***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

**MELEE GROUP BUILD**

Build/paint a robot with a loadout focused on melee combat! Anything from shields to swords to lances to axes to bare fists is fair game. There's no room for ranged weaponry here, however, so anything resembling a rifle, Rocket Launcher, cannon, pistol, or any other ranged weapon is a no-go (Small ranged weapons that are built into the kit itself like head vulcans are ok, however).

More clarification here:
>If the body part has a built-in ranged weapon (head/chest vulcans, claw beams, etc), then that's fine. If it's a separate part like the Alex's arm vulcans it's best to leave those off.
>Melee weapons with in-universe ranged capabilities (Like the Kimaris's lance or the Gyan's shield) are fair game too.
>Any scale and any brand is fair game here, you're not limited to just using Gundams this time around.

Only really try it if you will be painting your kits as there is no good way to fix errors without putty.
>>
>>15489587
>>15489648
Hit post early. You will need a scriber, don't buy the one by tamiya grab a higher quality one. You're essentially just scratching in new panel lines.

Practice and patience will be needed and you will screw up or make bad looking ones.

What are you guys working on?
>>
>>15489855
my hobby lobby didn't have any pens like the gundam panel line pens that worked for me at all. some people just use pencils and shit but it looks bad imo. if you want the specific ones look on amazon or usagundam. if you wanna get adventurous look into tamiya panel accent, it's just paint you drop in the panel line and it fills on it's own, shit is magical.
>>
>>15489859
Would a Blick Art store? I feel like some place in a fairly large city should have 'super fine point' black and grey markers. I only ask because I'm going for a supply run tomorrow morning.
>>
>>15489861
Just order some. I'm certain you could find some from any USA based store. Or just order them from amiami along with a kit so it's worth the shipping fee.
>>
>>15489861
go ahead and check them out man but i've had no luck with em and i live in one of the largest cities in florida. if you have any like actual hobby shop for trains or model planes they are almost guaranteed to have panel lining tools whether it be the markers or accent paint.

I'm working on making this bigass fuckin' Zaku less boring as shit. You'd think Bandai would work one or two interesting gimmicks into something the size of a small child, but no, it's just a roided out high grade.

So far I've converted the leg tubes from solid chunks of plastic to having coax wire as a flexible core, then I'll do the rest of the tubes the same. It's probably the most pointless upgrade, but it adds a bit of fun to it.

After that, I'll probably make some thrusters out of aluminum on the lathe to replace the flat bottom molded in shit Bandai cut corners with.

I dont use model air, buy model collor and I thin that stuff (model air apperantly doesnt need to be thinned for airbrushing) then paint it at 15 psi. I do however sometimes use higher psi for primers.

18 psi does seem like a low maximum, but for shooting paint it should be enough.

As for model air, I have no idea how they hold up, but I gebrally love the Vallejo products.

Welp, I finished painting my first Gundam. What a journey. I still need to do decals and a flat coat, but otherwise it's all finished.

I learned a ton. First of all, I learned how to properly use my airbrush (including how thinned some paints need to be and how to go about cleaning it). I also learned a lot about masking and how fucking easily Vallejo paint comes off Jesus fucking Christ. I also learned a lot about doing enamel panel washes and how FUCKING EASILY VALLEJO PAINT COMES OFF. Jesus Christ, I put on a gloss coat and let it dry for 24 hours and all it takes for the paint to rub off is a light dabbing from a W-tip. Fucking hell dude. I like Vallejo and I certainly had an easier time with it than with Tamiya, but I think I'm going to have to do at least two coats of varnish from now on.

I also did some seam welding. The knees, arms, and shoulders all came in two parts and had massive seamlines running down the middle. I welded and sanded them into one piece, and I think the results were pretty good. I also got to experiment with using paraffin wax sheets to wrap the grey arm parts while I painted the wrists and shoulders. That worked pretty well.

Overall I'm pretty happy with it. I learned a lot and I think my next one will be better. I'm either doing a EX-S Gundam or a GP04.

You should wait 48 hours for vallejo paint to cure.
What did you use to remove the excess enamel? That might also have been an issue.
>>
>>15492953
I haven't had any trouble with my vallejo coming off. Did you use primer?
>>
>>15493218
I used Vallejo primer underneath. Most of the paint came off in corners or raised areas, which I'm assuming is where the paint pooled away from while drying or where my q-tip caused more abrasion.

