I love it, my absolute favorite mecha series and the reason I got deep into the genre/started coming here. One of my all time favourite anime series.

OVAs are great but they're mainly for fans.

Manga is good, particularly the original and Go. Didn't feel too much invested in G and Shin. Arc ended too abruptly.

Anon . . . it ended abruptly because the magazine went under then the author died.

I know.

However, I think I would have liked Ken Ishikawa's Majuu Sensen more if it had an ending.

His other manga like Kyomu Senki and Makai Tensho are good too but the samurai aspect of those series aren't necessarily my cup of tea.

It's ultimately my most favorite mecha series that it's hard for me to like other mecha series besides Getter though I do like a lot of robot series. Just not above Getter in terms of being my favorite.

It's been like 3 years and it's still my number 1.

I love Getter for a multitude of reasons. It was recommended to me by a friend when I asked him what mecha series would get me into the genre. The designs are very aesthetically pleasing to me and the gimmick is just extremely cool to me since I've always loved form changes that being diverse skill sets. That was how it caught my eye and piqued my interest so I went into the series with Armageddon.

Armageddon showed to me several things: this series has amazing action, the characters are all likable and stand out (aside from maybe Gai who has never particularly impressed me although I do like him), character drama is at the forefront but they all are logical enough to put personal shit aside to get the job done rather than let their crap get in the way of saving the world, Getter has an emphasis on cosmic horror, and Getter focuses on evolution both in the biological sense and societal sense.

Going into the rest of the series I saw a constant return to a specific trend, and that's how the series asks a lot of philosophical questions. Getter itself is a moral grey area, and it's constantly questioned do humans have the right to do what they do. Every version of Getter always starts fun and steadily escalates to a more serious point where they gain the power to combat their enemy but begin asking if what they are doing is right. Ultimately they fight to save earth and humanity, but they have shown even self preservation can leave a sour taste in your mouth when it comes with exterminating an entire race. Arc especially touched on interesting ideas of "have we gone too far?"

I think Getter is just fun on so many levels whether it be more base love for action and cool robots beating the shit out of robots/monsters, or a deeper level in asking some very interesting questions about the ethics of history/progress itself and that the universe/time is the cruelest of all.
>>
>>15444476
I love it to death. The Shin and New variations are easily my favorite mecha as well.
>>
>>15444476
Fun on many levels, but a pity Ishikawa is dead.

We will never know what he planned for the finale of Arc.
>>
General idea behind it (all that Getter Ray stuff) is amazing.
Unfortunately none of source material was able to really draw out true Getter's potential.

OG Manga is a fun ride (though I prefer Mazinger Z, honestly), G was pretty unremarkable, Go really became great only in final arc (which was way too short), can't remember a single thing about Shin and Arc ended way before it had its chance to really shine.

Toei TV was pretty enjoyable (G arguably even more so), but is far from its source material.

OVAs were outstanding and came closer than anything to fully utilizing ideas behind manga, but didn't really get there, unfortunately.

Getter Emperor still awaits its rightful adaptation which will bring Getter's glory to the world.

>Getter Emperor still awaits its rightful adaptation which will bring Getter's glory to the world.
It's had a slow start but I have high hopes for Devolution. The entire premise revolves around emperor and open knowledge of the Getter mythos. I think it has the potential to becoming the best possible manga sequel to the original Ishikawa stuff.
>>
>>15447606
Shin is just a filled in prequel to (somewhat) explain what the fuck happened in the end of Go
It's still pretty good for a filled in prequel
>>
>>15447606
G had a pretty cool ending with Uzahra teaming up with the Getter G and that Shine Spark
>>
>>15447606
>Go really became great only in final arc
Fuck no. Rando's war was the best.
>>
>>15447606
>preferring the total mess of the Mazinger Z manga to the exceptional OG Getter manga
>glossing over Shin which is one of the best mecha manga ever
Ya tried
>>
>>15447950
OG Getter was just as messy. Though that applies mostly to G.
TV Toei actually took its time to introduce Benkei (who I think never got anything to do in manga until Shin). TV Toei gets a lot of shit in general, but both Getter and Mazinger anime series were more coherent than their manga counterparts. Also, TV Musashi's dead is surprisingly dark compared even to manga.

