It's rarer in Showa but it's there. King Joe fucked Seven's shit up until UG killed him. Zetton was killed by SSSG. There was also that whole bit at the end of 80 about how Earth is to be protected by Earthlings.

If you're talking about the lousy subs, those are provided by Tsuburaya. The only shows CR subbed themselves were X and Orb, which I thought were great. On an unrelated note, I'm just about done with Ultraman Gaia (what a great show it's been, too). I have the crabsticks/HKSubs for Cosmos - should I go ahead and watch it? Is Cosmos worth watching, or will it be a let-down after the genuine greatness that was Gaia?

My alternative at this point is to buckle down and watch Tiga, which I've had for years in one form or another but never manage to get more than 5 episodes in (something else always shows up and distracts me).

I also really need to get to snagging the various movies/miniseries that happened after Mebius, with Ultraseven's son or whatever. Still haven't seen those. Anyone know where those can be acquired?

Most of the time the monsters were not outright hostile and aiming to wreck shit. They behave more like lost animal that needs wrangling. Chaos Header was responsible for the more hostile activities and even he was saved at the end. Even the aliens were not all hostile.

I think it's just that Japan isn't interested on tokusatsu anymore. Godzilla was promoted as a Hideaki Anno's movie and it got a crossover promotion with Eva so together with its nationalistic themes it could make a lot of money but it was the exception, not the rule. Yeah, it was actually pretty great but quality rarely has anything to do with economical success.

I'm at a loss to explain this narrative. Only a handful of ultra shows remain unsubbed. Many have had official subs, some have had subs, and a few actually aired on TV. Sentai is undoubtedly the most well known but ultra is much more well known than rider. Rider would be nowhere without fansubs, Toei gives no shits. Tsubaraya loves it's fans. They make us wait but they do deliver, eventually.

My exposure to the Ultraman franchise so far has been a dvd collection of the original series. I'm really enjoying the fuck out of it so far and think that the show takes a real sharp upturn in quality around episode 8.
