Big Machine never got an anime, but there was a record released with a theme song called 大マシンの歌

All in all, Big Machine might possibly be the most cryptic mecha series to have radically shaped the genre. The mangaka, Izumi Yukio, debuted in 1956.He was born in 1938 and is still alive as far as his wiki entry is concerned.

Simply put: it had no anime. There are endless amounts of once popular manga and mangaka that fall into obscurity simply because they never had anime series.

Never said that but OK. I said

>I think Giant Robo had better art and there's far less panels of the characters making the exact same running pose. Could be because some other mangaka who was relatively popular did a bunch of art for it.

I don't know why you think I have something against Yokoyama when a ton of the images I've been posting are from him.

Giant Robo has 39 chapters (at least in the version we have) , Satoru did 12 of them. That's a good portion of the manga, dude. I think he deserves some credit.

>The amount of compensation for giving up your rights was blank in the contract, but Niki Smith says the rate was $750 — or $20 a page.

If it takes you a day to do a page, you are NOT cut out to make comics. Period. It should not take you over a month to do a single 36 page chapter.

No offense, but what are you talking about? I don't know how you came up with Tokyopop and Niki Smith and pay rates and all, based on what's been discussed in this thread.

On the other hand, you said:
>If it takes you a day to do a page, you are NOT cut out to make comics. Period. It should not take you over a month to do a single 36 page chapter.

First of all, in the USA most comics are 22 pages per issue (well, 19-20 now). VERY few comics artists can draw more than one issue a month. It's gruelling work! And even if you can do two pages a day (a miraculous rate of output) that means you can do 2-1/2 issues per month... If you get paid $20 per page, that's 50 pages per month, or $1000 per month. That's an absolutely miserable rate of pay. Lower than minimum wage.

Anyone who wants to pays a comic artist less than $100 per page is a fucking bastard.

(And yes, I know that manga artists regularly do 20 pages per week, but they usually have three assistants, NO lives, don't get enough sleep, are in poor health, and live in a country where there's a word for "death from overwork.")

>First of all, in the USA most comics are 22 pages per issue (well, 19-20 now). VERY few comics artists can draw more than one issue a month.
In Japan, many series are weekly at about 20 pages. Your argument is fucked.
>Anyone who wants to pays a comic artist less than $100 per page is a fucking bastard.
Holy shit, you're ridiculous. Have you ever even worked in the comic industry? That was rhetorical btw.

>(And yes, I know that manga artists regularly do 20 pages per week, but they usually have three assistants, NO lives, don't get enough sleep, are in poor health, and live in a country where there's a word for "death from overwork.")
So you just want to deny the entire downfall of your shitty argument by dismissing a huge industry that does exactly what you argue can't be done? Fuck, you're an idiot.

I address that later, as we both know, so what you said there is nothing but wasted bandwidth.

>Holy shit, you're ridiculous. Have you ever even worked in the comic industry? That was rhetorical btw.

Actually I have, yes. That's why I said anyone who does that is "a fucking bastard" rather than "unheard of." And if you think Marvel or DC pay less than $100 per page, you're wrong.

>So you just want to deny the entire downfall of your shitty argument by dismissing a huge industry that does exactly what you argue can't be done? Fuck, you're an idiot.

I didn't dismiss the manga industry. I acknowledged it. And I didn't say it can't be done. If you're cool with churning out 80 pages a month by working all the time, having no life, not getting enough sleep, scheduling your meals and naps and bathroom breaks, all with the help of three other people who are in the same boat, and getting paid less than minimum wage, well then, knock yourself out. Just remember the word "karōshi."

And while we're at it, you shouldn't call people ridiculous and an idiot when you can't even keep track of which thread you're posting in. (That's assuming you're the same person who posted >>15451748. If you're not, disregard.)

>If you're cool with churning out 80 pages a month by working all the time, having no life, not getting enough sleep, scheduling your meals and naps and bathroom breaks
This is pure bullshit. Stop trying to act like you know what it's like behind the scenes. Do they have assistants? Yes. Is everyone on the verge of dying and in the hospital? Fuck no. That's not realistic and the industry would have collapsed long ago if everyone was like that. Stop trying to discredit an entire industry that proves your bullshit wrong.

>Actually I have, yes.
Post your fucking comics.

>And if you think Marvel or DC pay less than $100 per page, you're wrong.
You think every company is Marvel or DC and is publishing titles like Superman or Spider-Man? Get out of here with that ignorance.

Shit man, Togashi himself said he had to live on 4 hours of sleep per day, and around 6 hours of free time *per week*, and that was after he became a living legend as an artist. Every other mangaka is in the same boat if their work has a weekly release.

Unless you're a superhuman immortal vampire like Araki, working on weekly manga will consume the entirety of your life and slowly turn you into a wreck of a human being. Everyone knows this, nobody pretends this is not the case - not the authors themselves, not even the Jump execs.

I wonder if this thread can tell me if Tetsujin #28 was the first Japanese giant robot, or if there were golem-like robots, such as The Moon and Midori no Maoh and all those, which came before #28?
>>
>>15452015
Doesn't Togashi refuse to use assistants?

Because most successful manga artists will have assistants to avoid this situation. It's a lot easier to avoid becoming overworked to that point when you have 2-5 people working on your manga.

