Beams can be ok, but if they're used too much they reach a saturation point where they become boring.

SEED is an example of beams losing their coolness due to oversaturation.

The use of the beam magnum in the early episodes of Unicorn is an example of good beam usage. Used sparingly enough, and when it is shown, it has very clear impact (melting the shit out of that grunt mech just from proximity), and the viewer is immediately aware that this weapon is a tier above the regular ones.

Beam weapons weren't a thing in early UC so they needed physical weapons. They were eventually phased out for beams but ironically I-Fields made physical weapons good again.

G was crazy and didn't follow any logic.

Only the Gundams had physical weapons in Wing. They were made of Gundanium so they were incredibly strong.

Seed was like UC. Beams were rare early on. Freedom having rail guns doesn't really make sense though.

00 is similar to Wing and UC. Some of the power blocks didn't have beam technology while the Gundams physical weapons have special properties.