>>15493208
I was waiting 24 hours. I guess I'll give it more time next time.

I was using Testors enamel and Testors enamel Thinner for the wash.
>>
>>15493232
vallejo is water based acryllic, even their gloss coats. this means enamel will destroy them in seconds. the gloss isn't meant for protection, it's meant to give paint a shiny coat.
>>
>>15493244
You can use an enamel wash over vallejo gloss varnish just fine. Just let it cure before you apply the wash. It will flow and clean up just fine.
>>
>>15493262

Is there any difference between using (zippo) lighter fluid and using enamel thinner for the cleanup?
>>
>>15493267

zippo and other naptha based thinners are much less harsh than enamel thinner, so it's less likely to mess with your clear while cleaning
>>
>>15493271

All right, thanks.

On the gloss coat topic I kind of wish I had access to Future but I do not. I saw a page full of equivalents to it but did not see one for my country.
>>
>>15493271
Really? Hm, then that might have been my problem on the Hazel. I guess I'll have to pick up some Zippo fluid.

Can you use Zippo fluid to thin the enamel? Or should I be using enamel + thinner to do the wash, then Zippo to clean up?
>>
>>15493286

vallejo gloss is fine, lots of people use it
future is ok too

Mr. Super Clear is the top dog in my experience, and is stronger than anything else, never have to worry about washes eating through or fingerprints, it's amazing

In the end you just end up trying to use lacquers as much as possible because paint strength is really really important in gunpla.

When I want to handpaint a detail or something I will use vallejo because it's so effortless to work with, let it cure and then coat it with Super Clear to seal it.
>>
>>15493292

I mix my enamels with zippo for washes, works fine.
>>
>>15493303

I can see why, I'm just getting started airbrushing (my shit hasn't even arrived yet) and I wanna give acrylics a go in the start at least because I thought it would be easier to clean up, less smell, healthier etc (though I guess the last point is "unnecessary" since I have ventilation booth + respirator).

I will certainly start using some lacquers, for metallic colours they seem to be by far the best choice, and the vallejo primer isn't perfect either since as far as I understand you can't really sand it, which you generally can with lacquer primers.

Lacquer paint seems to be less common in my country than acrylics (noone carries the "normal paint" mr color lacquer) , but I think at least the mr color primers and top coats + alclad etc is available.
>>
MG Char's Zaku II v2.0 doesn't have any waterslides in the kit or does it? I see a light blue sheet in there, but I'm not sure whether this is a waterslide sheet or not
>>
>>15493341

Pretty sure it comes with stickers and dry transfer decals.
>>
>>15493334

The metallic true lacquers like alclad are very different than the "lacquer based acrylics" like Mr. Hobby as you will discover. Alclad is more like fine metal particles suspended in very "hot" thinner, they get shiny by the fast evaporation, but they are basically just sitting on the surface.

Alclad is actually very very fragile and you should order some Aqua Gloss with it if you want to clear it. (Make sure to follow the instructions on the aqua gloss if you don't want to take your airbrush apart and clean it.)Other wise many clears will slightly disturb the metallic surface and your shiny nice piece will get all glittery.

I mention this because people hear "alclad is a lacquer" and then think "my clear is a lacquer, so lacquer on lacquer is fine!" when nothing could be farther from the truth. I personally switched to Mr. Super Metallic for metallic parts I need to work with or mask because alclad makes me add an extra step of aqua gloss + cure waiting.
>>
>>15493334

Also as for giving acrylics a try at first, that's a great way to start and it is much easier to work with. You could do the whole kit in acrylics, let it really cure for a week or so, then do a lacquer top coat and it will be really strong too.

The only lacquer products I personally think are nearly necessary are primer and top coat, and both can be done with cans very well. You need a good surface and you need it to not get worn away when you pose the kit.
>>
>>15492144

Don't get me wrong, i like the kits from 0080, love me some Zaku Kai and GM Cold, but fuck this thing. If they wanted to make it look like the Alex fine, but use the newer Revive style not the older stuff.
Even Build Fighters had better UC variants than this.

>If they wanted to make it look like the Alex fine, but use the newer Revive style not the older stuff.
This is what bugs me most about the Tristan kit; it shows that they have no intention of making a modern Alex kit any time soon.
>>
>>15493347

I know it's fragile as fuck + takes a lot of prep work. I think I'm gonna give some of the AK xtreme metal paints a try because they seem to be like easier to use/more durable alclad, but we'll see. I have at least noted the existence of the aqua gloss.

