJ does for gunpla alone and they think they can get away with charging 2x the cost when they're basically shady, nameless shops.

Gundamplanet is a shitter in prices too but they survive because they're actually known as a cool place to visit in NJ, and the builders I've met are all customers even though they have shit prices

Alright /m/en, I could use some input from you. I'm painting my 00 seven swords and I'd like to know how I'm doing.

I'm not sure if the top coat is doing the paint justice. The paint layer is very nice and thin, but when I apply the mat top coat I find that the kit looks a bit more ... thick? I don't know if that is just me and that it is the same with everyone else's kits, but I do find it somewhat noticeable (might also be the fact that the mat coat just makes it look that way?). Might be I'm, just seing ghosts and that this is how it looks for everyone in real life.

Anyway could some of you have a look and give your oppinion on the matter?

RD is NON-scale. It's likely 1/144 but not. some are way too small , some are way too big.
Testament guy is on a small side, while new RD is bigger than initial release and close to 1/144 than the past.

It is a Toy so it is normal to be expensive than pla kits.

Which kit? I got a 1/144 HG Shining Gundam kit as my first about a month ago. Assembled but didn't paint him.

>>15498732
That might be what I am missing, peeling before dry. When it dries I sometimes have a lot of trouble peeling it, and when that happens I use a dull exacto blade to gently cut the tape free from the paint.

>>15498733
I have only made 2 Gundam models so far, and I haven't panel lined or painted them yet. I've been practicing painting other plastic crud to get good (basically practice on garbage) before I do the ones I made because I like them A LOT and don't want to basically ruin them.

For example I got a gundam marker set and panel lined a few things to practice, and when using the flowing ones, I tend to accidentally apply too much and I haven't figured out how to get the excess up without just smearing it around.

So far for learning how to paint stuff I've been using spray paint (separate primers, paint, and top coat) as well as acrylic paints with either a brush or diluted down so I can airbrush with it.

I have to say, the acrylics always look nicer than spray paint and the airbrush gives a gorgeous coloring and coating.

I've tried painter's blue tape, the tan low-stick tape (can't remember the name) and some green low-stick tape.

Most of the time the lines aren't crisp or other issues with it getting stuck then looking bad when removed.

I think the latter is caused by not removing it while the paint is wet. But as for why the lines aren't crisp and how to get perfect lines on surfaces, that's a complete mystery to me.

>>15498745
What's the kit number for that? It looks really good.

I'm trying to find a lot of inexpensive kits to practice on.

The old Wave kits are like 3500 yen a piece and came out in the late 80s, and you get what you pay for. Volks kits are not Bandai quality but they're far easier to put together than all the GK's and the Wave kits.

Only buy the old Wave kits if you want to admire the contents like the diecast parts and cool boxart/construction manual instead of actually building the kit. They're harder to put together than most resin kits.

Found out there's a weeb store about 17 minutes away. I'm going back for a lunch with a consulting client, what are cool looking sets a beginner can look out for? I bought an MG 1/100 Shining Gundam and a GM Sniper today.
>>
>>15499488
I wish I had weeb stores near me. Best I have is comic shops that might have a gundam or two.
>>
>>15499504
I have one that's run by an old couple. The old man was considerably more knowledgeable than I, and recommended I watch MS08 War in the Pocket to go along with my GM Sniper.
>>
>>15499511
where do you live? I'm in Portland and I struggle to find good shops like that. Order my kits off of amazon for that reason but would rather support a local shop.
>>
>>15499518
I used to live relatively close to you, in Crescent City, CA. There was a weeb shop back in '01 there. I used to go there to buy pokemon cards and trade/battle pokemon from 98-01.

I'm in Missouri now and while there are plenty of retro game stores, this is the first anime-focused one.

I've been having a rough week and the wife suggested we go to this non-franchise game store I like in a nearby mall. I was in there and asked the guys behind the counter to search if any gundam breaker copies came in. They hadn't but when I was going to leave they told me an anime store opened up in the mall like 4-5 shops down. Sure enough, and the back room had tvs/tables/chairs to watch anime, a general lounge, a place to do gunpla competitions (which they hold monthly ones apparently with 4 times a year more serious build competitions) plus a huge wall of gunpla sets.

I called a friend who lives in Florida now, and he asked me to buy/ship him a set so I'm sending him a Unicorn.
>>
>>15499534
That place sounds great
>>
>>15499534
Well, I felt out of my element. I've watched around a handful or more of anime shows, but there are plenty that just don't mesh with me.

I have played videogames since I was a child though. The spread of gamers no longer is full of throngs of people who spent time as youngins playing SNES with like 3-4 friends from the area after playing outside till near dark.

Not many in game stores who remember being the first to beat an NES/SNES/Sega title and lording it over all the peasants.

Also a lot of games today are just made to simply be completed, not really to be challenging but to be diversionary.

So I've found a fun hobby in Gunpla but I belong somewhere between the two stores, and unfortunately what occupies that space now is a sports memorabilia store.

Yeah, I'm hoping when I return to see who's there and what quality stuff they're building that it's not super spergy. The people walking out when I went in were like 5x 16-18 year old dudes wearing what you'd expect of some weebs their age.

