Hey /ssg/, I'm going to be trying to get my girlfriend into toku in a bit here. Well, maybe not so much that as she's taken an interest in shows I like to watch, I talked about toku, and she sounded interested. I've seen my fair share of Riders and Sentai, and i'm wondering what you all think would be the most accessible to someone?

Particularly, a series that starts out strong from the start and doesn't let up until one is more or less hooked. I'm kinda honestly thinking Carranger, Timeranger or going with something quite modern like Amazons. I've only seen the first few episodes of Amazons as well so that'd be new for the two of us, did like what I saw though.

Only the first two episodes. Plot wise is as simplistic as it gets and havent really bothered to explain where the new mechs come from(though given the spirit base is inside the new bragihas they might be upgrades of the old ones but that's speculation). The action is decent but the episodes are way too short. I like how they try to use the little time they have for characterization, even if the characters aren nothing to write home about they make sure they at least have a quirk to get you to know them. Kinda like kyoryuger did but they had time there. Red doesnt take too much of the spotlight...because there isnt much spotlight to take in the first place. But he is the second coming of daigo so...

Having a proper run time would do wonders for it. As it is now, i'm not sure.

Go Busters was the last serious season and it had a worrying robot gorilla, sassy robot rabbit, and a bike man as three goofy main characters, not to mention a chicken phobia as a plot point.

ToQger is also a goofy season about a team that literally uses childhood joy and whimsy as their weapon but they still managed to make it feel like they were serious about fighting the shadow line. Kyuranger for the most part seems LESS serious about their fight and LESS of a cohesive squadron than the damn ToQgers.

Like fine if they want Kyuranger to be a goofy show, but jark matter has been built up as a legit threat that has murdered millions. It doesn't mesh to me that fighting them is treated like a vacation most of the time and most of the team members just do whatever they feel like and the commander just does shit at random.

And really, even if it's a comedy season, don't you need at least ONE character to be a straight man or woman? Not that Raptor can't be funny. Her bouts of imagination were funnier than any of Spada's food puns or anything Hammy has done. Look, even if she's team mom, which episode 4 was about her surpassing, she could still be Kengo to the team's Fourze and work as a character. The writers here are at fault for bringing up things like Raptor's ambition or Champs wrestling career and desire to avenge his father and then pretend those never happened.

The problems with Kyuranger are simply that it's got a cast too big to develop in a satisfactory manner and that it's tone is too inconsistent.

The main 9 are all 1 Note Gimmick characters, so if you don't like the gimmick the characters offer you nothing. The human characters besides Naga are charisma black holes, they're your typical "I'm just a pretty Young Adult Jap trying to get my career started so I won't do anything TOO crazy or try TOO hard so I don't get typecast after this is done" and the reason Naga sticks out as a favorite is because his GIMMICK is over or underacting, so he literally can't give a no effort performance The latest attempt at making another hit of VA characters like the Imagin is a bust because they aren't being given any proper screentime, when the Imagin literally had a minimal 2 episodes of focus before integrating into the cast. We're going to reach a point where there are 12 members in the main cast and by then most of these characters will be at about the same position they were at the start. '

Alright /ssg/ I've been a long time Power Rangers fan and decided to get into SS, where the fuck do I start, is there a recommended list from /m or something I can use as reference?

Shinkenger is probably the best to start with for a series from the last 10 years, with solid storytelling, character building and action.

If you want one from the last 5 years, Kyoryuger would be a fine choice, with ToQger following after.

Avoid Ninninger at all costs.

If you want something before Power Rangers existed, Jetman and Liveman are good options. Changeman would be, but I don't know how are the subtitles for that one.
From the first Saban era of PR, Megaranger is pretty much the best one you can find. Again, it would be Timeranger if not because the lack of good subs.
From the Disney era of PR, Dekaranger is pretty good, right above Abaranger, in my opinion. Then comes Gekiranger, Boukenger and Magiranger in no particular order.
For the Second neo-Saban era, and including the season that were skipped or not done yet, Shinkenger is pretty much the perfect option for someone that is starting Sentai, for the reasons >>15470277 pointed out. Then Kyoryuger and ToqGer are next. Zyuohger is decent. Gokaiger can be fun even if you never watched anything, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first series, maybe see if you like the feel of it first using another one as reference.

It isn't atrociously horrible or anything, and it has its good points, but a lot of people feel like it doesn't stand out much compared to other seasons.

I didn't mind watching it weekly as it aired, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone now unless they're a completionist.

Zyuranger, which was adapted into MMPR, was my jumping on point and I loved it so much. Most series seem to be stand-alone with the exception of the occasional crossover episode/special/movie. I'd recommend Gokaiger (features cameos from a ton of previous series because it's an anniversary series wherein the Rangers use the powers of past teams) and Kyoryuger for a fun time as far as modern series go.

Yoko's thighs and Enter having his fun moments (he actually ends up being the best thing about the show by the end, not immediately so though) is what kept me going until J & Jin showed up admittedly. Action was good but not amazing like some people here say, again all the best sequences happen further into the series. It legitimately does have a pretty slow start I feel.

Ninninger used to be at the top of my shit list but here's a few redeeming factors for it:

>Red is a buffoon AND the others aren't afraid to call him out on it
>Yakumo, Kasumi, and Kinji are pretty good characters
>they could have kept Dadninger as purely comic relief but they made him actually likeable

The show still has a rather dumb plot and the villains are dull as dishwater, but as an episodic show it's not too bad.

I didn't find Kou to be annoying at all. He was introduced as a bratty kid but that was dropped soon after. The only other annoying part was I guess when Byakko had to convince him to fight.

SS noob here. So I'm more than halfway through watching Zyuranger and it's obvious that Daizyujin is like an actual sentient being that does his own shit and is more and less a benevolent deity unless you piss it off.

Has this concept of the SS mech being a sentient being with a voice a first for the series? Do they ever do it again?

I think Zyuranger's the first. It happens again later, but it's a rarity. The Abaranger and Go-Onger robots are the only other ones I know of that are both sentient and fully voiced. Several others, like the ones from Kyoryuger, Zyuohger, etc., are self-aware but aren't voiced.

It seems popular to hate on Takaharu but catchphrase aside, his self-admitted dimwittedness was fun at times and he does take more of a backseat for the second half of the show.

I loved the episode about Dadninger's backstory, made me feel for the poor guy. It's nice that he gets a bit of action later on.
