Is RE:0096 the preferred method of watching Unicorn? About to start Unicorn for the first time, and I'm curious is this is like Zeta or something, where you avoid the re-release at all costs.

No. There's no major difference.
Just stick with the 6 episode movies to keep things going at a nice flow.

And by 6 I mean 7.
Sorry, it's been a while.

Reading around, that's what I've gathered. It seems like people think the series messed up the pacing of the OVA's by cramming in a lot of recap filler.
Thanks.

The recap material helps more if you weren't in a position to marathon things, you'd be surprised how easily people get lost with Unicorn back when the OVA was slowly rolling out and those episode recaps do quite a job bringing the viewer to speed with where the plot's at.
Long story short, UC-RE96 is the idiotproofed version, but otherwise doesn't expand on UC-OVA.

Why would you even begin to suppose that RE:0096 would be the preferred version?
And fun fact: the OVA is about 50 minutes shorter, thanks to the recaps added in RE:0096.

This really, the OVAs don't have 10 minute long recaps at the start of each episode. Though RE:0096 touches up some scenes its not something that really affects the quality.