I have to say though, Yokoyama's designs from the same era are way better and have actually aged well. Kinda like Mazinger and how they're timeless designs, I guess. Tezuka's feel very outdated to me. That said, Astro Boy is pretty fun to read. I got the omnibus release of volume 1 a while ago and it's huge and very hard to hold.

Not related but I wish manga publishers for old manga would just use the original cover art instead of pasting panels from the manga on the cover. Pic is one of the better looking ones.

One thing I really like about early manga is how they're mostly about pure FUN and prioritize that over everything else. Things like Giant Robo don't make for the most memorable stories but they sure as fun as fuck to read and always fun to go back over. Every once in a while I'll re-read Tezuka's Lost World or Metropolis or some chapter of Astro Boy.

DMP is consistently kickstarting and publishing Tezuka's works, I'd like to see someone do that with other important figures of /m/ manga like Ishinomori, Nagai, Satoru, Leiji, Yokoyama, and even the guy who wrote big machine.

I've seen that a few manga publishers have taken risks publishing obscure as hell gekiga manga like Drawn and Quarterly or the failed 10 Cent Manga imprint.

LOL. I'm sometimes active over on the TFW2005.com boards, talkin' Transformahs, and some guy there is arguing that Japan likes piloted robots much more than sentient/autonomous robots. (Maybe, maybe not. I don't think so, but it's a worthwile discussion.)

The thing is, he's so lopsided in his perceptions. He actually said:

>The biggest autonomous robot in Japan is of course Mighty Atom/Astro Boy. But once you get past that, there is almost nothing until you get to Transformers, and very little after Transformers. Just a handful of examples in the 50 years Japanese robot comics and cartoons have been around. 99.999999% of all robot fiction in Japan is piloted, non-sentient mecha.

Oy vey.
>>
>>15463269
>Japan likes piloted robots much more than sentient/autonomous robots.

They kinda do, though? Most modern mecha shows involve piloted robots and have since the 70's. And then there's remote controlled robots like Tetsujin or like Giant Robo. The sentient robots were more of a thing of the 50's and 60's and became outdated.
>>
>>15463302

Tetsujin was at least capable of autonomous action. He followed instructions, rather than being fully remote-operated. And he'd sometimes go out of control, berserk.

And as for modern autonomous robots, there's King Joe, Mecha Godzilla, Jet Jaguar, Mechanikong, Ambassador Magma, Chamber, DaiZyuJin, * Man, Doraemon, Arale, Pegas, Big O and friends, Machine Robo, five of the six robots of Godmars, the list goes on and on and on.

Loosely based on a manga from the 70's and an anime of the 80's.

Go look at any currently airing mecha anime and more than likely they're piloted. It's been that way since Mazinger.

You're in a thread about obscure /m/ shows and manga. If he's talking about anything else it's off topic.

Most /m/ things involving robots involve giant piloted robots and have been that way since the 70's.
>>
>>15464097
Oh don't try to pull the off topic card on me just to try and win some stupid argument. Fact is, Japan has so many sentient robots in both /m/ and non /m/ focused series that it clearly outnumbers giant robots. If the other poster was referring only to giant robot shows, then yes there are more piloted robots as the main robot but even then many of these shows also feature sentient robot characters in secondary roles.

You came into a thread about obscure /m/ shows, I answered you. You have no one to blame but yourself. And I'll restate it again: Most /m/ shows involve piloted robots. This is a board for mecha. Your original examples were /m/ shows/movies involving giant robots and funny enough those were all from decades ago. It seems to me you got buttblasted by someone on another board, on a completely different website, and had to take it out on this board in a thread about obscure series. Literally what.

Man, stop being a douchbag. You know that poster talking about his off topic argument with someone on a forum wasn't exclusively talking about giant robot anime. You're a fucking pathetic twit who can't handle being told you're wrong by anyone.

You don't have to pretend to be someone else. Most /m/ things do involve piloted robots. Sorry if you think I'm a douche for being correct. And even if he's not talking about giant robot anime the statement is still true. You're free to be a pathetic twit and attempt to derail other threads, just don't do it in mine.

Anyway, here's another mecha manga re-released under the Apple Box label. ロボット大帝

What? Are you trying to imply I'm the poster who originally asked the question?
>Most /m/ things do involve piloted robots
That was never his question. And if you want to say /m/, then toku does have tones of sentient robots.
>And even if he's not talking about giant robot anime the statement is still true
Nope.
>just don't do it in mine
The fuck are you going to do it about it, nerd? Delet the thread? Oooohhh. You're an idiot. I had been posting tons of translated info ITT but go ahead and uselessly spam covers that anyone could google and enjoy your zero discussion.

We have countless shows involving piloted robots in Japan airing each season, they have a giant fucking Gundam statue for fuck sake. If you make a statement like "sentient robots are more popular" you better provide some proof and not to mention his original post indicates he's talking about shows where the robot is a center of the show like Ambassador Magma and Doraemon.

Also, for some reason despite the entire thread being an image dump you seem confused about it being an image dump and anything but that. Unlike you'd like some commentary on obvious Astro Boy ripoff #9999 and you won't find info on a lot of these to begin with.

Also, good luck finding them all on google with vague searches like "showa robo/mecha"

Apparently, the first piloted giant robot appeared in a French animated film which was created in... 1948!

Relatively. Most of the people on /m/ who have seen it liked it, as far as I know.

Nina was voiced by Yuko Mizutani, may she rest in peace.

Funimation did the subs before it got a physical release, yeah. Otherwise it wouldn't have had subs at all.
