It didn't actually under perform by much initially. It was still getting lower ratings than previous shows if I recall, but only by half a percent or something. It wasn't until it got a new time slot that it really fell off. And it more likely got that because of poor gunpla sales or something than because the ratings were off in it's initial slot.
