Just finished watching this show tonight. The first half was kind of rough, but it really came into its own in the second half. It has the best action scenes in any of the Gundam shows I've seen.

The tone is all over the place, but that's nothing new with Tomino.

I don't like it when people use completely unrelated to the plot mind alteration as a white card excuse to explain away behavior they find unacceptable instead of trying to actually understand the character because that would demand from them to put their two brain cells together.
Four, Rosammy, Puru weren't crazy because they had their mind altered. They were crazy because they were used as experimental subjects.
Iron Mask was crazy long before he became Cyber Newtype.
Gyunei, Quess weren't crazy at all.

For all those characters people will just say "Uh, I dunno. I guess they just did something to their minds."
If Katejina was indeed a Cyber Newtype that could have had an influence on her emotional stability depending on many factors, but her behavior didn't change because she had her personality artificially altered, which is what a lot of people around here seem to be trying to imply.

I don't know what to tell you: you can not like it, fine, but that's what the creator says happens, and it certainly makes things make a bit more sense. She was an evil bitch before, but there is a point where she becomes, as you said, noticeably unstable on a level that she wasn't before, and it comes along with her suddenly having the piloting abilities to use a prototype suit that can fight on par with the V2.

Okay, looked it up and apparently it wasn't Tormino but the novelization that says she was cybernewtyped. Since I don't think Tormino wrote the novelized version it's possible that it wasn't what she intentended, although I still maintain it makes a lot of sense and it's never explicitly said that she didn't become a cybernewtype-- she does unquestionably become a newtype of some kind, because she gets newtype powers.

I'm not saying this isn't true or that it doesn't bother me but at the same time I understand her concept as a character and find it interesting so even if I don't think it's perfectly executed it I can't accept that people would dismiss it just because it doesn't make sense to them.
It's just like Tomino to neglect adding integral plot points because he expects the audience to read his mind and to leave me stuck trying to explain to unbelievers his irrational characters with using arguments like "The author totally wanted you to know this but he...forgot to mention it."

It's a great fault because there is an unnatural unaccounted for jump in her development.
People need reasons for what they do.
Tomino doesn't always state those reasons explicitly and he often has his characters do random things for seemingly inexplicable reasons though unlike with Katejina I am usually able to deduce those reasons with at least some level of certainty from the context. I complained about it earlier but in fact that is what makes his writing good. Real people are not easy to understand. Real people don't have sympathy invoking sad flashbacks and they don't turn to the camera to tell you how they feel on the background of sad violin music so you can sympathize with them. If that is what you mean by "you can never pin her down" then I agree.
But is you mean that she is just bad and not "meant" to be understood and thus you are excused from trying to understand her then I can't agree with you on any of those points.
