The problem with that is it doesn't look disconcerting in an uncomfortable manner, it looks disconcerting in an ugly manner and almost makes the unit look kind of geeky frankly, since it looks a bit like it has spectacles on already.

In lineart, yeah, but it works much better in animation or model kit form. I will grant that Gaiking, the design F91 is probably trying to reference did it better however. The contrast is much more significant and there's no mistake that it's definitely a monster under the mask.

It does, but it's true face is only visible for half a second in one scene in the animation and even then it's at that side on angle you're using so it's fairly ambiguous. I think part of the problem looking at it some more is also that the way the face opens makes the features look very squashed, with the features being gated on either side by single, continuous panels.

This. I fully agree with this. This is definitely a flaw of this design. It's almost like Okawara was struggling with balancing the real robot aesthetics and a properly monstrous but super robot-ish look and ultimately decided to settle on a lazy halfway point between the two.

The design might have worked better if F91 was produced as an OVA because then they would have been able to show the face bit by bit and build up a sense of paranoia and anxiety about its "true nature".
