Let's be fair now, a little bit of cynicism in response to the trend the show's taken during its first quarter is very justified. I'm not saying that Red-focused shows can't work but the problem is when they have no one else in the cast who really stands out as a character, they become a basic black hole. For a series that wanted from day one to tout how big the cast was going to be, there's been very little effort put into developing anyone and with not only a narrative but also merchandising bend towards RedWank, you start seeing where the problems begin.

Ninnin's worst crime was being too safe. And it was the head writer's first big gig so that's forgivable. I'd say the story payoff at the end was decent and even sort of bold for Japan. (We don't have to follow the rigid guidelines set by our elders, we can make our own way, etc)

Eh, I really disagree. Limiting the villains to specific arcs is generally much better than keeping them around throughout the entire show sitting in the hq with only a few shuffles before the final arc. It gives a nice sense of progression.

The biggest essential problem with Raptor is that even though her design is really cool, it means that when she transforms she HAS to be a special effect and cannot fight directly. I'm beginning to think her design was the biggest mistake. Sigh.

I liked her in episodes 1 through 6 but the show has essentially given up on her. Raptor doesn't even bonk Xiao on the head anymore. Hammy also stopped finding things hilariouis and Champ has never said HIS catchphrase and hasn't mentioned how much he hates Stinger in a while.

The writing's just bad. Anyone who has a story or some character that takes more than 2-3 seconds to show has been forgotten.

I did misunderstand your point about that, I assumed you were supporting the idea you were attacking. I was using "filler" in the sense of episodes that don't advance the overall plot, and pointing out that if you watch Sentai, you should expect these kind of episodes (not that I consider them to be truly "filler", just using the term that was being used). While I prefer the plot-driven nature of Kamen Rider (and would love to see a Sentai with that level of plot), I enjoy the character development of these "filler" episodes.

I was hoping they might go with some angle about Lucky not being selected by the Kyulette turned out to be the lucky result (the ones selected getting captured or something along those lines).

While its good you admit it, that use of the word is wrong as it devalues the episodes that don't advance the main plot when in reality these shows aren't plot based(which, despite /m/ saying otherwise doesn't mean they don't have a plot) when in reality the show is about both kind of episodes (and even the plot based episodes are episodic, all feature a transformation, a finisher and a mech fight with few exceptions).

A better term for these kind of episodes would be standalone which I don't get why people don't use more.
