They should have died there. Most of the deaths in IBO are garbage and way too easily telegraphed (Biscuit, Naze and Amida, Guts's brother, that kid in the Rodi killed by McGillis), but that moment was legitimately surprising and would have been good. Even worse is the overplayed reactions to character deaths (*cough* Biscuit *cough*).

The difference is that killing of several of the main cast, moreover characters that were actually somewhat liked, would've had an actual impact on the audience. Killing Gaelio was hit or miss.
