Literally powered by nostalgia. Shit characters, copies UC story but makes it nonsensical, and battles are boring as hell unless it's a 1v1 duel. It's got alright music though. G Gundam will always be the best AU Gundam ever. UC is best of course.

"normcore" implies a normie would actually watch Wing. Wing is only appealing to young teenage anime fans specifically. When you are 14 years old the idea of a stealth Gundam with bat wings and a beam scythe is super duper appealing. or if you are a fujoshi, it's more about gay sex.

From a writing perspective it's dogshit, which isn't far below most Gundam, but seriously even ignoring the politics there's nobody that you give a shit about. If you're an edgy young teen though you might be way into Zechs because he looks like Sephiroth, wut a badass

From a mechporn perspective it fails utterly; the designs are even more action-figure-esque than Gundam normally is. The Gundams are too fucking strong to be interesting. The action is full of stock footage since most of it consists of them killing countless mooks. There's nothing more than a token effort at implying that these aren't magical super robots and need any kind of maintenance in doing their absurd duty, which is to BEAT THE EARTH with 5 MS. A plot so childishly oversimplified, it really stands as a symbol for the childish simplicity of the rest of the series, a series where the final battle is between human and a bunch of AI drones (SNOREEEE)

This was never their mission. The Gundams were built to mop up after colony drops wiped out the Alliance's HQ and are decorated ridiculously for the sole purpose of being a terror weapon.

Even after the pilots abandon the original plan, their new one was not facing the whole Earth, it was guerilla tactics hitting key points by surprise and then high-tailing out of there.

Heero had already been established to have superhuman durability, the entire second episode was pretty much dedicated to showing that while he was in the medical examinations. Even with that, he still was completely fucked up by the explosion, was in a coma for a month, and couldn't pilot a MS for several episodes after. He wasn't even in the blast, it was behind him and threw him off the Gundam, which is about a two story fall.

One of the only Gundam series I had to struggle to watch. The storytelling is very aimless for the first half, and it's difficulty to understand what the intended climax was. Then it all resets half way in when the boys lose their Gundams, and becomes even more of a slog. I've heard this had to do with staff changes, but it doesn't really excuse the show.

The only reason it was EVER a thing in the states is it's the one that was picked to air on Toonami. If they'd picked G, or X, then those would enjoy the place Wing now holds in the minds of some, as their first Gundam.

It's a tired argument that's often brought up about Gundam. "They're just super robots, they never break down or show wear or have to struggle".

Yet when we get shows that spend a lot of time with the robots in the hangar getting worked on (like IBO), the same people bitch about how boring it is.

Clearly we need an anime that spends half of every episode on in-depth maintenance, showing all the parts and how to rotate the spanner to pull them loose. And then the other half having the robot go out and immediately break down again to show how it struggles to do the job it was built for.

It's extremely difficult to feel connected with any characters in this show.
I know Gundam isn't amazing with characters most of the time, but there's usually some emotional investment that can be had between the viewer and some of the main cast.
Out of the Gundam boys, Heero and Trowa are rock slabs when it comes to personality, relying entirely in shallow backstory to be perceived as any kind of characters. Wufei is an angry edgelord who is written like a one off antagonist. Quatre and Duo at least seem like normal humans on the surface, but they get so little focus and involvement in the main story. The biggest thing Quatre gets to do is go absolutely insane and blow up a colony out of nowhere. And it feels completely separate from everything else about his character.
Zechs seems compelling at first, but then white fang happens and you learn he was the least emotionally stable of the entire cast.
I guess Trieze is pretty entertaining for a villain, but he's nothing to get attached to.
So you are effectively left with Relena. An aristocratic princess turned political superpower. Not a particularly interesting character, but you are at least given her constant perspective and introduced to the world through her eyes.

It aired on Toonami, yes. Years later, and only after airing 08th MS, 0080, and 0079. And was accompanied by a flood of merchandise of one-episode suits that only warmed store shelves, because by then (especially after airing 0079 only to pull it after 9/11) interest was waning.

Basically, they put G on in order to try to recapture Wing audience. After they lost it by trying to push Universal Century right after.

Yes the Gundams get repaired a lot but their invincibility is still more apparent than UC Gundams. Almost every battle in Wing is just one Gundam taking out 30 Leos. It's boring as hell. The only times I ever felt excitement from the battles were 1v1 duels which usually went no where. Or when the dolls started turning the tides only to be reduced to cannon fodder like human pilots.

This is my favorite scene in Wing

As a show, Wing is bad - as much as I want to enjoy it. EW as a movie is also not amazing, but the animation was gorgeous.

Wing got fucked up when the main director got switched early on. The whole series is a disjointed mess.

Despite this, I still don't mind it because it made-up for its flaws with Treize. That dude and his philosophy was fascinating as fuck. Not to mention the Gundam pilots were merely spectators in the grand events that unfolded and not the prime movers like SEED/Destiny does. They even got conned into assassinating the peaceful faction of the Earth Alliance.

Oh and the Tallgeese is the most aesthetically-pleasing mobile suit I've ever seen. It's a Prototype Leo with oversized verniers, but damn it's sexy as fuck.

The problem with most AU Gundam is that A LOT of the Gundam staples are heavily rooted in UC - for example, why Mobile Suits are needed at all; Minovsky physics; how beam weapons work; the arrangement of space colonies; etc.

Gundam Wing is fine to watch but a lot of stuff just doesn't make sense because it's not set in continuity with UC yet it assumes the viewer knows the basics of the UC world also applies to the After Colony world. Which, in itself, doesn't make sense. They've gotten better at addressing this issue but ultimately it's why UC is generally the strongest showing.
