Sei wasn't a 'fat otaku' either, and yet the series was made so much better because he had a genuine enthusiasm for model-building and a love of Gundam that served as a really entertaining aspect of his character.

The extent of Sekai's care for the series extends to him singing Anime Ja Nai once, and there's no love in any building he does because everything just gets handed to him.

The story was the Arian thing with the fugitive who stole the macguffin crystal and used it to create a media empire after jumping timelines with the help of a spunky gunota who is then apprehended by the boy prince who followed him with the help of his own spunky gunota who each help eachother to grow and learn through the power of competition and friendship.

Your logic would say that G Gundam is solely about a tournament when that is only the framework for the story.

Why is she so fat?

I think it's the same thing that goes wrong with a lot of Gundam series, the characters. There's nothing I find wrong with the main three, we have a builder, the fighter and now a leader of sorts. What I think went wrong is the OTHER characters. GBF had Mao, Ricardo, Tatsuya, Aila, and a few others that they took time to show you and get you invested in. GBFT didn't do that with really anyone the Try Fighters fought except a bit from the last group, at no point where you at a loss when a different team fought a battle. It lost a lot of it's charm that way. Like Ricardo's little talk with Gundam Fenici, or when Mao lost his fight, them saving Tatsuya and many more moments. Try had some good moments with the main characters but it doesn't stand up against GBF as well because of it. Things like SD gundams didn't help either but wasn't a huge problem and thankfully they got rid of winning gundam for star winning gundam pretty quickly

The worst offenses were the Crossbone and Tryon 3 fights.

The problem was that the way Try Fighters was set up they couldn't have later matches of characters introduced earlier. That messed up with the entire build up. They should have followed the original's format with two separate tournaments, rather than it all being a single one.