Also, I'm sorry if I gave an impression that I dislike Shin. I'm not. It works as explanation for Go's ending, but I can't remember anything particularly memorable about it, aside from Shin Dragon. At least not as memorable as any other Getter manga.

>>15447678
Dunno. I didn't find pre-Ryoma Go particularity interesting at all. Though maybe it's because I didn't particularly cared for the new characters. They were fine (Kei was great, but didn't have much screentime), but not as good as OG team or even Arc crew.
>>
>>15448708
>but both Getter and Mazinger anime series were more coherent than their manga counterparts
I completely agree on Mazinger, but am curious as to why you think the same for Getter?
>>
>>15448720
Yeah, that's a really strange statement given that Toei Getter is MotW adventures and the manga is just a straight shot narrative to a well defined ending.
>>
>>15448720
>>15448731
Short narrative is the problem here.
Most of characters don't get the amount of character development they need (for example, it always bothered me why Hayato went from straight sociopath to just anti-hero in 2-3 chapters). Musashi deserved more focus, too.

Toei TV at least had quite a few character-focused episodes. Even the side characters got some.
When Musashi died in TV, it really felt that one of the team is gone (especially, since it happened in the moment, when Getter team pretty much lost )
I don't know, for me OG Getter manga, while superior in many aspects, never invoked the same sense of comradery TV did.
Maybe, it just wasn't supposed to.

>this guy didn't even read the manga

Hayato ripped a guys face off with his bare hands in his introduction. He went from being a sociopath in charge of a group of 'revolutionaries' who had no problem violently punishing his subordinates to someone meekly following Saotome's orders in a couple chapters.

Gee it's almost like in that first introduction chapter they directly show that Hayato is a terrorist because he sees it as a challenge and thinks its some big important thing, then proceeds to witness that there's a battle for earth that could end in humanity being wiped out and that shifted his paradigm. It's not like we saw him literally piss his pants in fear, or scream like a little kid when he was put in the Getter, or be enamored with the rush and power that comes with piloting a Getter. It's not like Hayato still exhibited sociopathic tendencies throughout the rest of the manga or that the first story in G focused on Hayato explaining to his cousin why he stopped caring about overthrowing the government

Oh wait, all that DID happen.

No anon, you're the illiterate.

Hayato was just the same as always. He's cold blooded and willing to make sacrifices for what he sees as the greater goal. Before Getter, he wanted to reform the Japanese government. Those two snitches were going to get his entire crew put to death by leaking his assassination plans. Saotome showed him something far more important that reforming the government. Even while he was piloting Getter, he was more than willing to sacrifice innocent human life to get the job done. Get good.
>>
>>15450807
Not to prove you wrong or anything, but doesn't Hayato save one of those suicide bomber kids? Or am I just remembering it wrong and it was actually Ryoma
>>
>>15450844
Pretty sure that was Ryoma. Remember that Hayato is so cold blooded he used his fiance and family to defuse bombs in Go. And he considered the "proper" way to arm wrestle was with a knife on both sides so the loser lost an arm. He is a good person but he's very much a big picture person to the point he disregards morality, if he was put in a position where pushing one button kills one person and the other kills 10 he would push the 1 person button without hesitation.

People who claim Hayato ever stops being a sociopath are stupid.
>>
>>15450844
Hayato saves one of them. It's not like he was ever devoid of all emotion, but he was always willing to do evil things in order to do what he thought was ultimately right. It was like that from his first appearance all the way until his last.
>>
>>15450874
>And he considered the "proper" way to arm wrestle was with a knife on both sides so the loser lost an arm
He was just intimidating them because they were goofing off on the job. It was a joke.
