It's not campy or funny like a bad joke. Visually it was one of the first shows to use digital coloring and art for a lot of scenes, so it doesn't hold up well (the remaster is atrocious at times, and at worst is blurry and consists of a lot of zoomed in, cropped scenes). We'd actually recommend the original DVD rips or the compilation movies instead of the remastered series, unless you can't find a torrent of them. You aren't missing much important plot wise if you go with the shorter movies, and the remasters only have a few new scenes here and there. If visual quality doesn't matter, then it's fine to go with the remasters.

Writing ranges from okay to "why?" since sometimes it's a bit dumb. The head writer had a reputation for being a bitch who always got her way because she was married to the director. Story-wise, Seed is a partial rehash of the original series until about the halfway point where it becomes its own thing. Destiny has a few elements of Zeta Gundam tossed in here and there.

What I enjoyed from it were some of the mecha designs. The GM-lookalikes, in particular.

No, it doesn't, and no it isn't. The actual story is a character piece about the protagonist and his changing mental state. Everything else is just window dressing in aid of that. Only side stories feature more focus on the war itself, and even those are more about people.