I'm hoping when I go I can learn something and don't come out the most educated because despite only building a few models I've been practicing painting for a few months. I can't get masking down for shit but I am good at getting around that with airbrush work.

Now if I can just work up the balls to try a panel wash with some of my acrylics.

Saw a video on melting runners to reuse them so I tried applying it here. Drilled out the camera eye and melted some light blue runner into a small thin shape. Glued it to the back.

The legs on my 1/144 HG Shining Gundam fall off easily. I haven't given him a coat of spray because I want to panel line and pose him, perhaps even do some weathering.

Well suffice to say I used some of my wife's nail polish clear coat or whatever it's called on the joint based on someone's suggestion here. It added just enough thickness when it dried so the joint is stiff but still comes out or turns nicely.
Possibly useful: I use the exacto blade to cut the excess on their head crown V thing. The back of the tips are fat for some reason and it bugs me so I cut them down to be pointy.

sand down them nubs for one, nub sanding is one of the most important things to make your kits look good. Start with low grit (rougher) to sand it off, and move up to higher grits (finer) to re-polish the rough patches. Looks like you had some trouble with his dick V sticker, did you apply it by hand or with tweezers? and what happened with his red chin thing? Lasttly if you're feeling up to it try sanding off the safety flags on his V fin.

I've got a Titus and a Dark Hound (best variants are best), and I agree. I'm just sad that I really don't have space for 1/100 anymore. I keep buying 1/144 because I still have a place to put them, but that's going to dry up sooner rather than later too. This is to say nothing of my pile of unopened PGs sitting in a nook off the hallway.

Got any G Gundam stuff boxed up in that stash? I have kids so the ones I make just for practice I do some stuff to make them tough them give'em to them to play with.

I've also taken some to a local shop to give away to weebs. I leave them with an employee and he just sets them on the counter. Gives them to whoever likes them.

Not much. There's a finished MG Spiegel sitting in a box somewhere, but that's about it. The vast majority of my stash is going nowhere except storage. I'm in a small apartment right now, but that won't be the case forever.

That's too bad. I prefer buying from people over importing every time, and stuff on Amazon is usually considerably more expensive than importing.

People you can develop relationships. They'll give you a fair price but you trade value back and forth to maintain the relationship. It's mutually beneficial. For example the shop I use a few towns over, I help them out with any IT/IS consulting/solutions they need. As a result if I'm asking them to get me something specific vs coming in and picking something off of the shelf for the hell of it, they usually handle all of it for me, hold on to it for me, and charge me what they pay. In return I'm keeping their systems up, keeping an online inventory system up for both website and internal inventory purposes, and they have transaction recording to be able to have good sales data to make decisions based off of. Not to mention I still always will come in and buy a ball or random HG to slap together and they make a decent profit off of those.

You wouldn't be very interested in anything I have anyways. The only things that aren't built are the PGs, and I'm planning on building them myself before too long. There's the group of them I won from one of the gundam.info giveaways, and a few that I bought to supplement them when I was loaded with excess cash from an insurance payout, but the nook that currently holds them in their boxed, unbuilt state will eventually be built out into a set of shelves. If I can find the money, maybe some custom glass doors and LED lighting.

>>
>>15499881
GM Sniper II has an HG that's pretty solid, a Robot Spirits figure that seems similar, and an MG that is said to be the best one.

The Guncannon Revive HG is excellent, the Guntank HG is much older, but really how much articulation and modern engineering can you get out of the Guntank anyway?

There are 1/60 models of both of Domon's Gundams, but I have no idea how good they are.

I'm not sure what Gundam you're referring to here. Ground Gundam and Blue Destiny are "RX-79", or did you mean RX-78-2 with the Javelin? If so, the 2.0 MG has it.

So what's the gimmick behind these hexagears? It says "scrap n build" but I don't get it, does that mean you can disassemble and reassemble them into different configurations or something? I really like the look of some of them so I'm curious
>>
>>15499965
Never mind it was actually a stupid question. I don't even know why I asked.

To make it quick, I asked if saving decals for later could make them get worse with time and won't stick to the old plastic of the model, something like that.

Apology for poor english
>>
>>15499978
If you don't make sure to clean all the dust and finger oil off the kits then decals won't stick properly at least
>>
>>15499978
Not a dumb question. For example I had an older set and stored it until use, but I had removed the plastic wrapping. The stickers absorbed too much humidity in the storage and were useless. Now that gundam has lifeless soulless eyes.

Gunpla CAN fall apart easily, but I've noticed that the more I build the more sturdy they seem to be.
There's also tricks you learn to thickening the joints and such that make them sturdier.

That being said, my Astray Blue Second L has only ever had issues with the back of the hands popping off, so I ended up needing to thicken the connectors.

When trying to get painting and stuff down, it's typical to use HG sets so they're faster to build and cheaper to experiment on. It's a bit of a shame to fall in love with a MG while you're building it then be disappointed when your painting skills aren't on the same level as the kit's production.

