Okay, the pacing in the very early parts is way too rushed but it slows down near the mid point. During htis time the main portag is almost entirely unlikable, but he gets much better in the later half. Animation is what it is for its time. The overall plot is actually really good though, and it feels like it's telling in actual Space Epic with a final battle so good, its pretty damn iconic. Overall, not the best that Gundam has produced, but far from the worst. Definitely worth a watch. Do enjoy. And if anything confuses, someone probably made a thread about it already.

That is so wrong. I actually watched the movies first, then when the blue rays came out watched the series. The series is way better than movies. So many good little stories get cut for the movies, like the one when the Zeon Commandos attack the Gundam on hoverbikes and plant bombs on the Gundam.

First ten episodes are kind of formulaic and repetitive, then it gets better after that, and once Char makes his reappearance things kick into overdrive and the anime becomes one of the best ever.

I watched 0079 and thought it was okay and i'm trying to get through zeta. It's alright so far but it's honestly boring the hell out of me.

Is there a place further down production order where I can go pick up on a different series or is zeta absolutely necessary for understanding everything else?

The main UC story continuity is 0079 to Zeta to ZZ to Char's Counterattack. Zeta sets up some of the same continuing themes and elements that ZZ and Char's Counterattack reference and wrap up. Everything else is a standalone story that can be watched at any time, although a few cases warrant a bit of explanation.

0083 is a prequel companion story to Zeta that explores events leading up to Zeta and how the setting of Zeta came to be. It sort of assumes you've seen Zeta, but isn't required as it's a separate story with its own plot and different cast of characters.

Unicorn is a sequel to the main continuity that takes place 3 years after Char's Counterattack. While it carries on similar themes of the main UC continuity, it doesn't follow the exact same cast of characters and it also has a separate plot. It's best to watch it after having seen 0079 to Char's Counterattack.

If you're finding Zeta to be boring, try some of the other stories like Gundam 0080, 0083, or 08th MS Team. These three are shorter OVAs that try something different, they follow somewhat older protagonists who are enlisted military pilots in units tasked with certain assignments.

Or you might want to try some of the alternate universe stories, but I sort of get the feeling that you don't want to take a break from a 50 episode TV series to start watching another 50 episode TV series. Still, might not be a bad idea.

it didn't quite give me the melancholy feel of finishing 0080 (probably because I know the story isn't quite over for most of these characters) but it was really neat and enjoyable

I think I am biased against super robo, I tried watching this a while ago but couldn't see why people love it aside from nostalgia, so I attributed it to being too old. I've been watching VOTOMS recently and absolutely loving it, so maybe I'll give it another chance.