>>15493355

I still have some spare cans of tamiya primer and top coat that I can use.
I do want to see for myself just how fragile something done in all acrylics is though. First few kits will just be practice anyway.

When I made my bulk order of paint I hadn't found a good source for the mr color stuff yet, but now I have.

Isn't lacquer supposed to be a no no on RG inner frames by the way, as they have ABS parts?
Or is painting those inner frames insanity in general due to how they are made?

But this thing is gonna get milked to hell, so it's obvious that it's gonna be a whole new frame. I can't wait for the RG Phenex coated in gold meikki without any undergated parts that'll be P-Bandai and cost like $60 before reseller markup. I can only hope they do a Full Armor Plan B kit.

Did a little more work on this nerd today. To complement the expanding knee of the zaku I sniper I changed the "claw" gimmick of the thunderbolt zaku I foot to be like a foot support. I'm really happy with how it fits the project. I also am changing up the rifle a bit; I want to make the grooves on the barrel tip look like the ones on the gun next. I also made a little smoke grenade with a cracker bottom to hang on him somewhere.

Painting RGs can certainly be done, and at least Mr. Surfacer is fine on inner frames, but I think many painters avoid RGs because all of the pains of painting moving parts get even worse with RG size parts. The paint changes the tolerances proportionally more the smaller you get, so every layer you do is scarier. I like the RG line, and I plan to paint a couple that I have, but anything else seems more fun whenever I have to actually decide... I think most serious painters build MG because if you are going to go through the work it's a nicer size.

looks nice and really nice picture

I need to get into gunpla again.

What's the Bellpepper going to be if/when it gets something? RG or RE/100? Bandai may be madmen, but I don't see them doing an MG.
>>
>>15494411
Kshatriya? prob re 1/100, they made a huge ass Nightingale after all
>>
>>15494411
iirc, they said for them to do a mg they need to incorporate metal in the inner frame, so best bet is to do a re/100 and make a bunch of parts hollow like nightingale
>>
>>15493244
How well does Vallejo gloss varnish stand up to gunpla being handled?

And if not, will Tamiya clear coat spray be alright to topcoat Vallejo paint layers, or should I go straight to Mr. Top Coat?

No fuck you, the leo is dogshit. It's essentially the same as a Tallgeese except without anything that makes it cool. At least tallgeese (III) has a cool gun and thrusters, the Leo is straight up gay. Even GMs have 31 flavors.
>>
>>15494474
Wing
>'95

>'07

I've been waiting twice as long as you have for a basic grunt suit.

>without anything that makes it cool
I disagree, and think it looks cooler and has more customization options because it isn't some super special one of a kind prototype suit.

People like Char's Zaku...
>it's just red
>>
>>15494494
People like Char's Zaku II because it's a Zaku II, a good looking unit. The Leo is completely unappealing in every sense of the word. The gun looks like it's a spray gun and it's dorky as shit.
And you can fuck off because The Wing Gundam itself has as many MG variations as 00 has MGs, and then every "major" suit in Wing has one as well, even if Altron, TIII, and Heavyarms fell victim to P-Bandai jewery.

>muh grunt wank
>>
So what do you guys think about Thunderbolts Ground Type S? I thought I liked it, but the life-raft feet are starting to bug me, and the saber hilts being mounted on the sub-arms seems wrong. I almost prefer the blocky simplicity of the thunderbolt GM
>>
>>15494534
Another anon who complained about the feet here. I think I'll either sand them into flatter shapes or just replace them with something else's. Maybe the Thunderbolt GM's feet.
>>
>>15494534
The previous thunderbolt GMs were better.
Between this and the cheap-ass Tristan and Zaku it makes me wonder if the alleged Unicorn RG and upcoming ZZ MG is sucking down all the engineering guys.
>>
>>15494428
>Implying by then there won't be a 3rd party MG of it
>>
>>15494560
At this point I wouldn't wonder.

That RG Unicorn is gonna need all the help it can get.
>>
>>15494534
the feet can deploy air bags
>>
>>15494534
i've always hated the ez-8 head, it always bothered me. basically have the same thoughts as you, not a fan of the life raft feet and thunderbolts fascination of subarms are starting to get to me. it was cool seeing full armor gundam having them, but giving it to every suit loses its charm. biggest draw of the ground type was the huge camping backpack and artillary gun. without it, kinda looks generic in a way, but i guess thats the point
