So we're all in agreement that the ICE woman is Tenma's mom, right? The nose knows.

Will it get past the tournament? The past two eps have been filler even though this is only 13 episodes long. The opening makes it seem like the tournament is the main focus too.

Am I the only one who thinks the weird sexual tension between Ochanomizu and Tenma is kind of... Sacrilegious? I feel like they're too "classic", that putting generic modern anime shit upon them is like spitting on Tezuka and the very foundation of anime.

Plus there doesn't seem to be a reasonable way for Tenma to turn from the conceited goofball we see here into the abusive alcoholic we see in 90% of Astro Boy media.

Okay, I was probably projecting with that post. I should clarify.

The name "Atom: The Beginning" led me to expect something a little more true to the source material. Tenma and Ochanomizu aren't supposed to be anywhere close in age, but here they are as peers for the sake of (what I feel is unnecessary) bromance. I can at least appreciate how the "unnamed disaster and reconstruction" is probably just a nod to WWII and Japan's changing mindset in consideration of using technology for the betterment of mankind. I still wish this was set a few decades before the 2000's to coincide with Atom's canon birthday, instead in the vague "near future" setting.