Maybe put a dot of black inside of the vulcans on his chest and head to give that "this is the inside of a barrel" look. I've started drilling mine out a little for the depth look.

I'm not the guy you were talking to, but he probably made the mini-Falcon kit Bandai just came out with. It has the classic circular radar dish, the bigger Banda 1/144 Falcon is from The Force Awakens with the rectangular dish.

I can get testors locally or order some tamiya stuff. I'm probably going to leave the frame alone and just paint the armor and weapons.

So I came here to see if I could solve my masking problem too. Used blue tape for this (ignore how bad the red paint looks, was the anon trying to hand-paint using tamiya acrylics, tried out my airbrush for the black paint here, and it just is really obvious because of the flash), and I guess it didn't stick right. Tried cleaning up some parts with rubbing alcohol on a q-tip and it helped a little but smudged a bit of the red paint. Does that mean it hadn't cured fully, or would it have done that even if it was?

Thinning with only 70% isopropyl alcohol, maybe it didn't dry as fast as it should have?

I just finished this guy up today, I tried giving it a sort of used and abused test type look and I think it came out pretty well. The only gripe I have with it is that I only have glossy clear coat so some parts look too shiny for my tastes. I really need to find a place that sells matte in my area.

Apparently bandai said look forward to more msd to be announced at hobby show. Theres a few more rx-78-1 types we have yet to get model wise before the rx-78-2 and its variants. They have a few models of gouf types we know of that leads to the dom prototypes. Including the better known dom prototype that looked like a heavier looking dom.

Msd is the in between suit variants and models of a mobile suits development unless I miss understood it.

its the msv for the origin

and its fucking retarded while we're at it, if the local type is any indication

But building old kits builds character, right?

Nicely done, good color scheme and everyone thinking about trying out weathering should look at yours as a good example of doing it without going full retard.

Only problem is I can't tell if that bumpy orange peel texture is intentional or if you fucked up the spraying. Matte clear coat is generally better for hiding those issues.
>>
>>15502012
IIRC the idea/story behind the line is it's the EF post war going through design documents for prototypes that never got past initial prototype or even planning stage of development during the war.

In real life it's basically Origin MSV and exists because the Origin flashback arc only has guntank, guncannon, and like 6 zaku so they want to flesh out and fill in the line.

Thanks! I went overboard on the weathering on my last kit, so I took it nice and easy with this one. Glad to see it payed off!

>Only problem is I can't tell if that bumpy orange peel texture is intentional or if you fucked up the spraying.

Unfortunately its a fuck up, I'm still pretty new to airbrushing so I'm still ironing out the kinks and trying to thin my paint as best I can. I'm not too bummed on it on this kit though because it kind of goes with the look, but I do want to improve in that aspect.

Camera is in a good place. It's a tad dark imo. And if you werent familiar with the Helmwige, you wouldn't be able to tell how they were positioned. It took me a minute to figure out it wasn't facing the Graze.
It's good all in all, though.

>>
>>15502309
Is there even any bridge between the Gundam and GM? They're like exactly the same except one is a budget version for mass production.
A GM revive that uses the 78-2 revive would be more likely, but they won't because Jim doesn't move units outside of customs
>>
>>15502318
The Local Type was something they totally pulled out of their ass, they could do something similar with the GM if they wanted to.
Does the GM really not sell well though? But GMs are perfect

Stylin. I know I had a stressful week, and I'm plopped down with an RX-78-2 that was recommended in the OP, I can feel the shit just melt away.

I got one today, a Zaku for my kid. They're very rubber feeling, like a gum eraser.

I got a guncannon today and it's yellow. I guess I haven't seen that one yet. I like the red one from MSG though, I want a guntank too.

Well I cant speak much about airbrushing techniques because I'm still trying to get good at that, but for the weathering I took it slow, thinking about where parts would rub up against each other during movement and dry brushed some black and silver in those areas.

I read that you should try to make a story with your weathering, so I tried that out too, basically thinking of various ways inexperienced pilots would mess up while piloting. Bumping into things, falling over, dropping weapons, etc. and tried to communicate that through dry brushing and some pastels.

I read about panel lining with a sort of pastel water mixture and tried it out to mixed results, so I ended up thinning some black acrylic paint and using it, and since its water based it was easy enough to remove any mistakes.

I hope this helps!

I checked the OP, and there's not mention of the specifics but I'm new to gunpla and have some markers. I got a set that came with 4 slanted tipped ones with tips that dispense liquid paint. It also came with one that has a fine tip felt marker. I went to get more colors and ended up with ones that have tips similar to mechanical pencils.

Can someone give me a rundown of the differences and uses?
-Are they the same paint type or different?
-It seems the ones that dispense paint are good for panel lining like I've seen in videos. Just press and it flows through the thin channels. What other jobs on the gundam can they be used for?
-The thin tip seems like a normal coloring marker. I'm afraid the tip will wear easily with use, what is it intended for?
-The mechanical pencil tipped ones (gm01/02/03) are really nice, and I've been using them for some of the panel lining too. Any tips for these?
-When I have an open space to detail, which one should I use? (as opposed to an edge or thin channel)
